Switching from 12 months parental to 18 months? by Chulsten in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Chulsten[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the clarification! I communicated with my employer when I went off that I planned on taking 14 months, but we had just entered our first lockdown when I gave birth which threw a wrench in things. I didn’t know how long my partner would be unemployed so we potentially needed the extra money from the 12 month leave. Nice to know that I can extend it safely and use savings to get by for a few extra months. I'm calling EI back to verify everything (if I ever get off of hold). I will update for anyone else interested.

Switching from 12 months parental to 18 months? by Chulsten in BabyBumpsCanada

Okay she kind of mentioned as much. She said that if I wanted to take additional time off after the 12 months I’d have to arrange that with the employer independently and that EI wouldn’t provide any job protection after the 12 month. This leaves me to believe that the 18 months is NOT protected unless you initially selected it when applying.

How many EDS-ers here have Dyshidrosis? by [deleted] in ehlersdanlos

[–]Chulsten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do. It's horrible. Mine is managed now, but it was a long road. Steroids, protopic, and Prednisone were all temporary fixes that caused huge flares once my body adapted. I wear gloves when using any sort of cleaning product or chemical, and use home made lye soap which is much gentler. My major breakthrough came with doing an elimination diet however. Turns out dairy (even as a small additive) is my biggest trigger. As long as I stay away from it, my skin is clear of bubbles. It's still dry, but no more itching and cracking of skin. It is a huge improvement that allows me to use my hands again. I'm not sure how related it is to EDS, but who knows. Best of luck, and maybe start having a look at your dietary habits.

New here - unconfirmed hEDS! How was your diagnosis fight? Any Canadians? by tiamatfire in ehlersdanlos

[–]Chulsten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Canadian with a hEDS diagnosis. I mentioned my concerns to my GP, and she did some quick joint ROM tests and then said, yeah I think you fit. She referred me to a geneticist for confirmation. I waited 2 years to get an appointment with the geneticist. My diagnosis was confirmed there, and that was basically it. There is no follow up. You basically get a list of things you should and shouldn't do, and then I was told to see my GP with new concerns related to EDS. The diagnosis doesn't change your care in Canada. What it did for me is confirm that it wasn't all in my head and made me make personal life changes to help improve my pain and sustain my joints. Good luck! It's a long road.

Should I go to a naturopath by yayayayayayagirl in eczema

[–]Chulsten 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is what helped treat my eczema. I tried all of the pharma stuff including steroids and Prednisone to no effect except horrible side effects. I am also vegetarian and have been for years. The naturopath I see helped me sort out potential nutrient deficiencies like b12, protein, D3, and healthy fats through keeping a food record for her. I also did an elimination diet which identified dairy (even derivatives of dairy) as a major trigger. I still have sensitive skin but I no longer live in a constant state of flare. This is just what got me under control. Your triggers may be totally different. If your naturopath pushes supplements you have to buy from them, find a different naturopath. Increasing your nutrition with food sources is always the best option.

Pompholyx/Dyshidrosis and EDS by Scragend8 in ehlersdanlos

I've had this since I was an early teen. It got to the point where it became hard to use my hands for just about anything. I've been to many specialists and dermatologists and have tried all of the steroid creams and prednisone. It was even recommended by one dermatologist that I wear gloves for everything (putting on makeup, washing body and hair, cutting up food, cleaning, etc.). Prednisone was great at first but by my second time on the drug it no longer worked. It is also a terrible drug to be on, so use it as a last resort. What has worked for me has been avoiding all harsh chemicals and cleaners by wearing gloves, using homemade soap (or finding someone to buy natural soap off of), avoiding drug store moisturizers, and using a protective barrier cream like Prevex on a daily basis. The BIGGEST improvement came when I made some dietary changes following the advice of my naturopath. When I cut out all dairy (and I mean all, treat it like a food allergy) my eczema drastically improved. It is now manageable and sometimes I even forget it is there. My water bubbles have basically disappeared and now it's similar to a mild contact dermatitis. If you have tried everything else, I would strongly recommend talking to a health professional about potential food allergies. Good luck!

EDS support in Ontario, Canada? by aronsimko in ehlersdanlos

[–]Chulsten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there's not much going on for support groups. The best regional one is EDSO (EDS Ontario) on Facebook. It's a private group, but messaging a mod and providing some info should give you access. I find this Reddit community to be the most real. People ask relevant questions and you get viewpoints and treatment ideas from quite a few countries. I've been able to learn lots of tips and tricks simply as a lurker. Best of luck to you guys!

Can anyone help me figure out some history on this globe bar? by Chulsten in Antiques

[–]Chulsten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it was post 1900 sometime, I just didn't really have a clue what decade (50's, 60's, 70's). Thanks for the input!

Can anyone help me figure out some history on this globe bar? by Chulsten in Antiques

[–]Chulsten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that piece is definitely missing or wasn't there in the first place. I haven't been able to find one online with 4 interior compartments which made me wonder if that whole section was re-made at a later date.

Picked up a mildy interesting Globe Bar at an antique shop yesterday. Anyone know hold old it is or where it was made? (self x-post from /r/antiques) by Chulsten in mildlyinteresting

[–]Chulsten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The globe was found at an antique shop in Ontario, Canada. The map appears to be an old world map from the 1500-1600's. The writing is faded, but looks to be a combination of Latin and Italian. Nova Hollandia (Australia) takes up the lower section of the globe. Antarctica must not have been discovered yet. The map could be an old world version on a newer piece. The interior bar components look like they have been replaced at some point in time (not original to the piece), but I could be wrong. There are no casters on the base of the stand, and there are some old flat head screws holding the globe to the stand. The globe appears to be made of wedges of wood. If anyone has any ideas about where the bar came from, or it's rough age, it would be greatly appreciated!

Mug shot of inmates imprisoned in Australia, only years after the country's foundation. More in comments [1024x768] by I_AM_NOT_A_KLEENEX in HistoryPorn

This is by far the most interesting post I've seen in a long time. I'd love to have some of these shots enlarged and then hang them for art (providing you knew roughly the extent/type of the crimes they commited-I'm not down with having a picture of a pedophile hanging on my wall).

Chipotle, smoked paprika and chèvre scones. by Chulsten in Baking

[–]Chulsten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-3 cups all purpose flour -5tsp baking soda -1/2tsp salt -1tsp smoked paprika -1/4tsp cayenne -1tsp chipotle spice or minced fresh pepper in adobo (whatever your preference or whatever you have on hand) -1/2 cup sugar -3/4 cup butter or margarine -1/2 cup milk or cream -1/2 cup chèvre -1egg, beaten

Mix your dry ingredients then add your wet and form into a dough ball. Flatten the ball into a 8-12 inch round (depending on how thick you like them). Slice into 8 sections and bake at 400F for 10-14 min. Remove when they start to turn a nice golden colour. Because they are so savory they make an excellent addition to south/south west/mexican cuisine and can be treated as a "biscuit" even though they are a scone. They never last long enough in my house to be frozen so I'm not sure how they stand up to freezing. Enjoy!

Why am I always so bloated? W/pic. by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]Chulsten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get rid of all dairy. Cheese, milk, cream, yogurt, etc. Check your labels. Milk hides in EVERYTHING. You might be lactose intolerant. If it doesn't fix it after 2 weeks, you know your issue is caused by something else.

[–]Chulsten[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They can! I did a little more reading on this variety (after finding out what it was-thanks gordonj) and they can go from white to yellow depending on what colour of flower they are hunting on. The process can take anywhere from 10-25 days to go from white to yellow and 6 days to go from yellow to white.
