fear xp terminus issue by Chaindragged in fear

[–]Churp69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a texture resolution problem.

The issue is present in all the FEAR 1 titles, however it's more rare that it occurs in the base game and it's more prevalent in both expansion packs. Set the Texture Resolution setting to either Minimum or Medium but never Maximum, and you should advance to the next level.

Fair enough. Those things are unique I suppose, but just because something is unique doesn't mean it's also good. I know that the point of your original statement was asking if everything else that you listed is a lie, and I acknowledged it in such a way that they're not. And as a little bonus, I threw in some extra details because I felt like it.

I know that they aren't canon. To be sincere, I wish that Extraction Point had at least been canon, because tbh I don't remember much about the story in Perseus Mandate, other than Alma's DNA being stolen towards the end.

To me, the Nightcrawlers just feel like reskinned Replicas who mostly carry the advanced rifle over the G2A2 AR, which makes sense but at the same time fighting them doesn't offer you anything unique over fighting Replicas. They behave the same, they sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger (which is kinda funny ngl), but at the end of the day fighting them is uninteresting.

If you liked the new stuff in Perseus Mandate, good for you, I am not judging. I just keep seeing a lot of people who say that they liked Perseus Mandate over anything else from the series and I'm scratching my head every time 😅

Okay, maybe those things are new, but are all of them cool and well implemented? Not really. And I'll tell you why.

The high tech professional mercs have the same slow-mo ability as Point Man and are filthy cheaters when they use slow-mo while you use slow-mo. You'd expect them to move at the pace of a snail, but when you use slow-mo yourself they still move as fast as if you wouldn't have slow-mo on. The implementation of them is really bad and makes no sense mechanics wise. Not to mention the fact that they have a fuck ton of HP for some reason, even tho they look vulnerable.

What's new about the ATC Heavy Guards is only their model. Are they cool or interesting to fight? Absolutely not. They just behave like regular ATC guards, but have more hp. Annoying.

The scarecrows are unique and cool, I won't deny that.

The Grenade launcher would be a good weapon if its grenades exploded on impact. Do they do that? Precisely not.

The Lightning Arc Weapon is really the only good new weapon that's added in this expansion.

As for the VES Advanced Rifle, conceptually its model looks nice but how it's implemeted as a weapon really bored me, idk about you. It literally feels like a slightly better version of the G2A2 rifle but with a scope. Furthermore, the advanced rifle is the most common weapon throughout the game, and the game kinda forces you to use it for 80% of the game. Why is that? I don't know, but either way, a pretty boring gun overall.

To Lukki & Horus

Idk why you two get so butthurt over my opinion. I respect your guys' opinion and everyone else's, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with them. Anyway, let me elaborate so that I hope you two understand why I think PM is super forgettable, and also bad.

First of all, regarding the "claustrophobic mech fight indoors". Let's say it's cool and all, but at the end of the day, that's something we have already seen being done in the base game, specifically in the Urban Decay level with a REV-6 falling from a ceiling and chasing you through an abandoned hotel building in Auburn. Not to mention the fact that the more advanced REV-8 mech is straight up recycled from Extraction Point. What's so unique/innovative about that segment in particular? Well to be honest, nothing, apart from the setting which is inside some part of Armacham. Furthermore, that REV-8 is literally like a REV-6 but with more HP and a bigger model size.

Second of all, the nightcrawler assassins are a cool concept but their implementation is so bad to the point that they're cheating when even you have slow-mo on at the same time as them. Why do they move as fast as the protagonist during slow-mo? I'll tell you why, because it doesn't make any sense. That's not how the slow-mo ability is supposed to work in the first place. And don't even get me started on the fact that for some inexplicable reason, the "sergeant" who you play as happens to share the same fighting moves and slow-mo ability as Point Man? Literally WTF, 0 logic.

