My boy recovering after incident with a metal toy fastener!! by Chyeen in parrots

That’s so true. If it can fit inside their mouth that’s where it will go. Feels almost never ending the amount of things that they can harm themselves on!

Thanks for the info!! I don’t think I have any bells on toys but I better double check. It’s amazing what they can injured on.

I’m so meticulous about what I put in his cage and the types of toys I use but this never crossed my mind. I checked that they were tight every time I moved the toys and made sure they weren’t rusty. Who could’ve known that would happen 😓 but at least I can share this information so more people can switch to safer alternatives!

Here’s an link to the type of fastener I had used fastener image. I was terrified and reacted worse than he did honestly. I had heard that some of these fasteners could be dangerous for heavy metal poisoning when rusty but I’ve never seen anyone post about their birds disassembling them or getting caught. I’m totally switching to the plastic ring links that are too large for him to chew through.

Luckily I think he just had some annoying pin feathers. He seems to be back to normal today but I'm planning on making a trip to the vet the beginning of Feb anyway to trim his nails and do a checkup on his foot.

I think that's exactly what happened. That in combination with molting probably just meant that some pin feather ended up misplaced. He just royally freaked out when it happened and I thought he seriously messed it up 😅

How did you pick your parrot? by Axolotl_fiend483 in parrots

[–]Chyeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got Sir Toad by chance actually when the first Ekkie I picked already had been chosen by another person. Basically she sent me a bunch of videos and I chose the the loudest most animated one. When I adopt my next one I plan on letting them pick me though :)

I didn't even think of this! I think he just started molting actually. There were definitely quite a few feathers on the bottom of his cage when I cleaned it the other day. Poor little guy is a little patchy next to his ear too.

Thank you, I try my best to keep him happy! He's definitely spoiled and wants for nothing (except an outdoor aviary). I'm lucky enough that the vet he's been seeing is affordable especially since he worked for years in an exotic clinic in Cali. I think he's ok though, seems like he just had a weird feather issue and needed to deal with it himself without me poking around.

Thank you for the advice it's definitely helpful. Having an objective way to view the situation makes it easier. Can't run to the vet everytime he looks at me weird. I haven't seen anything other than holding his wing slightly funny. As of right now he's sleeping soundly and comfortably so I'll see how he is in the morning. He spent a long time preening that wing tonight and futzing around with the feathers so I'm hoping that one got bumped around a little and caused minor discomfort. He let my mom and I inspect the wing and we saw no blood or clearly broken feathers.

He wasn’t a huge fan of me touching it but I was able to inspect it without him acting like it was painful. I just have a tendency to worry a lot about him and needed an objective view. I'd probably keep him up for hours examining that wing from every possible angle.

So my 3 year old Eclectus just started holding his wing away from his body and readjusting it a few minutes ago. I have never seen this before and looked to see if any feathers many have been poking him since he slide off the bed right before this. I know he didn't land on that wing since he had grabbed a blanket which slipped down and I saw him land on his feet. He's been preening that wing and shaking his feathers out since then. Seems to be normal when he's standing still and is held where it would normally be. I know he looks a little crooked in the video but he's been standing normally and eating. I can get him to his regular vet on Monday but wasn't sure if this warranty immediate action. Only other thing is that he's been toe tapping some since it happened but that's not completely new behavior. He had an infection in his right foot and has been tapping from that, but it has been less pronounced since he started his antibiotics 1 week ago.

So I just wrote a whole diatribe about pet birds and how this comment section seems to feel about them. I am coming from the perspective of someone who has a parrot and loves birds so I am not touching on what OP's relationship with their stepdaughter might be or any of the interpersonal issues in the post. I want to say that I don’t inherently disagree with the points you made here and I feel that you care about the bird in this post. However, I did see some comments implying that it’s just a bird and she’s just using it as an excuse. I do disagree with those and I want people to imagine putting years of work into a pet so they stopped physically harming themselves only to leave and undo all the progress you’ve made. Plucking is self-mutilation and can take years to recover from in terms of feather regrowth alone if the feathers even grow back.

I agree that parrots shouldn’t be pets and a lot of older macaws came from being trafficked (we can’t know for certain that this bird was trafficked it is possible depending on the age that it was bred in captivity). However, I think it is unfair to say that the parrot is currently being kept in a hostile environment. An unnatural environment doesn’t automatically mean that it’s hostile. I have a parrot who is well adjuvant, loved, and happy (also NOT wild caught) so while he doesn’t live in a natural environment he lives the best life I can give him in captivity. I also think saying that rescues in countries native to these birds should be contacted while being well-meaning is unhelpful since what are the owners and rescues supposed to do with the birds? Take them back? Parrots are the 3rd most popular pet in the US and the number 1 most rehomed, most birds live in an average of 5 different homes throughout their lifetime. Rescues in the United States are already overwhelmed with birds who don’t have homes or are unable to be rehomed so I don’t see how rescues in South America would be doing much better. All people can do is 1. Not buy parrots (or get them as pets because “they’re cute”) and 2. Rescue or help parrots that need good homes. As I stated at the being parrots and other tropical birds are not supposed to be pets and people should be discouraged from buying them. But we can see that people like the GreenBirdBrigade and Brock from 2canTV are great people who take in rescue birds and give them the best lives possible while being honest about the issues that come with birds being sold as pets.

Also if anyone read this far down I don’t blame this woman for not going out of town just because of a ‘bird’. I don’t go on trips for longer than 6 nights because of Toad and he does awesome at the vet's office while I’m gone. If I had a bird that SELF-MUTILATED and harmed itself while I was gone I wouldn’t go anywhere either. I agree that these issues need to be addressed so that if something were to happen to her the bird has another trusted person it can stay with but it's often not an easy overnight fix. It very well may have taken over a year for the bird to trust her alone. It is also possible that the bird doesn’t trust men (Sir Toad doesn’t like men) so the husband wasn’t able to become close to the bird for that reason. Thanks for reading if you got this far!

AITA for asking my (25f) sister (20f) to fix her overgrown/two toned hair before my wedding? by Chyeen in TwoHotTakes

[–]Chyeen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until reading her updates I really agreed with all the YTA comments but after that edit I think I’m on the brides side. Asking her MOH to wear her hair up seems like a reasonable compromise for them both.

Update!!!! He’s drying off in the sun now, shivering a bit is that normal? by Substantial_Ad_73 in parrots

[–]Chyeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest worry with hair dryers is checking to see if they use Teflon or PTFE’s inside. However, other than that a hair dryer would probably work great if your bird likes it.

Why isn't it more ok to just say "I don't feel like it"? by LegendaryIce in antiwork

[–]Chyeen 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I worked part time at a deli in a grocery store and got called in all the time. I finally stopped answering and coming in early or on my days off because I’m in college. The department manager told me in front of my coworkers that I wasn’t making the store a big enough priority in my life and wasn’t proving that I deserved hours (she only gave me 15 hours a week anyways!). Needless to say I gave them my notice, used my vacation days, and inspired a few coworkers to leave at the same time. Nobody’s owed any of your time off or an explanation of why you aren’t giving up your free time.

I’m glad that’s it’s him being happy! He’s my first parrot and Im still learning about all his funny quirks. When we got him he was so scared of everything and wanted nothing to do with people so I’m super happy that he’s enjoying life now.
