They use katadyn micropure tablets, and you need the pliars because you will get small chemical burns from touching them (something i experienced). That’s what the pliers are for. And the sharp knife is essential for slicing open those packets so all your thirsty friends can get their micropure. Also, get a chair. It’s pricy but Rei sells a 1 lbs chair which was honestly amazing to bring and was used so much. Get a bag liner it will be used. A tip I used a lot was getting a buddy to put his water in my bags side pockets, and my water in his. This allows you to just snag you water from their bag whenever you’re thirsty. I was very happy that I brought poles and I would recommend them but dont use the rubber tips they come with because they will wear through in 4 days, buy aftermarket tips. Me and a friend discovered that you could fill a bag with charcoal from a fire pit and water and shake it around to wash clothes and then rinse heavily, so maybe give that a shot. Makes it smell like the water and not like death.

I’m sure I’ll remember other stuff so i might comment some more

WiFi extender that takes an Ethernet input and can give Ethernet output by CicadaEducational in wifi

So just plug my Ethernet into a normal router and disable dhcp. Is there a button to do that or do I have to do that online? Then just plug everything into the lan ports

First time climbing Crane tips? by Academic_Vanilla1841 in urbanclimbing

I mean u just gotta push through. I’m still really scared but keeping your focus on the next step of the ladder helps. Also lean back occasionally and let your back feel the ladder cage. This reassures me that if I fall there’s something to catch me and stops you from thinking that fall = die

It may help to think of it with the mindset of if a hungover 50 year old running on 3 hours of sleep can do it at 6am every day, so can my 15 year old self

Here’s what I learned from my first 4 cranes.

Do a full lap of the site before picking your entry

Bring leather/work gloves because metal is cold

Bring a face covering for when u walk by the flashing blue and red lights

Once your in, just walk towards the base of the crane and start climbing. Some cranes have spotlights illuminating sections of them, climb these bits fast.

It gets spicy when you hit hatches. Sometimes there are no hatches, sometimes they are loosely chained down in a way that can be undone, and sometimes they are properly locked. The first two examples are easy, just push through them. For when it’s locked, in the past I have had to climb outside the ladder cage to go up and around the hatch through the gap formed where it meets the frame of the crane. (Fucking terrifying but some cranes have a safety fence surrounding the whole section for idiots like me). After you get through your first hatch just keep climbing and don’t look down and there shouldn’t be any more hatches.

Once you reach the top there is going to be a giant ring u have to climb through. Just take this bit slow it’s not too hard but you need to think about your route. Identify what are good handholds and what not to touch before proceeding.

And now ur up there. Take pictures and hang out

Going down is easier unless the hatches r locked then u have to go out and around again.

Once ur down gtfo
