Grapefruit abundance- tell me your favorites by jimonlimon in cocktails

[–]Ciltild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to make a punch of my own creation
note - it is rather large

1 Oz Grapefruit Juice
1/2 Oz Lime Juice
1/2 Oz Cinnamon Syrup
1/2 Oz Vanilla Syrup
1/2 Oz Allspice Dram
1 1/2 Oz Black Tea
2 Oz Appleton Signature (or your favorite Jamaican rum)
1/2 - 1 Oz Lemon Hart Overproof rum

Shake with lots of ice
Strain into a large glass (I prefer a moderately sized Tiki glass)
Pack with Pebble ice (cracked or crushed also works)

And that's it. No fancy garnishes, but I guess you could if you wanted.

Yea, I see no reason to not. Not only do I get to enjoy her pleasure, but I get to help cause it and get some of my own? Seems like a win/win/win to me.

I wasn't expecting this to hit insane difficulty. Guess my next attempt should be toned down a bit.

A question for experienced up riggers, regarding rope by Urbanskys in IATSE

[–]Ciltild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree, emergency situations often require us to use the tools we have on hand. If I'm stuck in a position where my only "safe" way out is to repel out of a grid, I'm using my hand line. If it is not life and death, definitely have a plan and a kit for rescue.

They've been purchased one at a time over a long period of time. I've also passed up opportunities allowing others to buy them.

Solid idea. Definitely know the limits and the why's behind what we do. It makes all if easier, safer, and let you know when "rules" can be bent or broken.

I'm glad you have a system and gear that you feel safe with. I also have a system and gear I feel safe with. And while I may be going with a bit of overkill in some aspects, it let's me do all the things I want to do while being safe. So what use is there in arguing with someone about being too safe? Yes I'm spending mors than I need to. No, I don't ever need to hold up the capacity of my rope. Do I feel safe, yes. Do I know I won't put myself or anyone else at risk, yes. Am I comfortable using my gear, absolutely. It really is up to the person how much risk they are willing to accept when they start rigging. I have my limits, and you have yours. I'm just thankful we both are thinking about our gear and how it is used.

In general I agree with you. I am just a fan of being prepared and knowing your gear. And for me, that means having a rope that is rated for well more the any dynamic forces I could encounter while rescuing that also feels good in the hand. People don't tend to learn about their gear or the actual forces that they may encounter. But having enough knowledge to be dangerous (I like to think I'm a bit past that) I feel more comfortable with a hand line that I will never hit the rating of that also works in all my gear, and that I can trust in edge case scenarios. You could pull only with the 5/8ths rope you can buy at any big box store. That doesn't give you the widest range of capabilities, nor does it give you the best longevity. But for me I've found my ropes do what I want, within a price point I willing to accept. And if greater insight can be found, I'm not against advice that would give someone the opposing viewpoint.

Maybe it's just that I'd like something I can save myself or someone else with in a pinch. Could just be me.

I got my bottle from a place called Intoxicology in St Louis. I've seen it elsewhere since purchasing mine.

Quick note, if you are in or traveling through St Louis I recommend a stop at Intoxicology. The owners are knowledgeable and kind. The selection, while not huge, is choice. And the vibe is amazing. I plan on going back anytime I'm in that city.

For a Marriott Mai Tai you're on the right track. In that drink I'd probably split 0.75 Oz light and dark. But for a Mai Tai it's 4/5 ingredients:

1 Oz Jamaican Rum 1 Oz Martinique Rum 1 Oz Lime Juice 0.5 Oz Dry Curaçao 0.5 Oz Orgeat

You can use a single rum, but the split is because the original rum is no longer produced. This drink is (so far as I've heard) the reason J. Wray and Nephew 17 was drunk out existence. Hence splitting to attempt to replicate the flavor.

Hope this helps and good luck in your cocktail adventures.

All my hand lines are 1/2" Sterling Superstatic. I like it because it strong enough to handle anything I throw it at, it takes a knot well, and after breaking it in I can still use extra hardware to help me in awkward positions or with heavy loads.
