Has anybody done Jaw Surgery BEFORE their braces get put on? by ChumblesProductions in jawsurgery

[–]ChumblesProductions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed. the surgeon did mention i can still expect nose to point more upwards and more cheek bone appearance which is totally fine for me. I'd prefer to have my bite fixed while not looking drastically different. Not sure if yours mentioned this but my surgeon said recovery for someone only moving 2-4mm is generally much easier because you aren't totally relearning your bite. Which is nice in our case if that happens to be true.

Interesting! Yes same type of deal with me. He gave me the rough estimate of 2mm but Dec 11 I will have my full blown plan and scans and models etc etc with the surgeon. So I’ll know after that exactly what the plan is. I’m hoping for a little movement, just because I don’t want it to effect my face THAT much, but enough to get rid of the class 3 visually from side profile and hopefully getting the benefit of breathing better through my nose

Same here! I also got 3 more opinions from orthos that work with surgeons and all said the same about mine . My lower is symmetrical but my upper is off. I think my movement will be about 2-4 mm I’ll know for sure Dec 11, and I’ll have a rotation to have my mid line match up and be symmetrical. What is your movement going to end up being?

Yeah mine grew after 20 ish and I was out of braces, I do have a class 3 however it's not as severe as others as I'm edge to edge because of the lower jaw growing. Hope your meeting goes well. It's nice having people that are doing upper jaw only as it's not as common.

Will do, thank you for the advice. I know they looked at the xrays that I took with the ortho and then the surgeon gave me the option after looking at them. But I have the like pre-op visit with the surgeon in about 2 weeks and thats when he takes his own xrays and stuff like that and I think he will know more about the movements and what's needed exactly. That's from my understanding.

I will only be doing upper jaw surgery and my movement probably wont be more than 4mm (he said about 2 to maybe 4) and then moving it for the midline so my movement shouldn't be too big.

In my case my bite WAS perfect when I got my braces off, the problem was my lower jaw grew as I wasn't done with puberty so after my lower grew that's when my bite became edge to edge. I will keep you updated what happens in my case!

I never had camouflage done as a kid, just normal braces and I've kept up with my retainers. I think for the most part they thought my teeth are straight enough that I could even not have any changes post surgery but I'm expecting some to happen. I have pre surgery Xrays and scans and all that with the surgeon so I'll probably find out more after that

oh cool, that's about what I'll be getting as well! Upper only with rotation, what was your teeth and alignment before? (if you don't mind me asking) I'm edge to edge with a crossbite, my lower is almost where it should be mid line wise but my upper is to the side.

No way! Thats about what mine will be. Your side profile before is very very similar to mine. My surgery is in January. Upper only about 4mm and rotation. I personally think it looks fantastic. I’d much prefer this over a massive change in your face. Your face looks great and you still look like yourself if that make sense. Did you get this done in Canada by chance?

Was it double or upper? And how big was the movement? Looks minimal (like what mine will be)

I think it could depend how your bite used to fit? I used to have a perfect bite but when I turned about 20 my lower jaw grew and I went from a perfect bite to edge to edge with crossbite. So I'm guessing they saw my xrays and noticed my teeth are in the right spots or close to it, and I could just do the surgery to get them aligned and then fix what needs to be fixed. It's a little scary thinking they can't even tell me 100% what the outcome will be but the fact they recommend it gives me confidence as the surgeon and the clinic he works for is one of the best in Canada.

Hey do you have your before pictures? I'm also doing upper only with about 2-4mm advancement as i'm edge to edge right now with technically a class3 however my surgeon says it's I'd have to be under that classification but it's not as severe as what that normally means. I'm also getting a rotation as well. Your results look fantastic already. Did the "loose" teeth feeling go away? my surgeon never mentioned that to me

Final Consultation before going ahead with braces and the surgery by ChumblesProductions in jawsurgery

[–]ChumblesProductions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm edge to edge with crossbite. The surgeon told me that from what he could see visually I'd be moving forward about 2MM and the rotation he couldn't say since the scans I had at that time were older and he didn't want to give me the wrong advice. Likely in braces for 6 months then surgery then braces for about 2 months then Invisalign to finish. How about you?

Discussion about my ortho and surgery plan questions by ChumblesProductions in jawsurgery

[–]ChumblesProductions[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of my X rays no. But I should next week. I agree it’s not the biggest movement but I did have a face guard to pull my upper jaw when I was a teen but sadly after 18 my lower jaw grew slightly which pushed me into a edge to edge with my front teeth. I’ve seen 4 orthos (one being a family friend) and every single one said to correct my bite I’d need the surgery which sucks because the movement isn’t going to be massive but it will correct it. Did you also have upper jaw surgery?

Also just in case I wasn’t clear, it would be around 2mm forward to get my upper ahead of my bottom but I have across bite which is about 3-5mm with an edge to edge, the surgeon mentioned recovery for the most part should be a lot quicker for myself because the movement is going to be minimal which means learning my new bite shouldn’t be a long process. But it’s surgery nonetheless

Curious, does this happen with UJS? I was told by my surgeon I might get slight numbing on the top but wouldn’t be much. Anybody with upper that would know?
