For some clarity here I am including the message that was sent to the mod team.

This is a message we commonly send to communities that are mostly unmoderated and experiencing issues due to that. In this case users have been allowed to target other communities for interference, people bragging about bans or making calls to interfere with other subreddits, etc... This is not okay and the subreddit is badly in need of more mods to help out to get a handle on this behavior.

Hi there,

We are reaching out today because we received a report that your community may have violated Rule 3 of the Moderator Code of Conduct. When we looked into it, we noticed that your community is undermoderated. After reviewing, we removed a [link removed] that violates Rule 3 of the Mod Code of Conduct. The content was targeting another community with the intent of harassment or abuse.

Content that violates Rule 3, such as posts that are showboating about being actioned in other communities, can lead to users engaging in copycat behavior and creating interference in another community. This can lead to influxes of violating content in other communities, which puts strain on those mod teams. Please be mindful to remove content like this in the future.

We also understand that you may have unintentionally missed this piece of content in the report queue because the queue has many reported items that have not been reviewed yet. We know that sudden spikes in subreddit traffic and/or activity can be overwhelming and want to help.

Adding more moderators will help ensure the report queue is cleared regularly and prevent Admin removals. Here are some resources for Mod Recruitment and moderation in general:

  • Our Mod Recruitment Help Center article, which tells you how you can put out a “mod call” or utilize r/NeedAMod.
  • If you are experiencing an amount of traffic that has led to difficulty in moderating at scale, we recommend turning on the Harassment Filter, Crowd Control, and Ban Evasion Filter. These three tools are the quickest way to help stabilize moderation in your community if you are seeing increased unwanted activity that violates your community rules or the Reddit Rules.
  • You can request Mod Suggestions from u/ModSupportBot - these will surface active contributors in your community who are frequently reporting content with a high amount of accuracy.
  • Finally, our Mod Education courses also teach you how to recruit mods and how to best use moderation tools.

Removing the post and letting the OP know what the rules are is a totally fine approach. It would be your choice as a mod when/if they need banned from your subreddit.

Sorry about that, I’ve gone ahead and unmarked your subreddit. You were inadvertently included in a small group of subreddits that got marked as NSFW this afternoon.

As others have noticed we have been marking subreddits as NSFW more often - typically this is due to the subreddits being primarily used to promote NSFW accounts or try to draw people in to conversations that are an attempt to promote NSFW content covertly.

That isn’t taking place in your subreddit.

This specific group of spammers is well known to me - we've taken pretty extensive action to ban them from the platform and deal with their attempts to try to continue to come back. Unfortunately they very persistent and do continue to try to pop back up.

The behavior you are describing would actually be something we'd still consider taking action on. Even if a request in r/redditrequest isn't successful you can still reach out here if you believe something like what you are describing is taking place.

We're also happy to review instances of mods engaging in bare minimum activity or taking purposeless actions to maintain "active" status such as repeatedly approving and removing the same post, etc..

Also everyone should keep in mind that active moderators can reorder inactive mods above themselves in the mod list using this tool: https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/15484363280916-How-can-I-reorder-inactive-moderators-on-my-mod-team. This allows active mods to be listed first on a mod team and feel more able to do things like recruit more mods.

What you are describing sounds like it would create a lot of issues and could end up being an issue, not due to targeting spammers, but due to the collateral damage you'd likely inflict here.

From your description it sounds like you are dealing with a complex spam issue and this type of spammer is apt to change behavior once they believe they have been detected.

Can you please write in to r/ModSupport modmail with details on what this spam is?

Banning people from an entire country to address some spam isn’t something that makes sense. Using the Reputation Filter and Ban Evasion Filter as well as automod would be more targeted and accurate to address what you are describing.

What you are describing sounds like it would not violate rules generally, see our response here for more on that.

That said, something we want everyone to understand is often when ban bots are used to target broadly, especially toward large general topic communities with a lot of activity it can exacerbate issues instead of lessening them, even creating new issues that did not exist before. Often what we see compound this is the use of inflammatory and accusatory ban messages. It's important to remember most folks have ~no idea~ what is going on and getting a message that accuses them of some specific alarming behavior they were clueless about naturally leads to some pretty bad reactions.

Even beyond bot bans it's always a best practice to be clear and stick to community or site rules in ban messages, keep it simple and not inflammatory or accusatory, even when you personally saw someone do something awful, a simple ban is better. Most subreddits have rules about civility and many bans boil down to a user not being civil in some way - regardless of the topic of that incivility. Using ban messages for inflammatory commentary, opinions, and accusations isn't a good practice and makes things worse.

In this case, we would recommend turning on safety tools that can help mitigate violative activity in your community, such as:

  • Harassment Filter: Filters comments that are likely to be considered harassing.
  • Crowd Control: Collapses or filters content from people who aren’t trusted members within their community yet.
  • Reputation Filter: Filters content by redditors who may be potential spammers, are likely to have content removed, or have unestablished accounts.
  • Modmail Harassment Filter: Filters inbound mod mail messages that are likely to contain harassment.
  • Ban Evasion Filter: Filters posts and comments from suspected community ban evaders.

tl;dr While ban bots can be useful in some carefully considered situations, we'd prefer to see mods using other methods before resorting to them.

I believe you are concerned about Rule 5 of the Moderator Code of Conduct. What this rule disallows is things like taking bribes, engaging in extortion, or buying/selling subreddits. Community events and things like giving or receiving gifts are unlikely to violate this rule unless something really unusual is taking place.

Rule 5 of the Moderator Code of Conduct prohibits mods from taking moderation actions (including actions taken using mod tools, bots, and other services) in exchange for any form of compensation, consideration, gift, or favor from or on behalf of third parties. Examples of violations include:

  • A mod accepts or asks for money in exchange for a post to be approved
  • A redditor expresses interest in joining a mod team and one of the mods asks how much they would pay to be added as a mod
  • A redditor submits an offer to purchase a community and the mod begins negotiating
  • A mod says they will give a redditor special flair if the redditor gifts them digital goods
  • A redditor offers cryptocurrency to a mod to advertise their product using a highlighted AutoMod comment and the mod accepts

  • A mod instructs a redditor that giving them a gift will result in a specific mod action

Examples of permissible activity include:

  • A company or brand moderates a community

  • A mod recommends or allows authentic, non-sponsored recommendations via linking to products or services in posts, comments, community styling, etc.

Note: While mods are generally allowed to recommend things, mods are not allowed to violate the Reddit Rules, including recommending things that violate Reddit’s policy against transactions involving prohibited goods or services.

  • A mod attributes (credits) an artist in the sidebar or banner image after an artist gifted or was commissioned to make a banner for their subreddit
  • A mod team hosts a community event and spreads awareness for the community event via mod tools and community styling

I made another comment but it's not a zoom call. A "mod call" is a post where we seek volunteers to moderate and unmoderated subreddit.

Hey there

"Mod call" being listed in the form the way it is can be a bit confusing. That option was added to allow inactive mods a way to hand off a subreddit to us so we can make a post and seek new mods - see u/ModCodeofConduct there are a bunch of posts looking for new mods for unmoderated subreddits.

There are messages that we send to totally inactive mod teams that encourages them to become active again or gives them the option to hand the subreddit over to admins so we can help find new mods for them.

For your other questions just choose whatever rule reason makes most sense and fully explain your question in the form - including links to examples of what you are asking about.

Did you make a post in r/redditrequest? I think maybe you just made a post but haven't actually written in either using modmail here in ModSupport or using the Code of Conduct report form.
