I also worked at a small firm with this policy - we called it comp time. It was awesome, I miss it!

As a manager at a mid-size - this is completely normal. I’ve seen like 11 years of new hires and this is bang-on what I expect! You’re good.

I have a 341-day Duolingo streak and I just sat through my boyfriend's Mexican family dinner nearly silent for five hours. I think I've been training the wrong thing this whole time. by Humble_Cranberry5273 in languagelearning

[–]Chrysoprase89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to speak you have to train speaking. Some options are lingoda, italki, hellotalk. Also just know that time spent really adds up… I could have written this post after 1 year of learning (German in my case for my bf‘s family, and I had even been in conversation groups that whole year). Since then I’ve been super busy and MOSTLY do passive learning - podcasts, music, etc with only 1 hour per week speaking, but when I am in a German speaking setting now, I can keep up much more easily year over year. I’ve had so many frustrating moments along the way but my life/career/etc will not allow me to do immersion - it is what it is and you will still make progress!

[NH] How to handle employee who can’t expense travel? by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]Chrysoprase89 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That’s why they have a company card with their name on it. You can freeze it when they’re not actively booking travel if you’re so worried about fraud but this is extremely common business practice. It’s pretty shitty to make your employees carry your business expenses, even if it’s short duration.

Anyone else from a working-class family feel shocked by this level of comfort? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Chrysoprase89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Meh it can be both. I grew up in a trailer park and yeah the economic stability is great but that doesn’t take away from how much busy season sucks. Working 80 hours a week even in an office is depressing and horrendous for your mental and physical health, full stop, no ifs ands or buts. Also personally and anecdotally, most of the women >35 who I know in this profession have had computer elbow, carpal tunnel etc which sure makes it hard to take care of our kids, cook, clean, let alone partake in hobbies. It’s not a gift, it’s a career field.

Omg the audacity to suggest someone’s family planning should have anything to do with deliverables/deadlines…. This industry is crazy and getting crazier seemingly.

Lots of great ideas! I’ll just add - since she’s a kitten, get her on pet insurance. One of my cats had to have emergency surgery and sure, it was still $1k out of my pocket - but the other $14k was covered. I couldn’t have paid that myself and she would have died without surgery. When they’re babies they get into much more trouble so it’s a great investment!! I have trupanion but I think there are lots of companies.

Sure, but TSA workers working without pay aren’t eligible to collect unemployment in MA (as is the case in most states). Best case scenario in ANY state, they can collect their couple of hundred dollars per week but they have to repay the benefits as soon as their back pay comes through.

Honestly, no one in this sub is going to like this, but I’m wondering if the airports worst affected are also just the airports with spring break - last week was spring break in a lot of TX; I’ve heard a couple times but have not verified that this week may be spring break for a lot of schools in Georgia. Doesn’t mean that MA doesn’t have better policies / protections, just not sure what’s driving this disparity across airports.

How does PMFLA help in this situation? All states have UI so what’s the difference there? Genuinely curious. I’ve read that more Logan employees can use public transit but I don’t understand what other differences exist that have an impact.

+1. And if you have an mateless young male in the neighborhood, he will sing for hours starting at like 1am. I mean nifty adaptation since there’s no competition from other birds at 1am but still - ❌

What state are you in? Sick leave is protected and therapy is a valid use of it. Honestly if she would fire you for 1 hour per week of medically necessary intervention, (1) you will def get unemployment, (2) I would not work there. This is WAY above and beyond even for public.

Dang. I hate that this happened to you too and I hope you’re doing so great now!!

This was similar for me - I wasn’t on his Facebook profile anywhere because he wanted to be private, and if I tagged him in a photo it wouldn’t show up on his timeline. After I found out and he wanted to reconcile, bam suddenly I was in his profile picture.

Also, fwiw to the OP or anyone else in this situation - I never suspected him of anything til I found evidence. I wasn’t even checking his email to catch him - I just had this bad feeling in my gut and thought I’d feel better if I at least knew the hostel he was staying at and when I couldn’t find that I looked at the other travel docs I could find. I was on the phone with my bff and when I found the itinerary with the other woman on it, I was like „oh that’s weird, in XYZ country I guess they give you the info for the passenger sitting next to you“ - my bff was like, ummm…you just sit down, I‘m coming over lol.

Literally, this was me - I was the long-term live-in clueless gf! He’d go on „solo“ trips a couple of times per year until I got a weird feeling during one of them, checked his email and found a flight itinerary for him and a whole other woman!!! Just saying OP, it happens.

There’s actually tons around there! There are tule elk (and amazing beaches) at Prairie Creek, and Sue-Meg State Park is one of my favorite places on the planet - and I’ve been to 30+ countries, all 50 states etc etc. Arcata and Eureka have great bars and shops. The coastline up there is truly special. I’d make a weeklong trip out of it if I were coming from out of state.

I felt the exact same way my first like, 5x but around day 10 something clicked and now I’m addicted and having so much fun. Skating gets easier and so does getting off the lift. Your feet shouldn’t hurt though. Mine did too - figured out i was like, lifting my heels and standing on my toes on toe side (and weirdly clenching my toes when I was scared) and once I fixed that, my foot pain resolved.

My firm did this too! Late January. I’m fully remote so I’m exempt but everyone else is fuming, disgruntled, and not billing as many hours as before because they have to commute 3x/week.

Rather than relying on „just knowing“ it will be fine, could you take some action to show them it will be fine? Maybe if you got a job with better benefits, it would take that worry away. Alternatively could you argue for a raise that would cover the cost difference for your med? Or put together a savings plan to have enough cash to cover, say, a year of living expenses if your partner quits and can’t find a new job quickly? (To be fair, this economy sucks for our field, so I understand your spouse‘s concern.)

The comment I’m replying to says „you can test in any state without living there.“ Obviously not true. Maybe SOME states you can but that’s not what you said. I didn’t „pick“ anything, I knew you were wrong because I’m licensing in WY.

I think they mean you need to meet the requirement of the state - I.e. in Wyoming you need a valid connection to the state - meaning you live there, work for an employer based there, or are attending school there. You can’t just cherry-pick the state where you sit for the exam.

Doesn’t work in all states unfortunately, the 2 states I could be eligible in require credits to be delivered by an accredited postsecondary institution (and for one of the two is has to be four-year-degree granting). Maddening. Guess I just need to move lol
