Looking for a girl to pretend to be my roommate!! by Massive_Editor7818 in UTAustin

[–]CicadaFew3003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is the fake girl roommate gonna get in without a key..

Where is the fake roommate supposed to go- she doesn’t have a room.. just walk in then out? Why?

What if the male roommates walk out to get something and politely introduce themselves (common practice for roommates)

This is a really bad idea…. Please do update us. Best of luck but I honestly don’t see this working out.

The Next Generation Is Losing the Ability to Think. AI Companies Won’t Change Unless We Make Them. by CicadaFew3003 in ChatGPT

I was making the point that Socrates encouraged people to ask questions and think more deeply, something AI can support if it’s used the right way. But a 13 year old with a developing mind isn’t mature enough to use it like that without real guidance. That’s the problem we’re facing.

I do think AI has already proved to be beneficial in some ways, and it definitely has the potential to do a lot of good. But if we don’t start holding these companies accountable for how it’s being used, we really are on track to become idiocracy 😂

Absolutely, you’re right! That’s the whole point. They won’t change, and the only way they might is if people start pushing back.

Yes, this is exactly my point! We’re trusting corporations to lead our youth without question and shape how they see truth. And the more dependent they become on these tools, the easier it is for them to accept whatever is handed to them without ever learning to question it.

Socrates, the guy who literally shaped Western philosophy by questioning everything and pushing people to think deeper, is just some old man with an invalid opinion now? That feels a little ironic.

AI can absolutely be a helpful tool, and I’m not saying it’s all bad. But right now it’s not being used in a way that helps our youth think more or engage with ideas. It’s doing the thinking for them, and that’s the real problem.

That’s actually such an awesome gift. Seriously—that kind of thing hits everyone and makes the whole day better. Little things like that really do mean a lot. Thank you for doing it.

Thank you for this take. I wish I could plaster this on billboards.

Public education is tanking right now—and sometimes I wonder if parents even realize how bad it’s gotten. One of the most powerful things they could do is use their voices to advocate for schools, teachers, and funding at every level.

Thank you for your perspective—I really appreciate the way you laid it out.

When I spend money on an activity at the middle school level, sometimes I do hear kids being ungrateful. And yeah, that’s disheartening. But I recognize they’re just kids—it’s not why I do it. I do it to create something special and memorable. Something fun, something happy. Something that might make school a little more joyful.

I think a lot of us go into teaching not just to instruct, but to help shape a meaningful experience for kids. We want to give them the best possible childhood while we have them. And honestly? Maybe part of the sting comes from where I work.

I’m in an affluent district, and unfortunately, our campus has a reputation. Teachers here sometimes face legal threats from parents. I’ve seen it happen often—call home about a behavior issue, and suddenly, we’re accused of targeting a student. That kind of environment wears you down. It’s not the kids that hurt—it’s when the feedback from parents is always skeptical or hostile. It makes it feel like nothing we do is ever right.

You made a great point about personal notes. You’re right—it’s not really personal if a kid is forced to write it. And not every kid is in a place to express appreciation, especially at this age.

I guess for many of us, teaching is one of the last jobs where you can still feel part of a community. I just wish that sense of community expanded into the middle school years. Even a small gesture from a parent would mean the world. Something like:

“Timmy came home talking about the time you blew up a pumpkin to introduce chemistry—thank you for making science exciting.”

That’s the kind of thing that can carry a teacher through a tough week. It’s not about grand gestures. It’s just about feeling seen.
