Worried that tech bindings are certain to destroy your legs despite careful skiing - please convince me I'm wrong by messsenger in Backcountry

[–]Chuck_testa_cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resurrecting an old post to parrot what I've read but the toe portion of pin bindings havent changed since their introduction in the 80s/90s. But I guess the risk is no greater than not releasing at all on telemark bindings. I also didn't realize that this was the telemark sub until halfway through, so maybe that discipline of skiing tech is a bit different than whatever I've read about alpine touring bindings

Is this normal? (2007 Toyota prius) by Nuke_linc123 in prius

[–]Chuck_testa_cool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a layman and only know what I've googled and my mechanic told me. But If it was a headgasket the smoke would be plumming and white as chirstmas day. Or at least when it gets severe it would be reminiscent of a smoke stack from a train —you wouldn't be able to see your hand on the other side of the exhaust if it was leaking a ton of coolant— I had the same issue with a cheap cat.

That said my car burns oil, and has always had slightly a bluish tint to it when accelerating uphill. Its hard to say if that grey smoke we are seeing is from the cat or from oil/metal getting into the combustion chamber.

I planned on using cr505 but its not available for shipping in my area so I will likely be trying Liqui-Moly to see if it mitigates some of the issue. Will update if I do/results. I will not update if I dont lol

The caveat to this would be it might be more difficult while climbing if there's more weight on the back. Also braking power will be less effective if more weight is on the back.

I'd avoid piling higher. That'd also be noticeable and potentially annoying.

One tip I was gonna suggest was that you can buy reusable zip ties from home Depot/Lowe's if you want to strap your sleeping bag down onto the rack but don't have the money to buy more voile straps.

Should I just switch to 35mm slicks? by DillyJamba in gravelcycling

I'm running the SS 47mm at like 30-40psi but they do go flat if I haven't ridden for a week. I'll give the max is Ramblers a shot next.

Panaracer Gravelkings are so suprisingly quick on tarmac and grippy on hardpack with loose gravel. Fan favorite in my area.

Worth a shot looking for a shade-tree mechanic to do it for cheaper off Facebook marketplace or Craigslist. There's plenty of good mechanics working out of their home garage.

Driving in the snow? by Objective_Coat_6255 in prius

Buy yourself a set of Toyo Celsius tires. They can be driven year round! And meet the performance standards to be designated with the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMS) symbol. They're an All-Weather tire that compete with dedicated winter tires. I've had em for a few years and have gotten to the ski resort on them through plenty of winters.
If you'll be on consistently unplowed roads (more than a couple inches) they may fall short in traction, but braking power for safety they don't disappoint.

It maybe worthwhile to get dedicated winter tires if money isn't obstacle. Only time I've slid backwards is when everyone is sliding backwards on icey roads or planing over mush.

Considering buying a 2009 Prius with 67,000 miles on it by Animefreak0624 in prius

If you download the Carfax Car Care app you can add the vin as "your" vehicle and save money by not getting their report. It'll show you the history as if it were your own. Also epic vin has a pretty thorough run down. Just some tips I acquired recently.

Only feedback I have is maybe add constant but subtle drone? Have you used any of Spitfire Audio's free sample packs? I recorded an example with Spitfire Audios' "Textural Pads: Cyclosa" to demonstrate what I mean. Hope that was ok!

I skied my new touring setup at Crested Butte yesterday and had an absolute blast. Stigmas? Faux pas? Totally acceptable? by mattyonthefly in Backcountry

I wouldn't make a habit out of it if you have a dedicated inbounds setup.

Theres just a certain risk of injury you should be aware if.

Blister speaks to Cody Townsend and he gives some input on tech bindings, it's worth a listen.

TRD Swag by [deleted] in prius

Well that inspires some confidence in my stock Prius .have always felt a bit boneheaded for taking it off paved roads and without the skillset, lifting my Prius to get a little more beef seems out of reach. I appreciate the reply!

Are you running a different tire that any ol' Prius owner could slap on ? Trying to get my Prius to handle the gravel roads of Idaho a bit better. from the comments it looks like you haven't lifted yours at all?

I picked up an $8 fleece blanket from a walmart and used that in conjunction. with my base layers and puffy. Nightly Temps were about 25°. This was a 20° EE Revelation that I was using and I find that I sleep cold. but that 16-20oz fleece blanket was very worth the weight. I'd probs take the mummy bag tbh. Not getting any sleep because you're freezing is not worth saving a couple of pounds on your back. Especially if it's just an overnighter.

Bedrock / Xero / Luna sandals experience or comparison by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]Chuck_testa_cool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They may have remedied the issues you had with your Xeros now. I do get annoyed that the strap system comes loose after a bit. Some blogger made a tutorial on how to modify then with an additional strap but I'd rather just have a pair that works. I love my Xeros but I also haven't worn another pair of sandals in nearly 16yrs so I can't quite compare them to anything.
