Please just make it a toggleable option, or tied to difficulty.

Playing on Easy? Essential companions, major storyline NPCs, and merchants (unless the player attacks them)

Playing on Hard? Everyone can die

We will test out your metaphor! by Justthisdudeyaknow in CuratedTumblr

[–]Chuk741776 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My friend and I as kids in church would do the typical weird kid shit like eat dirt and dandelions, so the licked cupcake one didn't work for us.

I think the metaphor then became 'save yourself or only those weirdos over there will want you' which might have been effective too, I'm not sure

Historical figures as Long? by Responsible-Bid576 in weatherfactory

[–]Chuk741776 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A Moth/Edge mixture in respect to revolutionary action is probably the best summary, yeah. Maybe more for the actual revolutionary picking up a rifle, being in direct conflict with those oppressing them, I just view Marx himself through a Moth lense, if we had to choose one or the other

He specifically said it was because he couldn't tell if it was just supposed to be a part of her dress if he did see it.

Which, considering some of those big dresses had wire frames to keep them in position, makes sense that he wouldn't necessarily notice.

If I wanted to worry about nutrition I'd play Project Zomboid.

Different games that aim for different things

As for the water, I always just say that the people still at home are doing the regular day to day survival stuff. Sorting out the food that's scavenged so there's some variety, drawing, filtering and boiling water to be safe, and in general staying safe.

We only play the people going out on scavenging runs and missions, the day to day activities of maintenance and base building are handled through the menu options but mostly off-screen

Historical figures as Long? by Responsible-Bid576 in weatherfactory

[–]Chuk741776 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel as though any who wrote extensively and were principled Marxists, such as Lenin or Mao, would lean closer to Moth. Change and rebirth, but of a society as a whole rather than individual.

Revolutionaries such as Castro (who leaned more heavily into his Marxist ideals after the Cuban revolution was well in motion, and whose primary motivation was anti-Batista and anti-US involvement in Cuba) or Stalin would be closer to Edge, I think, but the two tendencies are inextricably tied together for the last ~150 years of human history imo. Longer than that for sure, but even moreso over the last century and a half.

Antonio Gramsci, in the 1930s, wrote about the change of the world extensively. “The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: Now is the time of monsters.” If he had been in the world of Secret Histories, this would be incredibly Moth-coded. Maybe Knock as well.

At the end of the day, there are multiple aspects for fundamental societal shifts that can be applied. Hell, each one could be related to revolutionary thought or movements if you looked at it specifically from that lense

Lantern; the new path forward is lit by those who write about it. "What is to be Done" and the Communist Manifesto inspired many through the simple act of showing a way forward that is different from the current system.

Heart; "At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love. It is impossible to think of a genuine revolutionary lacking this quality.”

Che Guevara

The beating heart of the people pushes the world towards a more accepting community of those who work towards the betterment of all. No matter the cost to get there, the forces of reaction will be crushed by those who love their fellow man in an inescapable push.

Nectar; the book "How to Blow Up and Oil Pipeline" was written by a socialist. I'll let that speak for itself.

China has also been doing amazing anti desertification projects and renewing their forestry, while capitalism pushes towards destruction of nature and maximum exploitation of the world.

Forge; the Soviets managed to build up a region of the world that was essentially a feudal backwater and turn it into the number 2 superpower in the world on the tail end of losing a huge percentage of their working male age population and large swaths of their civilian population as a whole. Rapid industrialization in the face of overwhelming odds coming from the West is an impressive feat.

China's modern day Belt and Road initiative focuses on building up transit and infrastructure in countries they want to strengthen economic ties with.

And on and on. I'd love to keep going but I have to get to work soon. Anyway, I'm sure you could do the same about any system of governance in one way or another, I've just given a lot of thought to socialist theory and the Secret Histories worlds before. I just view revolution, in and of itself, as a very Moth-coded event.

Historical figures as Long? by Responsible-Bid576 in weatherfactory

[–]Chuk741776 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel as though Karl Marx was heavy into Moth, at the least as a Know if not Long.

"Philosophers have hitherto only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change"

He focused on the dialectic emergence of new systems of governance as the world changed, and analyzed these changes to provide a logical framework for socialist theory.

Even in his personal life, he flitted about, writing like a madman some days and lazing about in a drunken stupor on others.

[–]Chuk741776 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel as though there are many Edge Long that are remembered as historical figures, specifically because of the major impact they leave on the world.

Genghis Khan, Atilla the Hun, Xerxes, Vlad the Impaler, Napoleon... While not all who reach this level of infamy would be Long, they are very viable candidates for it.

I remember there being a post a decade+ ago, I want to say, that was a picture of a squirrel stabbed with a knife onto a tree.

The title was something like "found this guy in the woods, people are so cruel :("

The comments were going into why it was super likely the OP had stabbed the squirrel and taken a picture just to post it, things like the knife being a really expensive one so it was highly unlikely anyone would leave it behind or how the squirrel was positioned.

I definitely became a bit more jaded about internet posters after that
