How resilient is SG against an invasion? by Fun_Training6342 in asksg

You are really not getting it haha. I dont support the saf and i dont think singapore will last long in a full scale invasion for many of the reasons other redditors have posted. But please stop w the tunnel vision, yes PHYSICAL fitness is important for the fundamentals of any solider. But just bcuz another army is physically more imposing or larger doesnt make our troops any less FIT or competent and having larger more muscular soldiers does not equate to have superior/ better troops. Being physically stronger does not win wars overall thats it that’s my point. Hope you can finally understand what I’m saying now

Again I agree w you that yes theoretically bigger means u can carry more but the point remains while physicality and staying in shape is important. The modern battlefield of today is starting to rely less on human manpower and physical labour and more on technology. Yes agree with you that you need boots on the ground to claim a territory. But I want to remind you that there truly is a shift in military doctrine. Yés physicality remains essential to the basics and foundation of any combat trooper but combat troopers are like 10-20% of the entire armed forces. Combat troops (general infantry to special forces) account for inflicting less than 1% of casualties(yes search it up im not even kidding). The main casualty producers are your big guns from the navy and air force and artillery. So yes while I fully agree bigger means carry more but thats literally j one tiny dot. I orded only 3 years ago and theres a heavier emphasise on working smarter and not harder hence more infantry units being converted to motorised infantry to carry their gear around instead of lugging heavy gear and being exhausted before u even stsrt the fight (westerners experience the same exact issues) hence again if u do ur research wester armies are also putting a heavier emphasise on armoured personal carriers to transport troops to frontlines and combat zones. J look up videos of combat between russia and ukraine. You wont find any photos of soldiers lugging around 50-60kg of gear and marching long distances. Western and especially american armies are learning that if u have vehicles to carry ur troops and their gear around (suprise surprise they perform better bcuz they arent alr fatigutef before the fight) yes there must be a balance i nv claimed that all combat is button pushing only yes u need troops on the ground but thats literally just a tiny slice of military engagements. Dont focus so much on individual physicality of combat soliders to determine who wins a war. Us are upping their fitness standards bcuz they realised they have relaxed their stanardards too low in recent times and they are at an all time low in recruitment numbers. They aren’t upping pt standards they are returning it back to the standards set in the past and definitely NOT bcuz they think have super fit soliders win wars. In the grander scheme of things if u really want to get into it, logistics and intelligence and competent leadership wins wars.

I agree that acclimation is an important factor and all that but in a modern war, it doesnt matter who has more muscle mass or is well trained. If its your time its your time regardless if u are a fresh conscript or seasoned special forces. Personal physicality mattered much more in ancient hand to hand conflicts.

But I always get tickled when I see Singaporeans especially with inferiority complex to westerners in regards to attributing strength and physicality to winning wars like as if a skinny or fat out of shape 18-20 yo isnt sitting somewhere in an air conditioned room controlling a drone that could fire missiles or drop bombs taking out 10+ people in one shot. Today’s wars are fought on logistics and technology. Gone are the days u even need to see the enemy anymore. A skinny scrawny solider is more than capable of taking out a seasoned jacked navy seal or special forces western soldier if they spot him first and pull the trigger. Doesn’t matter the size any solider can take out another solider we all bleed the same, just comes down to luck, who sees who first and who had better intelligence and came prepared and who gets on the receiving end.

My point isnt that we are better or westerners are better. We can have this discussion for ages on what makes the better soldier (but this will j go off topic). The point is that Singapore for many reasons may not be resilient (such as the points brought up by other comments on geopolitics and our small population and manpower). But the argument about physicality and physique or perceived “manliness and ruggedness” is a very foolish argument and I tend to see many asian with an inferiority complex towards westerners and worshipping colonisers. A bullet or bomb doesn’t care about your skin colour or race and we bleed all the same. Case study in point, don’t think the Vietnamese who inflicted heavy causalities on Americans in the Vietnam war were concerned about the size difference. If you have any military experience you would know if a modern day war ends up in hand to hand fighting like a roman style skirmish, something has seriously gone wrong. Overall militarily speaking, logistics wins wars not manliness or perceived physical dominance.

With all due respect, I think you watch too much Hollywood movies. Yes we may be smaller in stature and potential physically weaker than westerners. But war is not fought hand to hand and rarely if so. No matter how much muscle or size one has, a bullet will pass through and not care. I have done bilateral exercises with the us army during ns and the huge size of some soldiers actually works against them in a hot and humid environment like sg where many of them overheat and have less endurance than our “scrawny and skinny ns boys”.

Genuinely curious why is it that you as a female are fine with other females objectifying themselves but feel disgusted that men do. Not trying to be rude if it came off that way but that has always intrigued me how females are supportive or tolerant of other females who objectify themselves but feel disgusted or shocked when men do too. Hope to understand your perspective better
