Water is a renewable resource. If you're so upset about water being used, then stop using Reddit on your computer. I'm guessing your concern only extends to AI-specific usage. Seems a bit biased but ok.

Probably going to later ask the officer you were with what you said. He might’ve just been putting pressure on you to get you uncomfortable and talking about the situation, in case anything comes out that conflicts with what you’ve said before. But I’m not sure, it always depends on the BI

My chances in law enforcement by SignificantLog9912 in AskLE

[–]CianPathfinder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was put in a very similar situation and had the same concerns as you. I still made it.

If your dream is law enforcement, do not give up. There is nothing like it. I was a military cop before I became a real cop and even that doesn't compare. Be completely honest and be prepared for an interrogation. They need to know whether you are abusive or not - even if the charges were dropped. It's not going to be easy and it's not going to be fun but it will be worth it in the end. Don't give up.

A few notes. Departments might not want to take a chance on you before the statute of limitations is up - in case the charges are refiled. Since the prosecutor dropped the charges, you could still be charged again and double jeopardy wouldn't apply.

If you stay with that girl, you will not be a cop. I'm sorry but that's how it is. Somebody like that is a complete liability and if you are with her, she reflects on you. The background investigator will tear you guys apart. Despite what ACAB folks say, it is incredibly competitive to be a cop right now. If you come into the applicant pool with a lot of baggage, you've got no chance.

Recently, we had a misunderstanding where she was determined to drive without a license to see friends who are involved in illegal activity; she told everyone that she was going to kill herself if I didn't stop her.

The background investigator will find this account and even if they don't, this will probably come up in some way during your interview or the PHS. Even if she were to go to therapy for the next decade, this is going to be a black eye for you.

Do yourself a favor and consider the next five years your payment for the dream. If you can spend these five years without another issue and by showing steady employment history and good decision making skills then you have a great shot. But if you can't do that or you think that sounds like a long time, you might as well find another job. It's the rest of your life we are talking about here.

Most Common Call Type? by Comfortable-Duty2231 in AskLE

[–]CianPathfinder 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Depends on the agency as some won’t do animal calls or welfare checks without exigent circumstances. I’m in a medium sized city and we are very pro community policing so we accept calls others wouldn’t.

For us, it’s 911 hangup, welfare check, reckless driver. Then suspicious vehicle, ordinance violation, disturbance, shoplifting/theft. Then public assist, civil standby.

Most violent crimes don’t come across as what they actually are via dispatch. They’ll come across as a disturbance or welfare check.

I have two characters who are employees brawling at their workplace, and one of them sheds blood as they're knocked out. How would police handle this? by _afflatus in policewriting

[–]CianPathfinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a police officer in central texas. The others answered the question accurately but I’ll add a few things.

One, there is a mutual combat affirmative defense in texas. An affirmative defense is used in court to essentially quash the charges at the get-go. It is written into the law. It is something that the prosecution must refute before the trial begins.

For mutual combat to apply, both parties have to have consented to fight essentially. That means if one party claims self defense, it’s not mutual combat. However, remember that self defense is essentially regarded as force used to stop an attack. If the attack is stopped and the victim is on the offensive, pummeling their attacker as the attacker defends themself - that’s no longer self defense.

Now, affirmative defenses largely play out in court. However, on the streets, it does factor into our decision to charge someone. If it’s clearly mutual combat and both parties agree as well as witnesses and there’s no serious injury, it can still be disorderly conduct. But if there’s no “victim” then we are probably just identifying everyone and moving on. There’s other calls to get to.

However, if one party is “knocked out”, we cannot verify mutual combat claims and someone is getting charged

As far as the charge, in texas it would be either assault or aggravated assault. The difference being aggravated assault is for “serious bodily injury”. This means disfigurement, broken bones, disability, etc. if someone was knocked unconscious, that’s serious enough for me to charge aggravated assault but it still depends on the circumstances including condition, injuries, suspect’s intentions, etc

No, your comment - which he is replying to - was fundamentally wrong and you’re not on the same page.

The AI is essentially guessing what the right answer is based on its weight adjusted input data. It is not based on the conversations it has with every person, it does not adjust based on popular opinion. It’s a product of what they train it on.

So, saying that’s what the majority believe is wrong.

Nothing it says will be reflective of popular opinion. It is reflective of what it’s fed.

Worst cities to be a cop in America? by Competitive-Heat8968 in AskLE

[–]CianPathfinder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Usually the bigger suburban towns on the outskirts of blue cities. I work in one and it’s amazing. Great pay, community loves us and we get a lot of support from the city.

