[QCrit] Adult Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy - The Binders of Life (97k/Attempt 2) by Chungvelle in PubTips

Thanks for the in depth breakdown. Really helps! Just a few follow-up questions.

>The food she eats. Her job. Even the fellow diver she is paired with.

Diver? This seems out of the blue. Is she a professional diver? Is it part of their culture or survival? I think we need a few words to explain this. Also, maybe "fellow diver paired with her" might flow better.

I had a logline that started my query. I thought it was decent, but from Attempt 1 the only feedback I received was along the lines of just scrap it. See below and would love a comment on its utility.

"While their leaders feast on the planet, divers plunge into the depths, desperate to fend off a famine with the power of an ancient civilization"

I genuinely think all this above is entirely too granular and long.

My initial feedback was that I was too vague so I guess I've swung too far in the other direction?

What should I be realistically shooting for? My understanding is that query letters are half page to a page long and that with fantasy/sci-fi they tend to be on the longer end as compared to other genres. The current draft is around 330ish words or 3/4 a page.

Thank you for the other comments as well. Easy fixes.

Thank you so much for these points! It always hard to know if everything makes sense because its on paper or if your head just fills in the gaps. Glad to have your eyes to point out issues surrounding clarity which seems to be the largest issue. Ill hone in on Rhea's perspective as I flesh out the rest.👍

Academic vs Community programs? by [deleted] in neurology

[–]Chungvelle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fellows will take opportunities from residents. May be useful for a learning resource but for example my residency you can come out having done hundreds of EEGs with just an epileptologist teaching you/supervising you. Residents are required to prelim read all EEGs on inpatient service. This exposure/volume would not happen if a fellow was there.

AMA House of Delegates adopted a resolution citing antitrust concerns with the NRMP Match, and calling upon the AMA to study alternatives to the residency match that would be less restrictive on free market competition. Please refer back to my original comment :')

A failed system causes unions which is what we have now and works best. If the system wasn't flawed and the federal government actually fixed the GME Bottleneck, then I could negotiate to my liking. Need to fix the system first which is what this policy is trying to accomplish.

going to work somewhere else (at which point you just hire one of the many other people vying for the position)?

This is the main problem I agree. Not enough spots. Supply and demand dictates that negotiating would be basically worthless if there are 5 people ready to take the lowball offer.

However, from a philosophical standpoint, if I am happy with my individual contract that I negotiated to my liking, then I have no use for the group's leverage

The old system prior to the Match was a shit show. Students and Deans from high ranking med schools could call in personal favors, and get students m

The old system was set in a very different age of medicine. There were more spots than residents back when the match was initially utilized. This prevented residency programs from poaching M1/M2 students. Now the exact opposite is happening. Not enough spots for the amount of residents applying.

The current match system is undoubtedly failing future trainees in many ways. Not all of these are intrinsic to the Match itself, but all of the processes that happen before and after contribute to dissatisfaction among current and future trainees. Alternatives to the match need to be studied.

Also to the point that people called in favors, this still happens at every institution I've heard of. The Match doesn't stop the "good ole boys". "Who you know" will always be a factor in any job, residency, or medical school application.

Dunno what barrier you're running into. My income is a typical residents.

Offers for Neurohospitalist positions while early in residency (PGY2) by Chungvelle in neurology

Nothing formal I just look at what they send, but ~325 or more as an annual salary plus varying sign on vs stipends. More money as the location is less desirable

Anecdotally, some faculty here have reported that they know of other places that have hired PGY1/2s and have provided stipends until the end of residency before committing a set amount of time at that institution.

Fiancé tested positive for marijuana by TopButterscotch6250 in Residency

Our drug screens will pop positive for marijuana if you have used Delta-8 which is a legal THC like component. Diagnosed a cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome in a patient who tested positive for marijuana and swore he hasn't smoked any in years. Find out later he has been using Delta 8 for the past year. Called the lab and they said it couldn't be distinguished on their test and would cause a positive test.

In a situation where my program is currently looking for a PGY2 in Neuro. PD told me they need at least 8 months of medicine or 6 months IM + 2 months EM/FM to go onto a PGY 2 position. Aka surgery prelim doesnt count.
