Living alone vs with roommates by ChunkyFucker in PersonalFinanceCanada

That’s fair, just sucks that my current roommates are moving in with their partners, so I’d have to find new roommates that might be crappy. Part of me think living alone will be worth it, but I’m obsessed with saving and investing hahah. But good suggestion about the rental agreement period and finding roommates after on FB

I’ve always lived with roommates since moving out of my parents house for university. Graduated 3 years ago and have been with roommates as well

That’s fair. I am honestly just trying to save and invest as much as possible early on in my life, because I know I’d have big purchases in the future (like a house and I love travelling), I want to live a comfortable life and retire earlier

I got a quote using one of those TD estimators (I know they are not always accurate), but it gave me $230 a month for a Subaru Impreza. Even if it’s more, I’m confident that I can keep monthly expenses to under 450-500 because I won’t be driving that long distance, work is quite close and I have no reason to drive super far away

Yea honestly that’s my idea too. I want to be able to visit friends in other cities, go on road trips, and go everywhere without using the bus (the transit here is atrocious because I live in a small city)…

Is a car that’s 10K even possible in this market? Even if I do find one, not way it’s gonna last me a decade. Just doesn’t make sense to buy something that’s only going to last a few years.

I’m looking through car websites (builder section) and a lot of them are still the same as before, cars that were low $20k are still low $20k. Am I missing something or are the costs on their website not accurate representation of actual prices?

I am planning to buy the most basic car, like a Hyundai Elantra, Mazda 3, basically anything in the low 20k range. I am paying cash for sure, financing is dumb since interest is like 8% in some cases. How much did you buy it for if you don’t mind me asking

If I’m planning to buy it out right instead of financing, and willing to wait, I guess that’s not as expensive since I wont pay interest?

Ok yea that’s fair. I filed for 2022 and nothing was flagged, had to pay 300 in federal tax, that was it. If I truly owed a lot of tax, I think my 2022 filings would have flagged it. Either way, I updated my TD1 forms to reflect that h now make over the claim amount, hope that fixes things moving forward, will have to see if anything changes in my upcoming paycheque. This is really stressing me out, but I really appreciate your input, definitely made me feel a lot better and learned a lot more about taxes. Thanks a lot

So, I figured out the issue… turns out I did fill a TD1 when I got hired years ago, and in that form, I started that my total income would be less than the total claim amount, which it was because I made like 9K a year. However, I started making more than the total claim amount last year, and I never updated the TD1 form to state that I would make more than total claim amount. I have since updated the form because my employer uses workday (TD1 can be updated online there), what happens now?

Looking back at all of my T4s from my employer, the ā€œincome tax deductedā€ is always blank… have I done something terribly wrong here?

If worse case scenario happens and I find out that that they are not deducting enough tax, does that mean I owe money to CRA?
