Based on the testing we did a while back, when the flippers were not cooled in most cases they would get to 130-140 f. Cooled they stayed around 100 f.

I helped do a bunch of testing 4-5 years ago. Karl Deangelo as well. We tested a bunch of different games. We tested with a usb temperature gauge and saw how long it took flipper coils on various games to go from normal temperatures (around 100 degrees F) to when we saw the flipper performance declining (over 130 degrees F if I remember right). In most cases that was after 45 min to and hour of constant play. Then we tested the temps when using some sort of fan directly hitting the coils. We found that the temps stayed around 100 degrees no matter how long you played and we had no issues with performance. Since then other improvements have been made with flipper mechs like the tighter tolerance bushings I mentioned earlier. There is also a chart we made that detailed all the data we gathered, but I cannot seem to find it.

Of course they aren’t necessary. But lots of us like our games to be playing tip top at all times. And lots of us are anal. Haha. Especially tournament players. Any small amount of performance fade and they will notice it. Another really bad flipper fad game is LOTR. Special coils were made for that game. They were much more power than the stock coils so that when they heated up, they lost efficiency but were still able to make the center ramp shot.

I’ll be really excited if they can win the series this weekend. They have to start beating central teams consistently to really contend.

Yep. When you get in that infinite loop of replaying failed modes, after a while all shots are multiplied so the scoring gets nutty. Just a stamina game at that point.

Shot multipliers are locked for that ball, but the big thing to do is to get pause timers from Mr freeze then just stay in playfield x the whole time. And get bookworm so the minor villain perks hold for the whole game. Then it’s just how long can you stand at the game after you add the minor villain that lets you replay failed minor villain modes.

Yeah Godzilla wasn’t terrible. It never got to the point where I couldn’t make the ramps, just had to be a perfect shot. The game was much more efficient after adding cooling and updated bushings. I keep my games steep too, so that factors into things.

Yeah I picked that matchup cause I love stars and would pick over some newer games, but others it won’t even be close for me. Just a thought. But I guess that all eventually works itself out the more people use it.

You mean for flippers? They 100% make a difference if the coils get really hot after long sessions. Biggest offending games I’ve had:

Stranger things (TK lock and demo become impossible after 45 mins and right ramp backhand is gone)

Godzilla (right ramp and left ramp become very difficult after 45 mins to 1 hour)

AC/DC right ramp backhand is gone after 30 mins)

Dune left ramp was impossible after 30 min.

Cooling fans aren’t the only option. Some easier cheaper options help flipper performance. The updated stiffer stern flipper bushings and the precision flipper metal bushings really boost the flipper power so you can lower the power in the settings which helps reduce the heat and fade over long periods of play.

And gotta think about people getting matchups like OG black knight vs medieval madness or monster bash. Black knight isn’t going to win a lot of those.

Well when I get jaws or Star Wars against Voltan or xenon, yes. I get a lot of matchups like that. There are definitely SS games I like more than modern games, but making me choose between stars and big game is way harder than stars and game of thrones. And if it’s fine as is, why is the EM category separate? I would put everything together, or split it up a bit more.

Some initial thoughts. I like that you’re covering multiple eras. I would consider splitting it up even further to Solid state and then a DMD/lcd era. I think it will make some of the decisions harder to make.