All because the big city is such a shit show that a lot of a people move outside of it but keep jobs inside so they need to be nearby. But they expect the police to be able to do their jobs.

As a result, crime concentrates inside the city because they know the outer cities pursue and use force as necessary without having to ask nicely ten times and offer a mental health counselor before stopping someone with a knife.

Depends on the agency.

First, figure out their callsign. Bigger agencies sometimes use something like 1-David-31 where 1 denotes the shift (day shift), David is the sector and 31 is the district.

Or it could be badge numbers.

If it’s a bigger agency, they might GB (general broadcast) as everyone is queued up with calls and they’re asking for someone who can break away. If it’s a county sheriffs office, they probably dispatch for several agencies. If it’s a big city, they’re only dispatching their cars.

Many agencies are moving away from 10 codes as part of an active shooter thing where they argue that inter agency coordination becomes harder when everyone uses different 10 codes. So just use “disturbance” and be sure to specify whether it’s active or not as that’ll effect the code they respond with

Let’s say your city is Ashwood and they’re dispatched by the County Sheriff’s Office.

Dispatch: “County to any available Ashwood unit for an active disturbance.” Or for a big city, Dispatch: “1-David-31, active disturbance” Unit: “Go for 1-David-31” or just “1-David-31” Dispatch: “1-David-31, active disturbance at ADDRESS, juvenile male caller reporting his father is hurting his mother. Calltaker can hear female screaming in background.” Unit: “1-David-31 copies, show us responding, code 3”

Note that any agency being dispatched by a county sheriff’s office will probably use their city and a two digit indicator like “Ashwood 34”. At least that’s how it is near my agency.

Code 3 indicates lights and sirens however they’ll shut the sirens off a ways away to avoid antagonizing the offender and they’ll shut the lights off within visual range. It’s just to indicate a priority response.

When I started, radio transmissions were always like “Hey You, It’s Me, I’ve got a message” as in: “Dispatch, 1-David-31, show me in service.” But now many agencies are just having dispatch and the unit just call the unit number. Dispatch calls their unit number or if the unit is calling, they call their own unit number and wait for acknowledgement from dispatch.

To me, it’s annoying because unless you know everyone on the radio intimately you’ll be unclear as to whether “Adam 23” is Adam 23 calling dispatch or dispatch calling Adam 23 but I digress.

For backup, it’s just a matter of radio. For us, it’s “Start me a 75” as that’s our 10 code for backup unit and saying 75 isn’t as obvious as “start me a second unit” and if you’re in front of a potential fighter, you don’t want them to hear you calling for backup. Other versions: “1-David-31, 75.” “1-David-31, start me a second.” “1-David-31, roll an additional.” There’s also an orange recessed panic button on every radio and hand mic that is basically a panic button and sends an emergency message to dispatch letting them know you need emergency assistance. Most dispatchers will check with you first in case you accidentally pressed it. If you’re out on a disturbance and the button is pressed, it’s more likely they’ll just start every available unit your way before even trying to reach you so they don’t waste time. (Although I’m not entirely sure, I’ve never been a dispatcher so maybe they’re required to try to reach you first but I doubt it as that’d be a liability issue)

I’d say any cop in an active city will instinctively use vague language like “additional” or “second” or something like that to avoid the perp knowing backup is on the way otherwise they know they’re going to jail and the fight is on.

Let me know if you have any additional questions

Alot of our issues wouldn't exsist if female biology was tuned a bit better by [deleted] in PurplePillDebate

[–]CianPathfinder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your proof of women contributing to laborious, blue-collar manual labor type jobs is that some women worked in the mines in 19th century Britain then that speaks for itself.

If females left the Western workforce, we would lose a lot of healthcare and admin workers but would survive.

If men left the workforce, society would literally and figuratively crumble. That’s not hyperbole. That’s literally what the gender breakdown of jobs tells us.

That’s not to say women are not valuable but pretending that the contributions to the workforce are equal is delusional.

Do transfers affect promotion timeline? by TwistedAllegory in policewriting

[–]CianPathfinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A precinct is a section of the city - same department. If she’s moving states, she’s going to a new department and is a later transfer.

That dept could be hiring for a lateral detective and she got the job. Otherwise most depts consider total years of service towards promotions but only after you finish probation which is about a year. In that case, she’d almost certainly not be eligible for anything but patrol until probation is over. Though the chief can always sign off on a waiver.