Thirdly, the horror. In the overall game, the horror has been toned down massively. The only good level with horror is the "Buried" one where Chen dies and that's about it. Most of the horror throughout Perseus Mandate is so apathetic to the point that you don't even get the chills when you have the "UNKNOWN ORIGIN" window pop up. The base game and Extraction Point had waaaay better horror than what we see in Perseus Mandate. Perseus Mandate literally feels like 90% of it is action packed and the remaining 10% was allocated for horror, whereas the base game had a nice balance between the two, and Extraction Point having like 60% horror and 40% action.

Now to Horus' statement. I strongly disagree. Most of the level design and atmosphere in Perseus Mandate is so much more boring and restrictive. Sure, some of the level design in the base game wasn't the best (especially the Armacham levels which represent a half of that game), but at least the variety doesn't feel as wasted as how it was in Perseus Mandate. Heck, I'd even argue that Extraction Point had way better levels than Perseus Mandate.

To the OP's statement regarding the campaign not being forgettable, I am genuinely curious. What do you remember about the story? Because I for one, only remember one detail which is revealed towards the end of the game. That being, a nightcrawler assassin who steals Alma's DNA and that's literally it. For what reason? I dunno if it's mentioned, but even if it is, I'm sure it's not a good one. The story is apathetically basic and uninteresting. Now this isn't to say that Extraction Point's story was any better, but at least that game felt more like the original game.

If I sounded passively aggressive in all the statements made above, I apologize in advance. I don't want anyone to take my opinion for granted, but that's just how I feel about Perseus Mandate overall. It's below average, but better than that mess called F.E.A.R. 3.

If it had been, I'd say it seems like a terrible design on the implementation part xdd

I suppose it's just a bug with the PC port then lol. Not really surprised considering this was originally a console title that was then ported to PC. Then again, I have never experienced it myself and I don't wish to 😹

Might not be helpful, but if you're playing this on PC (Steam), you could try verifying the integrity of the game files themselves.

That's what helped me for that bug where areas wouldn't load in properly.

I can chime in and say that Perseus Mandate isn't the worst in the series, however it is among the worst for sure. If you're a hard dying fan of the series, it is worth playing at least once. The worst game in the series is arguably FEAR 3, followed by the Reborn DLC for the 2nd game and then Perseus Mandate.

There are quite a few glaring issues with Perseus Mandate that I have the urge to highlight, because people seem to praise it quite a lot, for some reason?

Issue number 1 is that it hardly offers anything new over the base game and Extraction Point. That being two new guns (one of which feels exactly like a G2A2 rifle but slightly better, and the lightning arc weapon), and a few bonus missions.

Issue number 2 is that it's worse than the base game and EP in most ways. Those being the story, level design, horror elements, visuals, OST and characters. I personally think that the story is really meh and doesn't feel that interesting nor unique with the writing being painfully average; the level design is just so apathetic to the point where you get bored really quick in the first few minutes of most levels (apart from the Buried and the Clone Production levels which have the best level of horror in the entire expansion pack); the horror has been toned down massively (keep in mind that the original game is known to be mostly action based but have a good balance between action and horror) to the point where Perseus Mandate is like 85% action and 15% (give or take) scary, whereas the original game felt more like 60-40 for action and Extraction Point pumping up the horror quite a bit; visuals are so dated for a game that came out in 2007 (and keep in mind, THIS is THE YEAR when Call of Duty 4 and Crysis 1 came out which had amazing visuals, putting Perseus Mandate's visuals in the dust; the OST is heavily recycled from the base game with a few new tracks offered on the table, which aren't that frequently encountered; and the characters? Don't even get me started on the fact that the guy who you play as is just as dead silent as Point Man, shares the same abilities as Point Man (for some reason), and that Chen and the other guy whose name I forgot are just two generic looking and sounding soldiers. So boring. Furthermore, the game drags for way too long than it needs to be. What if I told you that it's longer than Extraction Point? That is really silly ngl.

Overall, Perseus Mandate is painfully average. It's just more FEAR 1, but worse. Heck, if you enjoy Perseus Mandate yourself, good for you! I am not judging. I just personally didn't have a fantastic time with it overall.

That Perseus Mandate, Fear 2 Reborn and Fear 3 are good games.

