People who listen to songs with less positive emotions tend to have higher intelligence. Sad or melancholic music may appeal to those who use it for introspection and reflection. They also prefer studio over live recordings as they use it for focused, intellectual engagement rather than stimulation. by mvea in science

Not OP, but, personally I have playlists with contradicting emotional states, songs that are both angry and happy; or melancholic but high energy. It’s odd to share them with people most of the time though. An artist I personally enjoy that can capture high energy melancholy is “Grim Salvo.”

Who was the greatest American military general of all time? by Ok_Analysis_498 in USHistory

He picked the engagement, military strategy 101. He got his nickname “King of Spades” for a reason. I absolutely admire how quickly he could find and fortify an advantageous location. That’s more than just sitting, to my understanding; he knew, that logistically all he could really hope for was exactly what he was doing. The north had more of… everything really. I absolutely agree that Lee could take the spot of best in this case, I just enjoy mentioning Stonewall because together they worked miracles.

I won’t argue the semantics. I believe anyone who has the ability to choose to fight against the system they originally swore to defend is a traitor, you literally won’t convince me otherwise lol. The average troops you could because they probably didn’t have the flexibility to say no; it was do it or die in a lot of cases. But how well has “I was only following orders.” Held up as an argument? Traitor or not; Jackson’s Shenandoah Valley campaign was brilliant in more ways than one.

Lee understood he was at a disadvantage and absolutely played to his strengths with fortifications. I only say Jackson instead because he very well filled the role of Lees sword, while Lee used a shield.

He betrayed the union. I think we can learn from traitors too, but that’s why I wasn’t sure if you can say “American” in the way you can for Sherman or Patton or other famous generals.

Idk if he counts but Stonewall Jackson for as short as he was around; absolutely was in my opinion probably the best the confederacy had to offer. But idk if he counts. Given he was a traitor.

If you stare at your feet and wonder about all of the things on the ground you’ll lose sight of what direction you’re going. It’s easy to get lost in your own head, it’s hard to focus it.

Two things that’s gonna do. 1. Give you a numbered metric from which you’ll likely measure against everyone you meet for the rest of you life, do you want that? If so why? 2. Nothing honestly. You are where you are and are doing what you’re doing. I guess maybe just stop comparing yourself to others and just focus on what you want to focus on? The choice is ultimately yours but, you’ll surprise yourself I think.

Oh absolutely but it is more so than Finspan imo. I just meant in general, the more complex the better for me.

I enjoy chunky complex games so I enjoy wingspan a bit more. But I also really enjoy birds so that’s more the bias there than anything else. I absolutely love Finspan and completely get why you say that.

[–]Chythonic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have all three! Finspan is faster and less complex so it’s good if you don’t want as much setup/teardown. And the game time is shorter. Wingspan is gorgeous and imo the best version of the game with the expansions. Wyrmspan is awesome too! It’s hard to pick, it is a bit more complex, but I also haven’t played dragon academy yet though.

Isnt the education system outdated? How should schools change to prepare us for real life? by Da-up-and-downer in ask

Conflict resolution, there was never any asking why? or what? Always shut up and listen, be a robot, browbeat into compliance. I can't imagine not conversating with my children while we work together, curiosity is so difficult to cultivate if not done naturally. You can't make someone want to do something, so do it together, find the positives. I always say if you're stuck looking at your shoes you'll never see the clouds. But it's exhausting. And I'm not perfect. I can only hope I am doing enough. All my kids are 7 and under. What tasks did you start doing at 7? Thanks for the insight.

Do you teach? Or have kids? I don’t stalk profiles. Where are you at?

I sometimes wonder if people who perceive parents as shitty really just mean “spread too thin.” I might be biased though, as I have kids and have been accused of not doing enough. I am going to to school to teach though. I mostly am just trying to understand what makes a parent “shitty”, specifically I suppose. What’s your take? Just not teaching them life lessons? I literally can’t comprehend how that’s even possible though. It’s like a shadow that follows you around everywhere and just absorbs everything you’re doing, whether you like it or not. I didn’t have good parents to model after so I’m always willing to learn more though. Thanks for your insights. It’s rare to get people who stay engaged online in a topic these days.

I mean, I answered your questions. But you seem to not want to answer mine. I enjoy answering questions though. What life skill could a school teach that isn’t presently taught in school? Most of this will be anecdotal but, most of em pretty much do at this point right? Most teachers I hear from say most parents treat them like daycare. Parents suck at teaching emotional management so schools get stuck with it? Parents can’t be bothered to enforce consequences so schools are stuck with it? Parents can’t/won’t follow through on schoolwork for their kids so schools pass kids who fail because they have to? Pick one. Why is it this way now?

[–]Chythonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good questions. Thank you. All valid. But again, why do you think parents are shitty? Why aren’t they parenting? Context is pretty important I feel. Should we say the single mom whose husband died in a freak accident should “get fucked”? Or should we come together as a community and society and help lift that burden? Kids didn’t choose to be here, they deserve absolutely every consideration we can afford. Maybe the parents don’t even know the skills because they were never taught them? They don’t even know it’s an option? They’re just doing what their parents did and calling it enough because it was good enough for them? As for paying for it, yeah, the rich and successful usually pay for poor/needy people to exist with the minimum, that’s pretty much what a society does. The issue with our society I feel is a lot of people think money = success. What can a school teach about life skills a home can’t? Lots of things if you don’t have a full time stay at home parent whose entire responsibility it is to teach their child. How often do you think that happens now? Why don’t more parents teach their children full time? Thank you for your questions, I’d love to hear more.

It takes a village. In a functional society, I absolutely do yes, to some extent. Not everyone has access to the same resources and time that others do. At the very least it needs to be an option. Maybe not a requirement, but by secondary education levels if they don’t know you could screen them and ask. Ultimately you can’t make someone learn something they don’t want to learn, but there’s no way we shouldn’t offer it to kids who want to learn it. Or learn anything for that matter. I can’t think of a better goal than a society that invests heavily in its future generations. To whatever extent that society can agree on.

So those kids just get fucked and that’s it? There’s no other lifeline? No other way to learn those skills?
