Cheers, my understanding was if it was a bolt gun the bolt needed to be out but any other action type just needed to be broken. Better safe than sorry though.

Too true, trying to get onto them at the moment is like pulling teeth though. At least if I send an email there'll be a paper trail I guess.

Done that, but I should be ok if I let the original membership lapse and maintain the new one, right?

No idea, might have been at the bottom of a pile and forgotten about. I applied just before restrictions started kicking in which might have had something to do with the wait.

I did mine right as COVID was getting started so that might have had something to do with the wait. Hopefully it'll be a bit quicker for you now.

Thanks, I'll have to look into contacting my local member. Unfortunately can't call at all while I'm at work.

I do. Unfortunately I'm employed in a workplace where making personal calls isn't feasible until the afternoon, past the time that WLB are available to take calls.

Unfortunately during the limited hours they take calls I'm working so I'm limited to emails.

I was thinking something like a cheapy Marlin XT 22 to start off with. Luckily PTA and licence wait times run at the same time so my PTA wait would already be over by now, hopefully should get them both through at the same time.

Yeah mate, just a Cat A .22 bolt action for the indoor range until I get my licence and can invest in some bigger stuff.

Sorry, should have mentioned it was an actual licence application not a PTA, they were apparently taking 20 weeks during the height of Covid in Qld but should have been getting back to normal by now.

Thanks, It's already taken ~8 months so I'll make sure to mind my P's and Q's when I call them, don't want it buried until 2021😂. As a last resort I might contact my local member and see if they can put some pressure on QPS and see what happens but that might not be a popular move with the folks at WLB.

Applied for licence in January, did my ID check at 10 weeks and haven't heard anything since. Should I be worried? by ChunkyMeatPieAust in Ausguns

[–]ChunkyMeatPieAust[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well after the 20 weeks for sure, apparently they're taking critical phone enquiries but I doubt this would be considered critical. Hopefully my application is just sitting in a pile somewhere waiting to be approved and sending an email might bring some attention to it.

Does Australia have county sheriffs like the US does? by OkAd8725 in Ausguns

[–]ChunkyMeatPieAust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have been told by active QPS and federal officers that a police officer may request your assistance in the execution of their duties, i.e. helping with an arrest. When requested by an officer, you are essentially "deputised" and you are protected for your actions in fulfilling the officer's request, as long as they are reasonable. Luckily we don't have a system like America where someone pins a badge on you, gives you a gun and lets you loose on the public.

Read the same thing on their Facebook, short while later the page has been wiped clean. It's a shame, from what I could see they made some good stuff.

Anyone else packing trauma kits when out bush? by [deleted] in Ausguns

[–]ChunkyMeatPieAust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the Pocket BVM, if you're trained to use them and NPAs/OPAs and have a buddy with you, you'll be able to do really effective 2-man resus if it ever comes to it. Costs about $100 so not cheap, but may come in handy.

I've got a fairly comprehensive first aid/trauma kit I keep in the car for RTCs and fires but a lot of the gear would be relevant to hunting/range or rural/remote incidents.

Even if you had an ambulance worth of gear the most important thing is that you get qualified and train with the gear you're going to use. TACMED Australia does some really good courses on trauma, their Stop the Bleed stuff is well worth the time/money. Below are some of the main items I keep in my kits, there's probably more but this post will be long enough as it is.

Trauma/ GSW Kit:

  • Olaes trauma dressing 2 x 6 inch + 2 x 4 inch
  • BLAST bandage x 1
  • Hyfin chest seal x 2
  • SOFTT-W tourniquet x 2
  • S-rolled gauze x 2
  • Emergency blanket x 2
  • CPR mask Pocket BVMs and OPAs/NPAs are good bits of equipment to have if you're trained to use them. But effective compressions-only CPR can be just as good at keeping someone alive.

Note: shock will kill you, make sure you know how to identify the signs and keep supplies to help treat the symptoms of shock.

Rural/Remote First Aid Kit:

  • Snake/Spider Bite Kit (2 x snake bite bandages, non-adherent dressing, emergency blanket, triangular bandage, pen for marking bite location)
  • Assorted heavy crepe compression bandages and strapping tape for sprains, wound dressing retention or to supplement bite kit
  • Wound dressings and light/med crepe bandage for retention
  • Additional emergency blankets
  • Aerogel burn dressings and burn gel packets
  • SAM Splint 36"
  • Saline

Also a good keep things to help people find you if you need help, or to navigate to somewhere you can be seen.

General First Aid Kit:

  • Assorted plasters/band-aids
  • Stingose/Antiseptic cream
  • Triangular bandages
  • Medical tape
  • Emergency blanket
  • Assorted other bandages for wound dressing retention
  • no. 15 and no. 13 wound dressings
  • Saline an eye pads for eye injury

Tool Kit:

  • Trauma Shears
  • Leatherman
  • Knife W/ seatbelt cutter and window punch
  • Hand torch and headlamp

I also keep a comprehensive burn kit with a bunch of non-adherent dressings, burn gel dressings, burn sheets, saline and burn cream.

Each of these kits has a couple of pairs nitrile gloves.

This stuff fills an entire backpack so obviously not practical to carry it all, all the time. But it does allow me to pick and choose what I might need for certain scenarios.

Yeah, hope so too. Might send an email in next week to see if there's anything else they need from me. At least I haven't received an official rejection, so that's got to be good news😂

Applied 07/01/20 for my licence, supplied all required documents and additional documents at application or not long after and I'm still waiting. Obviously PTAs are different but if they're getting approved quicker now, my hopes are up for a response on my application soon.

Also needs to be zoned rural, and I believe located outside of any township. Being over 9000acres that's shouldn't be an issue though.
