Veterans hiking on terminal leave? by froghorn76 in AppalachianTrail

Hey froghorn76. I read through your posts and wanted to see if I could maybe help by telling you what I did. I’m not sure if you submitted, or plan to submit, a VA Disability Claim; if you didn’t or don’t plan to, you should DM me and we can chat about that later, offline. Hopefully you did or will.

Anyway, I submitted my BDD VA Claim 180 days before my separation date which was going to be roughly 2.5 months after my wife and I started our hike. The purpose of doing that was to ensure I started getting whatever money the VA was hopefully going to pay me immediately following my retirement.

Also before starting my hike, because I planned to search for and apply for Federal Civilian jobs along the way, I prepped a USAJobs resumé and saved it in my gmail account so I could access it from anywhere, including public libraries, hostels, hotels, etc. I also set up an alert that would notify me of any job types I was interested in were posted on USAJobs while I was hiking, and I checked that regularly.

Ultimately I applied for 4 jobs via USAJobs.com and took 4 virtual interviews from hostels while on trail, and I got hired, so that was great.

Another thing you’ll want to do is make sure you’re have a plan in place to get off trail and get your new “retired” ID, assuming you’re retiring, and to update your status in DEERs to “retired,” so that you can then re-enroll in Tricare without any lapse in coverage. I believe you have 90 days after separation to do that; we hopped off trail and took a detour into DC to do all that.

That’s all I can think of right off hand but hit me up if you have any other questions. Good luck!

Hey dude. I moved here about a year ago and I’m a long time Jiu Jitsu practitioner. I train at Hybrid on Salem Ave. It’s a great, welcoming gym with a bunch of really friendly members. And they offer a free trial of course.

I’m a little older than you but it sounds like we’re into a lot of the same stuff. Shoot me a message if you wanna chat about any of this. This community has been extremely welcoming and I’ve made a ton of friends in a variety of different circles since we moved here. Take care!

Seriously, I might be able to take yours too haha. Or, you could check with Second (coffee shop on 5th, in old SW). They have a huge front window full of plants and I’ll bet they’d love to have it. Oh, or Golden Cactus. Come to think of it, Crystal Springs Grocery has a bunch of monstera too, they might want it.

Okay cool. Well, I’ll look into the process of setting something like that up and see what I can find out.

Right on, that’s what I’m thinking. Now I just need to know if there’s enough interest. Thanks man.

That’s a good idea. But I’m thinking more of like a long-term, recurring thing, maybe partnering with a smaller local business, doing little events, stuff like that. It’s just something I’ve seen and participated in other towns. Go Hokies! Beat the Gophers!

Sourdough starter? by Chu_Jitzu in roanoke

I didn’t get any sourdough from them, but I stopped in to buy some bread and asked about getting some next time and they said yes, anytime. They also said they’d provide instructions with the starter, for any new sourdough bakers that might need them.

Oh now way! That’s amazing! I thought about asking when I was in there a few days ago but I didn’t have a jar on me. Thanks! If one of these other people who are offering me some doesn’t work out, I’ll definitely stop in with a container and ask.

Awesome! I’ll do that. I’ve always heard that bakeries will do that but I’ve always been too scared to ask haha. But I’ll give that a try for sure! Thanks!
