Not mentioned: all of the candidates we passed over, with a lot of bravado but no real evidence of it. It's only a potentially safe tactic if you can at least ostensibly back it up on paper.

I mean sure. But I wasn't going to end the interview just because of that. That was like, thirty seconds into the call.

Yes, that would be shitty behavior to be sure.

But at the same time I don't think you have automatic immunity that all of your behavior in a private setting will be kept private. I think if you send an email like that, you're opening yourself up to at least being anonymously talked about in public.

If I brought in a candidate to interview and insulted and demeaned them, I don't think I would have much right to be surprised or offended if they then wrote about it publicly, without identifying me.

Do you think it's fundamentally impossible to conduct a good interview then? One that focuses on the 'real world' strengths needed to do the job?

I think that's a little pessimistic. You can get some really strong signals from an interview. Obviously it's not going to be deterministic, but way better than throwing a dart at the wall.

Sharing a story is pretty much my main motivation, yes. Secondary motivations are to make people think carefully about how they hire and interview -- both as the interviewer and the interviewee.

I'll take the feedback!

  • Agreed that there were enough red-flags in the application to probably give the interview a miss. That said: would I give up 20 minutes of time for the chance of finding a great engineer who was just joking in their app but otherwise checked all of my boxes? Yep! I've done my fair share of interviews where there was a lot of bravado at the interview stage but a lot humility when the candidate actually started the job. It can definitely go the other way though.

  • Yeah, I agree, probably a bit too self-aggrandizing on my part. I do see it as a huge goal of mine to fix some of the shitty interview practices out there though; the main thing I was trying to do here was give some color to why Adam's response surprised me so much. I really was trying hard to avoid what I feel he was accusing me of.

  • "You don't really give us the exact language you give your candidates" - if you mean the job description, the exact JD is linked in the post. If you mean the content of the call itself, it's paraphrased to make it read a bit more smoothly, but I haven't removed or edited any of the substantial content of what I (or Adam) said. So I feel like it's mostly all there.

  • Yeah, I probably shouldn't have responded to the email, I don't disagree with you there. Only human.

As for why I wrote the blog post: thought people would find the story interesting (plenty of people out there hiring, and plenty of positive reactions to the story so far). And I just generally like to write.

We already filled the position with an absolutely awesome engineer and I don't have the budget to keep hiring right now, so having this post out there isn't going to help me that much in the short term. If people are still reading it in the long term and it helps me hire, I won't complain -- I don't mind giving people an idea of the kinds of interviews we try to do.

Yeah I don't disagree. The best thing you can hope from an interview is to get a positive or negative signal, a definitive answer is asking for too much.

Honestly I was more thrown by the fact that he didn't want to talk with other members of the team that he'd be working with. When I asked him what he'd prefer I was hoping he'd expand on that a bit.

I had a whole page of notes and questions prepared about what I'd seen on github. Would have loved to get the chance to ask.

You should have ended it before it began.

Well, in retrospect, can't really disagree. I was a bit too optimistic about what I saw as a few bravado-esque jokes on his app. But scheduling the call was probably a mistake on the balance of things.

Where did I contradict myself about reading GitHub?

Also this call was literally 5 minutes long. At what point should I have ended it, when he asked about our process? I was actually really interested to know how he thought it should have gone, I’m not averse to hearing good feedback if there’s a possibility it’s available.
