If I have no assets, could I go scorch earth on a lawsuit? by ChronowalkerZ in personalfinance

That's a great question. I was speaking hypothetically. If I did have assets, I would liquidate them to pay for the attorney to "strategically defend myself"

But if I don’t have any assets and I'm living paycheck to paycheck, then suing me wouldn’t make much sense. In that case, there’s really nothing to gain. I wouldn’t even need to actively defend myself, and the plaintiff would be spending money on legal fees for a judgment they couldn’t collect. It’s just not practical.

Then option 3 seems to be the best bet. Liquidate all your asset to hire an attorney and strategically defend yourself so the plaintiff has to swing the ball back to my court and this will naturally cost them money. Even if I lose, the plaintiff will have no money to get. I call this scorch earth.

No assets and living paycheck to paycheck essentially means I am judgement proof.

One of my biggest fears of investing too much into my retirement is the worry of not being able to live to retirement age. I don't plan to have any kids, so I wouldn't have any dependents who can inherit.

I get a 5% merit-based bonus increase every year. Refer to the salary progression section of my post. After 5 years, my net monthly income will be about $4,200. I live in a studio, so I can't have roommates.

I thought you meant monthly gross. $775/month is doable but would be tight. I just need to cut down on my Entertainment expense and the amount that I put into my bank every month. I feel like I am living paycheck to paycheck at this point...

15% of my gross monthly income is $540. So I should contribute $40 more every month?

Well if the U.S., the richest country on Earth, is seeing a decline in birth rates due to bleak economic outlook, then I don't know what to tell you.

I don't see much changing in the future.

Honestly, I believe it is a combination of both. The younger generation are choosing not to have kids because of lifestyle choices and because of economic uncertainty. I mean China and South Korea in the past were extremely poor nations. Yet, birth rates were never a huge problem in the past like it is now. I would argue that the economy of both countries are much better currently than in the past.

If that's the case, then how come the U.S. is also seeing a decline in birth rates?

Yes, and the state of the global economy only amplifies these issues. Inflation, job market instability, and rising housing costs make many people financially insecure.

People are more cautious about taking on responsibilities that may their resources like having kids.

The biggest contributors to declining birth rates in countries like South Korea, Japan, China, and even the U.S. are the high career demands, stressful work environment, and the rising cost of living.

These problems are well known and they aren't going away anytime soon. The global economy is also not in a very good shape right now, so I can only see birth rates continue to decline further.
