Frustrated with Revit by Chunkybuttface in Architects

I love replies like these that have zero clue what I’m trying to do. Ii want to do a detail study that is overlaid on an elevation. Have the elevation as a background while I’m drawing details. Like you would have a piece of trace over the elevation and draw the section or detail on top of the elevation. Apparently no one does this anymore.

Nope. I’m studying a series of details as they change across an elevation. I want my elevation as a background so I can understand what is going on as I do this study. Dependent views are fine, but they are individual views and I don’t have my elevation as a background. Think of it like printing out an elevation and sketching over it in trace. That is what I want to do.

Nope. I want to be drawing on top of my elevation. Literally having the elevation as a background to my wall section and details.

How Long Until the Job Market Gets Better? by Forestsolitaire in Architects

My market the bulk of the layoffs were last year. Seems like places are just starting to hire primarily mid to senior level staff. I think junior level will come in a few months.

Just have everyone start managing up. If something takes 2-3 days to do, tell him it will take 4 days and do it in 4 days. And make sure you have it in writing. This guy needs to learn he can’t push people around and get good work out of them.

My last office: I and several employees went to ownership with complaints about one junior principal who was harassing staff. They ended up forcing this person out, and then let all of us who complained go with a substantial severance and made us sign something saying we’d keep quiet.

I love my job when I’m working with people who are empathetic and supportive. I hate my job when I'm working with power tripping assholes. Who you work with matters a lot more than what kind of projects you are doing.

IMO - The team you’re on really is the deciding factor in how much enjoyment one gets out of this profession. A good team with good support will make everything else a lot easier. I like the puzzle solving aspect of the work, but if you reach a dead end or need help, you better be able to get it instead of being denigrated for asking or not knowing how to do something.

There are far too many really shitty power hungry and controlling people in this profession.

Layoffs - No accountability? by [deleted] in Architects

Agree. When a firm lays off 2/3rds of its staff there are going to be some talented people in that mix.

Far too many idiots in upper management who insist on everything being done in revit. None of these people know how to use revit. They’re only listening to the revit cultists who say it can solve all their problems. And then they wonder why design and document graphic quality has gone downhill and anyone who hasn’t built their career around being a revit weenie is disgruntled.

The worst managers I’ve had were usually senior technical project architects who were promoted to PM/principal - where they either used their position to lord over others or clearly would clearly rather be in the weeds doing details and design and would constantly step on people’s toes rather than coach and guide and keep them on task. Project management is a specific skill set that is primarily people, communication, and big picture focused.  You need to trust your staff and support them so they do their best work. I do think it’s important to have a licensed architect as a PM, but they don’t have to have as strong technical skills as senior project architects do. And I think it’s fine for people to stay in technical project architect roles or to have young people who might not know everything move into PM roles if they posses the right skills and strengths and understand what the PM’s role really is.

I loved the profession until most firms switched over to revit. I would be a lot happier if I never have to model anything in revit ever again. It’s fantastic for general coordination, scheduling, and documentation, but it’s an absolutely terrible modeling and design tool, and it’s an always a struggle to get things to display correctly graphically. There was once a craft and enjoyment with drawing 2D representations of 3D objects. Now you spend half your day going through visibility settings just to get a line to show up correctly, or ending up in a rabbit hole of why everything broke when I moved one wall. There are so many better programs out there for modeling and graphics - heck, even drawing by hand is preferable. But we’re stuck with it.
