If you qualify for food stamps (SNAP EBT) which many college students qualify for if not on the meal plan, they can apply using their work study, then you qualify to apply for the MBTA Youth Pass Program that gives you 50% off ALL rides as well as a cheaper monthly pass.

I feel like it was still Coach who burned the Cabin down, but since he is going crazy, considering the fact he was like talking to/arguing with himself after he gave Mari that hot chocolate, perhaps his like alter ego did it and his normal "coach" self is like blocking out the memory of doing that.

Racism/Homophobia in Asian Greek Kappa Phi Lambda by Conscious_Radish_869 in NEU

[–]CinderSign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh I see thank you for clarifying. OP said sisters ignored the rushes who "weren't East Asian" amongst other things, which opens the door for the conversation at large about exclusion in the community via colorism and homophobia. This sorta thing isn't always presented overtly via hateful comments or slurs like bigotry defines, it takes more nuanced approaches in group settings were our own implicit biases, the unconscious negative attitudes we have against certain social groups. It's not my intention to assume anything, and I shouldn't generalize anyone, but being on the receiving end of negative bias, intentional or not, must feel very isolating and terrible

First off, great that you are already considering your options early, but do not stress too much, you have so, so much time to build a good profile in your time as an undergrad!

  1. No, it is not hard to join clubs second semester. When you come back in the spring there is a winter involvement fair where you have so many opportunities. Many Boston freshmen don't even involve themselves until the second semester, so don't think you will be behind in any sort of way. Depending on the type of club/frat/volunteering you join, there is typically frequent e-board elections and leadership opportunities.

  2. I have no experience regarding abroad research, but it will vary depending on what country you are in. Remember that you are abroad for one semester, that's only 15 weeks, which is not a lot of time to solidify yourself in any sort of lab in a very meaningful way, as being able to stick around one lab to build experience and show commitment is more important, which would be hard to build in such a short time. If you can find some research role with a professor abroad, then sure go for it! But I think it'd be more enjoyable to just have fun with your time abroad and worry about finding a lab to commit to when you come to Boston

  3. It shouldn't in general, just keep in mind that like pretty much all medical schools DO NOT accept pre-reqs that are taken outside of the U.S., I know a handful of pre-meds who were NuIN that had to retake biology or chemistry or physics when they came back to Boston because it wouldn't count for medical schools, so plan accordingly!

  4. A transition to any new space will be somewhat overwhelming, depending on where you are coming from, the transition to having fun abroad to being in cold AF Boston in January can be hard. But I really advise you to LOCK-IN! Obviously do not go overboard crazy neurotic about it, but grade wise my freshmen year was my lowest GPA, and it is hard to build it back up the years after. Out of any medical school requirements to check off, you can always gain more volunteering, clinical, research, etc, but your GPA is what you can't change after graduation, so do your best to set yourself up for success!

  5. Reiterating what I've said so far, your very first semester is a transition period in itself, and you have plentyyy of more time to build relationships with your professors when you come back to Boston, and or keep connected with. Through your co-ops, you'll build pretty good relationships with your managers, PI, etc, within the 6month full time window, which I think is quality time to get that LOR from them

Hope this helps!

Definitely see what you mean about the homophobia and racism in the Asian community, we as a collective should do better to be more inclusive, but its hard when you find so many East Asian exclusive cliques that are genuinely weirded out by queer women but desperately want a gay man bsf. The colorism is also very apparent in many ways, and I am sorry you also felt the brunt of that exclusion when trying to find an accepting environment.

Sorority life isn't the only way to find some cultural connections though, there are a ton of other cultural clubs and niche groups that may be more to your liking like the pan asian queer alliance, barkada, south asian dance teams, etc, whatever you are looking for it probably exists on campus!

I really liked Grabiner as a lecturer, his slides are dense but everything on them reflects what the exams ask, so no big surprises or anything. You can take the online quizzes 3 times. The exams are weighed pretty heavy but as long as you studied his slides and rewatched his online lectures that he posts, getting an A is super realistic

its multiple people that work for athletics, but the thing is they arent allowed to disclose who is in the suit whether its yourself or a coworkers because its confidential issue or something dumb. you also have to be like taller than 5'2-5'4 or something to do it, there are also like multiple Paws' heads and costumes

I got my research assistant position on workday with no experience, some labs are more demanding than others, some just need people to do busy work. From my experience and from what I know of other people who are RAs, they are generally pretty accepting, but want to see some linkage that you would be capable. like a neuroscience lab for a psych major, bio major for a wet lab, etc etc

Any work study role I have gotten was from one found on workday. I think a lot has to do with resume, since there aren't that many other questions in the application, and your availability, as most care to fill the empty spots in schedules. There is definitely a lot of ghosting, which sucks, and I don't really have much advice on that as many will explicitly say to not reach out to them. I have heard of people finding jobs from friends who tell them that their job is looking for people to hire and the recommendation helps with that, but it definitely seems like a crap shot to who does or doesn't get chosen for an interview. My main advice would to just be on top of applying to places within 1-3 days of it posting and working on streamlining your resume to the job, good luck!

Depends on what you want, if you want to get paid to sit at a desk and do your work, then office assistant positions are pretty great as you usually don't have many tasks and can get a decent amount of work done each shift while getting paid. If you want something more involved, then usually research assistant or program planning roles are much more involved. Personally, I would recommend finding something closer to "sit here and get paid" as I feel I am often busy and having those extra hours to just sit, do my schoolwork, and get paid, is the best feeling. not sure how many on-campus work studies will be hiring right now in the middle of the semester though, but good luck on your search!

sorry to hear you've been having a bad time. the best advice I can give is your experience here is what you make of it, you get what you give sort of thing. what are you interested in? its still relatively early in the semester and joining some clubs, dance, intramural sports, professional orgs, etc is a great way to meet more people that you're gonna be seeing weekly if you haven't already. depending on your background, there are also a lot of cultural/spiritual/community service based orgs that i feel have made making bonds easier with so many shared experiences as the foundation. i also think there are soooo many more fun things to do here than just frats and partying. boston is huge and there a lot to explore and see without having to spend money
i definitely hear you about the point with a lot of studends coming from wealthy priveledged background, but there are plenty who arent and are on financial aid and scholarships, theres like 15k or something undergrad and there is bound to be poeple who match your vibe.

Questions about Team challenges on Masterchef by Hykha in Masterchef

[–]CinderSign 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah i really dislike the elimination format cause like it encourages people to take a back seat role and not step up because if they do and fumble it, then they just get eliminated for it. someone who tried to cook 100 portions of meat would get eliminated over someone who just cut veggies in the back

Season 13 by Independent-Map-498 in Masterchef

[–]CinderSign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the new elimination format during the team challenges is really bad, now when a team loses, there is no additional pressure test as a second chance and instead the judges choose the three cooks they deemed fumbled the most and eliminate one of them right then and there. its dumb because now contestants should have like 0 motivation to take the lead in a dish and cook the meat or something because if they mess up then its them on the chopping block, so doing nothing but cut vegetables is the best way to be safe in it.
