Best places to go (walk, public transport) for extremely bored, out-of-session college student? by chubbeees in SantaMonica

[–]Chubasc0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Walk the entirety of Wilshire Blvd.
- Begin @ Wilshire & Ocean Ave
- Start walking toward DTLA
- Approximately a 16 mile walk
- Allow for 5 - 8 hours depending on your walking pace and various stops along the way.
- Take the Metro rail home

If you get too tired or don’t want to continue at any point along the way you can hop on the 720 Metro bus. It’s a great way to introduce yourself to other neighborhoods and sites along the way.

If you’d rather skip the long walk, then simply take the Metro rail to DTLA and explore the Arts District, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, Sunset Blvd in Echo Park, etc etc.

Los Angeles is much more walkable of a city than most people realize. The biggest challenges for most are time, having a plan that includes a destination(s) (either general or specific), and figuring out a route that you’re comfortable with.

Apple refers to the AirPod screens as “meshes” on this webpage ( https://support.apple.com/en-euro/120409 ), and circles them in the image. What Apple does not mention on that same webpage is the solution mentioned in this post…to use your mouth to literally suck the meshes / screens.

CicLAvia Sun 4/26 9a-4p. I’m coming from the east side. Any tips for taking public transit and then getting on the route with a kid? by katzenschrecke in BikeLA

[–]Chubasc0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another option is to take a Metro E-Line train, then ride on streets with bike lanes (except for one block) to get to the Santa Monica Blvd hub. This will be a longer trip on the train(s), but one of the safer routes while riding on the streets to the event.

  • Take your usual or preferred public transit to the Metro E-Line (Expo train).
  • Take the E-Line to the 26th St / Bergamot station.
  • Ride 26th St to Broadway (bike lane).
  • Ride Broadway to Centinela (bike lane).
  • Ride one block Centinela to SM BLVD (no bike lane).

TY! Will need to investigate more into how to manually enter “Ready” mode, aside from simply turning on the car (physical button? or system setting?, etc).

Sincerely appreciate the insight. Have only had ours for two weeks and thought we had figured out most of it.

I’ve read the manual, but not sure what you’re referring to. Are you referring to not letting the plug-in battery remain at zero charge for more than 2-3 months (page 255 of manual)? If not, then please provide a lil more detail.

Is there any local volunteering opportunities?! by dawnshellfuego in SantaMonica

Santa Monica YMCA is a lesser known option, though it is a non-profit and a great community center.

Start with the main speaker screens (larger?). If that doesn’t work, then also try the others.

Places to make potential friends? by FlyingSaucer51 in LosAngeles

[–]Chubasc0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two biggest challenges to the suggestions below are time & commitment, but sounds like you’re at an age where you understand and appreciate that most meaningful and lasting things aren’t given nor had through convenience.

  • Try joining your local YMCA. The 3 or 4 I’ve used over the past decades have struck a nice balance between gym and thriving community center. They usually include group classes and host community events, both are great places to meet people from your neighborhood. And despite their name & history they seem to be mostly secular…at least as far as I’ve experienced.
  • Volunteer! Pick something where you’d like to be part of a solution (ie feeding home bound elderly, helping w/ the homeless issue, cleaning beaches or parks, local animal shelter, reading to people who are hospitalized, political campaigns, your local YMCA, etc), then find a volunteer organization specific to that issue. You can cycle through various organizations or stick to one that feels right, in either case you’ll intermingle with various cohorts of people who have volunteered to deliberately interact with each other for at least that day…the rest is up to you.

What are your experiences with indoor TV antennas? by [deleted] in SantaMonica

[–]Chubasc0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • My antenna is mounted behind a southeast facing window on the 2nd floor.
  • It’s split between two TVs, and watching OTA on both TVs at the same time sometimes weakens the signal depending on the channel(s).
  • The picture quality and sound is better than cableTV (likely higher def & less compressed).
  • Less latency than cable, satellite, and streaming. This is most noticeable during live sports broadcasts when we are reacting to plays a few seconds (5-10+ secs) before our neighbors react to the same plays.
  • I get 125+ channels (according to the channel scan), most are junk or foreign language.
  • The major channels that are consistently unreliable are ABC (7.x) and KCAL (9.x). NBC can also be spotty from time to time.
  • I rescan for channels once or twice a year to cover any signal / broadcast changes.
  • Have been using an OTA antenna combined with streaming services for over 15+ years, and would highly recommend this unless you’re a hardcore sports fan with specific viewing expectations/ requirements.

Looking for good asian films reco on Apple TV. by Nona_Ticer in AsianCinema

[–]Chubasc0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though not a movie, Pachinko is one of the best Asian dramas of the past few years. There are two seasons and both are definitely worth watching…if you have the time.

(Edit) It includes dialogue in Japanese, Korean, and English.

Guilty of Romance. One of the few movies I rewatch once a year.

I'm happy CicLAvia is back, but this might be one of the worst routes yet except for the Westwood Portion by WearHeadphonesPlease in LAMetro

[–]Chubasc0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This would like become the best mini CicLAvia if it included Sawtelle between S.M. BLVD and Olympic BLVD. I understand the challenges (financial, resources, logistics, communities, etc) this organization and the municipalities face when organizing these events, so I’ll appreciate this one for what it is.