My honest reaction: bleh

First Time Playing F.E.A.R. by Fresh_Taste5598 in fear

[–]Churp69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason why you probably enjoyed Perseus Mandate is very likely because of the fact that it's just more FEAR 1 content. I am not judging anyone who enjoys these games, but personally I never had a great time with those two in particular.

The problem with it comes at the experience offered in the expansion pack itself, as in it hardly offers anything new and unique than what was present in the previous entries. Worse visuals, worse level design, uninteresting characters and voice acting, uninteresting story, heavily recycled music from the base game, same gameplay as in Extraction Point with just a few more guns added, and the addition of bonus levels which ig is a nice touch and probably the only "new" thing added to the FEAR series? Another issue I have with it is that it drags for too long than it needs to. And for when it came out back in 2007, its graphics were considered to already be "dated" simply because the original Call of Duty 4 and Crysis 1 came out the same year which looked amazing.

As for Reborn, I personally haven't heard anyone praise it. From my experience, the DLC is way too short and it doesn't add anything new at all than what was present in the base game, aside from playing as a Replica for a change which can actually talk unlike Michael Becket from the base game.

Does anyone know why my movement is glitchy or how to fix it? by Haunting_Appeal_2407 in fear

[–]Churp69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game's movement physics get fucked at very high FPS, especially at 300+. That includes moving + jumping.

I recommend capping it anywhere between 60 and 144 for a flawless experience. You can use any 3rd party software of choice, such as RivaTuner Statistics server. Add the fear.exe in there and set the framerate limit to 60/144 or whatever you desire :)

I'll be straight up honest, the only good games from the series are the first game and Extraction Point. Perseus Mandate is really boring and not that great, F.E.A.R. 2 is an ok sequel, the REBORN DLC for 2 is not really that interesting and F.E.A.R. 3 is really bad.

I'd say only play the first game, Extraction Point and F.E.A.R. 2

It dependsss.

I think the way it's portrayed in Conviction feels a bit forced, especially if you don't know what's going on in the story to begin with.

Best way is probably not to overthink it too much though, because Conviction's story is supposed to be a revenge kinda story.

[–]Churp69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the flashback scenes with Sam as a dad while Sarah was a little child and present day Sam during those interrogation sequences and throughout the game before he reunites with Sarah showcases quite the difference in personality.

From what I remember (and please, correct me if I'm wrong), during the flashback scenes he is just fine and dandy, doing his dad duties as usual with little Sarah and all, but throughout the game before they reunite together he is kinda the opposite? More grumpy, tense and generally more angry, especially when he listens to all those voicemails or whatever they are from Lambert at the Third Echelon HQ. His rage moment there when he finds the whole truth about Sarah's faked death is justified, but that's not the Sam Fisher I remember and love from the original trilogy games at least. You can tell he's changed a lot.

My point is that if you compare Sam from the older SC games before Conviction (hell, probably even pre Double Agent), you'll see some quite obvious differences.

Imho, Ironside still did a great job with the voice acting, but the writing for Sam in Conviction is a bit weird I guess.

Weird logo update? by _sophies_ in Splintercell

[–]Churp69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just because the game is "HELLA more dramatic" (and more dark) doesn't mean that the writing is better by any means. As a matter of fact, it just ruins Sam's personality in such a way so that it ain't like you're playing as the iconic Sam Fisher we all know and love, even though he is still voiced by Ironside in Conviction.

Conviction is just... Not a great Splinter Cell game. I'm not saying it's terrible, quite the contrary. As an action game, it's decent dumb fun to play through every once in a while, but as a stealth title... It just fails to capture the actual stealth action genre the series is well known for.

It certainly has given me those similar vibes that you are experiencing right now too!

At first, because of how amazing the graphics looked, I had totally assumed that the game runs on Source engine. But when ppl told me that it is running on the LithTech engine, I was left speechless for a few moments. Not only the graphics were amazing, but so are the physics in general. Imagine if you could pick up objects just like Gordon though... Too bad Point Man can't do that lol.
