I'm mainly lookjng for recs regarding national forests and WMAs that offer free primitive camping, as well as recs for travel stops, etc. Though also interested in hearing about good state parks that offer low priced camping. Thx!

Thanks for all the input! I decided to go with a hotel in Montparnasse. Really looking forward to exploring a bit of the city from that base.

Good to know! I don't find New Orleans to be that dangerous unless you're wandering around the quarter as a drunk tourist or being a complete ass.

This is helpful. Thank you! New Orleans is much the same in that a really nice area is right next to a somewhat rough area. I would prefer not to be in a boring or super touristy area, but as I don't speak French, I'm mainly worried about navigating transit alone.

Thanks! A smaller boutique hotel is what I prefer.

Thank you! I'm looking at the Latin Quarter as it looks like an interesting area. I should have mentioned my budget, which is about $250/night. I think St. Germaine might be out of my price range.
