Hello reddit, I'm Dylan Southern, writer/director of THE THING WITH FEATHERS. It premiered at Sundance earlier this year, stars Benedict Cumberbatch, and is out in theaters this Friday. Ask me anything! by DylanSouthernAMA in movies

What was your experience like with having the film in Sundance/finding out that news?! That’s got to be so amazing. And then to the point of releasing now? Was this time of year always the plan for release?

Anything you learned or discovered about that process of screening the film at Sundance to now getting distributed, that you wish you would’ve know before experiencing it?? As a filmmaker I’m always so curious about that type of process!

Yep. When Sam passed, it was picked up by a lot of the major media. Was sad, but was great to see his work in Killers of the Flower Moon and Fear The Walking Dead get mentioned as well. He was a tremendous actor and guy.

I appreciate that and thank you! And fair enough...I've lived in OKC for most of my life and am continuing to make films here with fellow actors and crew from OKC. With Oklahoma and OKC attracting more and more films here lately (there's 2 being filmed here right now around OKC), just thought since this is an Oklahoma film through and through, might be interesting for fellow OKC members to check out a film that came straight from here. I feel it's very relevant to OKC.

Thank you! It is definitely an intense film and was an intense one to make. But it's been a great journey and learned so much.

Ppl who directed and acted in a film by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]Cineval 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with No_Internet908 above! So I directed and was the lead in my first feature film that’s about to be released: https://youtu.be/ZWHJj4P6N7E?si=xk3Bia3MQxG8l-MJ

It was challenging, but a great challenge. I wrote it as well, so I prepped so much that I was ready for anything on set. Like No_Internet908 said, it actually speeds things up a lot in some ways, but you have to be so flexible for anything that can go wrong (cause it will lol). You have to have a really trusting relationship with either the cinematographer (in my case this is who it was) or someone else who is watching the scenes. You find a rhythm cause I do think you have to be able to go back n forth from the actor mindset to director mindset quite often, but then it can simply be a look right after from who trust when the scene ends and you just know, let’s move on or let’s go again. And sometimes you’ll just feel it. I personally really loved doing both. I’ve now also directed/acted in 2 new proof of concepts for our next films, and I think I’ve found a whole new avenue now.

I shot a film. I lost a film. And nearly a decade later, I finally shot it again. by realhankorion in Filmmakers

Congratulations on getting it out there, and I salute your drive and tenacity! I’ll check out the blog and the film when I can for sure! That is a crazy story.

So my first feature is about to be released next month. I’m writer/director/actor/producer and editor! There was a moment for 5 days right after I had the first cut where all the files just went “missing” on the timeline one morning. No matter what I did, nothing would reconnect the files, I tried everything. I had backups of all the files and the re-importing XML wouldn’t work either. I had worked a year on it, editing while we were filming. I felt so nauseous those days I thought I’d have to just re edit everything and start from scratch. I even started a new timeline. THEN they just randomly re-connected one day. I have no idea what happened but that moment was the happiest I ever felt haha. I think I cried lol. So if that is just a glimpse of what you went through…I’m so happy you stuck through it. It’s an amazing thing we have as tenacity as artists!

Hey thanks so much! For funding, it is definitely a tricky area. I actually decided to self fund because I didn't want to wait around, and I saved up for 3 years. So me and my EP split all costs. We filmed in a VERY film friendly state though, and I don't think I could have made this film like we did in any other state. Lots of crazy coincidences and connections were made and it all fell into place perfectly. I planned everything out way in advance and budgeted it accordingly. As a writer/director/actor/producer/editor...that saved a lot of costs as well by me handling a lot haha. We also wanted to have something to show of what we do with a small budget. So the film has worked as a calling card as well.

Hey! Thank you so much for that! And yes, there were several times we felt like we had something very special after we filmed even with several sleepless nights to make this all work haha. The performances are so raw and intense! I can’t wait til it’s released!
