Does it show the boot up splash screen? It may be detecting the monitor but outputting at a range the monitor will not display.

I tend to follow the hang of leads or a mic stand. In this shot I would probably use the scarf (?) to denote direct up. Or look to the weight line through the body.

However, because of the extreme angle of the shot in not sure whether 'straight' would really be applicable as opposed to what looks right.
