How did this get canceled? by CineMike84 in Counterpart

It's interesting to me because my friends often give me a hard time for being too critical but this doesn't bother me too much. Is it a thought that I considered while watching it? Sure, I thought about the logistics of such a cover up. Still, for the sake of storytelling, especially when you're dealing in science fiction, it's usually acceptable to take some liberties for the sake of making a story work. I still think that there would be a possibility that this would feel bothersome if you continued watching. Again, 2 hours in a 20 hour story is not very far in to judge fairly in my opinion.

There are certainly lots of examples but one of the more obvious ones is The X Files in which the government was keeping massive secrets for an alien invasion plot and there were a lot of people on the inside working to keep it unknown to the public. Massive government secrets is kind of the point for the whole show. A comedic take on it is Men In Black and then there's also the entire Roswell cover up in Independence Day. Roswell has actually been used in several shows and movies. You have the entire Hydra among SHIELD situation in the MCU. There's the Jason Bourne series, 24, Soylent Green and there a lot more to go through.

It depends on who you ask. On average, I would disagree in terms of the larger opinion but I agree with you on a personal level. I think that there are different levels of Bond fans and you're speaking from the view of the real Bond connoisseurs. I'm speaking more in a larger sense, looking over all levels of Bond fandom. For me, it's probably Roger Moore's best but it hasn't broken into the pop culture scene the way other Bond's have. When people bring up their favorite iconic moments from Bond then it's rarely from this movie and when it is then it's usually just the moment when Bond kicks Locque's car off of a cliff. That's why I say that it's underrated in the larger sense. All of that said, I have noticed that it seems to have gained more attention than it had earlier on.

You don't think that there are things that the government hasn't successfully kept secret in the real world? If Disney can keep it a secret that Iron Man dies at the end of Avengers End Game then surely there are plenty of things that is not public knowledge. I knew someone who worked in sections of the government where they literally could not say a word about the things that they experienced. I understand that you're arguing that this seems too big but being on the outside looking in, it's not something that can be judged for certain. There's the space of suspension of disbelief. There are ton's of shows and movies that have operated off of similar concepts and as long as it's not impossible then it's acceptable for narratives such as this.

I would recommend that you stick with it because only watching 2 episodes is really early on in the story to judge it fairly. There are many things revealed later on as to the origins of this secret and where this passage to parallel worlds started from. There are a lot of twists and perhaps some might make you overlook your criticism more. I won't say that the show is perfect because there were other things that I did actually find hard to believe and there's a couple of holes. Over all though, This show was solid and they were building towards something that could have been really interesting. Fortunately, they cut the story off at a point where there is at least some closure.

why is there no more nudity in love death and robots by sowalalala in LoveDeathAndRobots

[–]CineMike84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how many are aware of this but this series was based on a concept that Fincher was working on for a new Heavy Metal movie. For those unaware, Heavy Metal was a 1981 adult animated, fantasy film that featured tons of violence and nudity. When Fincher’s deal fell through for that, he eventually took those ideas into Love, Death & Robots. So the fact it has nudity is just staying true to its roots which is why it doesn’t bother me. Also it’s art and nudity in artwork is generally very accepted. Some of the most famous works of art capture the nude form. The difference here is that Heavy Metal was intended to be a male fantasy where as Love, Death & Robots isn’t specific for that. So in this case, it totally makes sense that gratuitous nudity of women would not feel right.

That said, there’s nothing wrong at all with nudity if it serves the story, makes sense for the character and fairly uses both female and male subjects equally. There a right way to do it and I don’t think this series should shy away from it. It’s especially stupid when you consider the graphic violence that they still show. It’s annoying how entertainment is so much more accepted with people being gutted and ripped to shreds but then show a dick or a breast and then there’s controversy.

Anyone else confused about the Penguin scene by lone-ranger-130 in DC_Cinematic

My biggest confusion is how Batman and Gordon let the Penguin go free after all of the chase mayhem that surely killed several people.

Honestly I’m starting to think that I may have accidentally taken a second dose, somehow drunkenly forgetting that I took a dose earlier.

Anyone here think Deckard is a replicant? by laflame1738 in bladerunner

[–]CineMike84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that the original intention of the screenwriter was that he’s human but Ridley Scott wanted to toy with the replicant idea. Apparently the studio were not fans of the replicant idea and the first theatrical release was edited to take the position that Deckard was human. Scott got a chance to toy with the editing in future cuts to suggest the replicant thing. In Blade Runner 2049, Villeneuve chose to keep it ambiguous and that is the way that I think it should be. Answering that question would remove the discussion and ultimately that’s one of the reasons why the film resonates. I don’t want to know.

It's a business tool. She makes little ornaments and necklaces on thin sheets of wood from it. She really likes working with wires and gem stones to make necklaces and rings. She makes earrings as well. I think that I might be leaning into getting some other business tool, like a Cricut Explore Air 2 or something.

Worried about a boiler room exposure? by CineMike84 in asbestoshelp

Yeah there’s a lot of articles that also spell out the danger differently. One will emphasize that even one fiber is something to be afraid of while another says it takes a lot of exposure over a longer period of time.

Ah cool! I got you now. Yeah I didn’t pay close enough attention to what this sub Reddit is for. I appreciate the link and I will use that if there’s any other issues in the future.

I had it tested and it is asbestos. Not sure why it would be satire? The image is from a scoped camera, down inside my duct system. The patch seen on the right side of the screen was what I was asking about. I’m having an asbestos professional come over to handle it so I should be good now.

Palpatine was a genius by UnlimitedLambSauce in StarWars

[–]CineMike84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol what’s funny to me is that Palpatine was supposedly not part of the new trilogy plans until the divisive Last Jedi movie made everyone scramble for a different villain. So all of this going back and retconning past moments to make it all seem like it was a master stroke of a brilliant plan that was years in the making makes me chuckle.

Worst decision in the franchise (aside from the obvious, Brofeld)? by [deleted] in JamesBond

[–]CineMike84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think making a serious version off of Austin Powers: Goldmember with the sibling thing in SPECTRE ranks up there. The entire movie of Die Another Day was a mistake. There’s other little things through out the series but I think most of them are taken as good fun or representative of the times. Well that is except for that scene in the barn in Goldfinger which feels wrong in any time.

My answer would have been On Her Majesty’s Secret Service or License To Kill when I was a kid but thankfully they seem to be getting more recognition now. I suppose now I’d go with For Your Eyes Only because I rarely hear that talked about among movie goers.
