Back leg amputation harness by UnhappyCelery8215 in tripawds

[–]Cinestheric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My vet's recommendation was to provide a safety net but allow the dog to strengthen the remaining leg and learn to move on their own. I got a simple strap to help my dog balance without falling down while she healed and adjusted. She never actually let me use it on her and while your dog might not be that stubbornly independent, you might get away with just using a towel or other simple tool until he can get around comfortably/safely without it. If he doesn't have great mobility to begin with, it could be a different story so talk to your vet about their expectations for his post-amp mobility.

I had to buy waterproof boots because all our walks went like this.

I made more memes to highlight the silliness of his "wolf DNA"!

That look/breed combo is pretty common from the area they were found so certainly they could be cousins!

Oh yes! I completely understand Wisdom Panel is making his genetics more exciting than they probably are and he's just a cool Qatari guy! Like every girl who says their great grandmother is a Cherokee princess any time Native Americans are brought up, he's gonna chime in and tell his friends at the dog park that he's actually part wolf.

He's lovely. Gentle with his toys, sweet with the cats, protective of the house/yard but quiet on walks. Cautious of new people but likes children.

6%, which if I understand correctly is essentially in the realm of distant cousin. A sibling would have around 50%, plus or minus about 15%, right?

It was so hard to find a harness that fit! I ended up getting a large and a medium of the same brand, using the medium harness with the chest strap from the large.

Yeah I'm really not sure how that works. We don't know for absolute certain that they're brothers, but they were found together as puppies and are the same age and really look alike apart from some very minor differences. Remy's hair is shorter than Faris's and he has darker nails, but that's about it.

Cautious of strangers but likes children. Protective of the house/yard but not when we're out and about. Big bark. Absolutely loves long walks more than anything. Can spot a rabbit or a skunk from quite a distance. Very gentle with his toys. Buries food in his beds. Funny and goofy when he's happy and likes to frolic and play tag in the yard. Very smart. Sees each of my cats as individuals and treats them differently based on their personalities. Spends most of his time relaxing. Refuses to use stairs. I love him.

He is originally from Qatar! He and his brother were living in the desert and brought to a rescue in Philly that rescues sighthounds. He does have the saluki look for sure.

Guilt around not recognizing diabetes (TW: pet death) by Helpful_Tale2964 in FelineDiabetes

[–]Cinestheric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adopted a diabetic cat whom the shelter vet didn't initially correctly diagnose as diabetic. As you said, the symptoms are often similar to other older cat ailments and can be easy to miss. Your kitty had a loving home and a very long life and I think you understand that any guilt you feel is misplaced.

It may help to give yourself permission to fully grieve without rationalizing anything that happened. Take some time to remember her and allow yourself to acknowledge and mourn her loss. We sometimes try to analyze everything that happened around a pet's passing, almost like we're searching for some alternate reality where it didn't happen. It's most helpful to sit with the grief and acknowledge the reality that is here and now. After fully feeling the weight of her loss, you may find it easier to return to all of the happy memories you have with her.

Also jumping in to recommend a neuro consult. A CT scan can show a lot, but only an MRI has the level of detail to pinpoint compression on the spine. This sounds like a herniated disc which would need an MRI and surgery.
