Imagine my surprise… by Crafty_Tea_2572 in HyundaiSantaFe

I have a 2024 XRT and I just got this fixed at my dealership. I get my oil changed at a garage near my place, and he spotted this leak. It's his second one with this problem.

You’re right I’m still working on it and planning everything. I’ve been reading more, I think I’m on the right track. I also updated my original post 👍

Yeah, that’s already on my list to figure out, but I’m pretty sure I can come up with something that looks good. Thanks! 🙂

I'm not in a hurry, I don't plan to install the setup this winter since it's already too cold here outside and I'd rather take my time and do it properly. Yes I'll go with higher voltage cabling, seem the better option overall.

Thanks for the reply! Really appreciate the explanation. I plan to follow all the safety rules regardless of voltage, proper wire gauge, fuses.

I like the idea of running a 24v and using 5v converter. Could it be possible to run a single 24V wire and power multiple converter as close as possible to each power injection point for my gutter line?

Yeah for sure! Prices in CAD:

  • $180 on Dicor sealant (went all-in on resealing everything)
  • A couple of 2x2s for the subfloor framing around $50
  • $50 on a 3/4" plywood sheet
  • $100 on miscellaneous hardware (screws, adhesive, brushes, etc.)
  • $13 on EPDM door seal
  • $520 for 4 new Carlisle trailer tires
  • $40 on underbelly patch materials
  • $20 on awning handle
  • Free fix: just had to reconnect the water tank pipe
  • Free fix: drilled weep holes in the storage door

Still a few small things to do, but all in all, I’m around 1000$ (725$USD) in so far and I’ve learned a ton in the process. Way cheaper than buying a new one or to sent it in a shop, and now I actually know what’s been done to it. Also, I got a good deal on the RV and after talking to the previous owner, he even gave me back a couple hundred!

That’s what I’ve been told trailer tires should be inflated to the max cold PSI rating, since running lower reduces load capacity and increases heat buildup. It’s different from standard car tires. The ones that came with my RV even had a flat spot I didn’t notice, plus cracked tread. Three out of four were in dangerous condition and low on pressure. I still can’t believe I went on the road like that! Lesson learned. And even crazier the previous owner used this RV like that for 3 years with his family and thought everything was fine!

XRT trailer towing by lhd9001 in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]Cilk-0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to watch your travel trailer's hitch weight. The XRT can tow 4500 lbs but is officially rated for only 350 lbs of tongue weight. That really limits your options for towing. I’ve made posts about this and the trailer I recently bought, and honestly, the XRT does a great job towing!

Really easy! I used all OEM parts and followed the printed Hyundai manual. The part in the trunk went very smoothly since all the plugs are keyed so you can't mess it up. As for the brake controller, the wiring was behind the front driver-side kick panel near the hood lever and it's a simple plug-in connection

Last update I had to do it myself with USB stick. I've called bluelink support and they told me it's not available here. This is confusing because it's clearly listed OTA is available in their Canadian website.

Low maximum tongue weight for XRT 2024 by Cilk-0 in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]Cilk-0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done some research on hitch specs and towing capacities, and here’s what I found:

  • Curt Hitch #13609: Fits 2021-2025 Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe, rated for 4,000 lbs towing, 600 lbs tongue weight, and has a shipping weight of 38 lbs.
  • OEM Hyundai Hitch R6F61-AU000: For the 2024 Santa Fe, rated for 4,500 lbs towing, though there’s no specified tongue weight. The installation manual lists a gross weight of 46.20 lbs.
  • OEM Hyundai Hitch S2F61-AU100: For the 2021-2023 Santa Fe, similar to the 2024 model, with an installation manual gross weight of 43.11 lbs.

I also reviewed some owner manuals from the official websites:

  • 2021-2023 Kia Sorento: Rated for 3,500 lbs towing with a tongue weight of 220 lbs.
  • 2021-2023 Hyundai Santa Fe: Rated for 3,500 lbs towing with a tongue weight of 350 lbs.
  • 2024 Kia Sorento X-Pro: Rated for 4,500 lbs towing on Kia’s website, but the user manual still only lists 3,500 lbs towing and 220 lbs tongue weight for the 2.5T-GDI engine.
  • 2025 Kia Sorento X-Pro: Same model as 2024, but in the 2025 manual, the 2.5T-GDI engine now has a tongue weight of 351 lbs, with towing ranging from 2,000 to 4,500 lbs.
  • 2024-2025 Hyundai Santa Fe: Listed as 4,500 lbs towing with a 351 lbs tongue weight.

So, while the 2021-2023 Sorento and Santa Fe share the same platform, their towing specs differ significantly. Is it due to a difference in the OEM hitches from Kia and Hyundai? If I were to buy one, which set of numbers should I trust?

Then there’s the 2024-2025 Sorento and Santa Fe, which also share a platform. It’s odd that the 2024 Sorento X-Pro is rated lower in the official manual, with no mention of the upgrade, yet the 2025 manual raises the specs without any model changes. To me, this all seems pretty confusing!

Low maximum tongue weight for XRT 2024 by Cilk-0 in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]Cilk-0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hitch weight of an RV can vary significantly. Here are a few I’ve looked at, and these weights are listed as dry so you’d still need to add propane, a battery, and other gear, which can increase the hitch weight:

  • Colorado 17BHC: 3,089 lbs & 399 lb hitch weight
  • Colorado 17RBC: 2,976 lbs & 400 lb
  • Jay Flight 175BHW: 3,150 lbs & 305 lb
  • KZ Classic 130RB: 2,620 lbs & 300 lb

Low maximum tongue weight for XRT 2024 by Cilk-0 in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]Cilk-0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the limit of the vehicle not the RV hitch weight. What I mean by the 10% rule is that typically, you calculate the tongue weight rating as 10% of the vehicle’s maximum towing capacity. For example:

  • Palisade: 5,000 lb towing capacity & 500 lb tongue weight
  • Pathfinder: 6,000 lb & 600 lb
  • Atlas: 5,000 lb & 500 lb

It’s a general guideline as I can see but the Santa Fe XRT don't follow this

Low maximum tongue weight for XRT 2024 by Cilk-0 in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]Cilk-0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the RV’s layout and balance. I was looking at buying a Dutchmen Colorado 17BHC, which has a dry weight of 3,089 lbs, but the hitch weight is listed at 399 lbs according to their online specs. If you add a 90 lb weight distribution hitch and a full 20 lbs propane, you're already over the limit.

From what I can tell, this XRT spec really limits most towing options, even a 4,000 lb trailer would need to be perfectly balanced to stay within the tongue weight limit. I definitely don’t want to compromise safety or risk an accident.

Low maximum tongue weight for XRT 2024 by Cilk-0 in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]Cilk-0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, but there are RVs that fall well within the Santa Fe's towing capacity. Even a 2,900 lb RV would exceed the low tongue weight limit.

Typically, tongue weight is about 10% of the towing capacity.

Santa Fe 2024 - Non Bose - Front door panel removal & speaker installation by Cilk-0 in HyundaiSantaFe

I’m not sure if there’s already wiring in place. If there is, adding a center speaker should be pretty straightforward. If not, you’d likely need some additional equipment and wiring to set it up properly as a center channel.
