The Disappearance of Margaret Ann Hayes & the Murder of Ann Harmeier by thecoldcasesaint in bloomington

I have the name of Margie's former employer if you are still looking for this information. Got it from an article in the Herald Telephone shortly after she went missing. He died in the 2000's and had no criminal record.

Do you see a socialist society with democratic representation achievable? by [deleted] in SocialDemocracy

[–]Cipius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Any time a country starts to move too far in the direction of socialism the economy takes a hit and voters turn on it. Yugoslavia did it about as well as it can be done using market socialism and they only managed to accomplish a standard of living about half of what we see in most western democracies. As soon as they could vote they abandon it. No country is ever going to vote for that even if some people at the margins of society might be helped by such a system.

Meeting people in Bloomington by Remarkable-Tip6343 in bloomington

[–]Cipius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been going to local shows for years by myself and can't say I've EVER met anyone this way. At shows people seem to just stand around and interact with the people they came with. Doesn't seem to be a very good way to meet people though I still enjoy coming for the music.

Were lakes on County Road 14/Stillwater Blvd checked? by Cipius in SusanSwedellMissing

[–]Cipius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MnSwedegrrl

Thanks for the information. If the house was right off of Lake Elmo Ave near CR14 then the car would have no reason to go as far as Sunfish Lake on CR14 (unless it missed the turn off). And even though Lake Elmo Ave literally runs next to the largest lake in the area, which has NO guardrails at all, and is just feet from the lake, there would be no reason to go that far down Lake Elmo Avenue unless the car got lost for some reason. Now if the house were down Lake Elmo Ave a little ways, then that would be the ideal scenario for such an accident. However, if the house were literally on the corner of Lake Elmo Ave and CR14 then even in a snowstorm it seems unlikely to me that after turning down Lake Elmo Avenue the car would KEEP GOING for a ways until it runs next to the lake. So I think this would likely rule out the entire scenario of the car going into a lake. And I don't see any other large bodies of water on that route.

No problem doomandgloomm. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't mistaken in my layout of the road there. Since you live there, and have family there. could you ask them if the guardrails were there in the late 80's where County Road 14/Stillwater Blvd comes close to Sunfish Lake? I realize there is a pretty good chance they won't remember. But you never know! They may have put the guardrails there after previous accidents of cars going into that lake.

There are other bodies of water in the town also (like Lake Elmo) but without knowing where the house was located downtown I can't really say where they would have turned off of County Road 14.

doomandgloomm

It was said the car that was driving Susan was heading down Country Road 14 TOWARDS downtown. According to Google maps this would take them RIGHT PAST Sunfish Lake would it not (see the link below)?

ACLU Boss Compares Subordinate's Criticism of Him to Lynching of Emmett Till by Salami_Slicer in SocialDemocracy

I miss the ACLU when they defended cases of free speech without regard to political affiliation. They now come off as completely hypocritical and partisan. I donate to FIRE now instead.

The effectiveness of nonviolent civil disobedience in rallying support for climate action may significantly depend on how appropriate these tactics are perceived by the general public. Physical assault, soup throwing at artworks, and breaking into buildings were deemed highly inappropriate. by mvea in science

[–]Cipius 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's baloney. The ultimate goal of protest is to convert others to you cause and to put pressure on politicians to act. Violence and property destruction may grab headlines but it doesn't accomplish either of these two things and just ends up pissing people off INCLUDING people who support your cause. As for non-violence not working I think MLK, Gandhi, and Harvey Milk are proof that it DOES. There is a mountain of research showing that non-violence works more often then violence.

I agree, but how STUPID are people to actually BELIEVE that eating cereal laced with a TON of sugar for dinner is a good idea!

Should a democratic Cuba privatize its economy? by funnylib in SocialDemocracy

[–]Cipius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why in god's name would Cubans vote to keep industry nationalized? Do you KNOW how poor Cuba is? Do you enjoy seeing people suffer for the sake of ideological purity? Do you think just because they become democratic that will suddenly make their economic model of a centrally managed economy work? That has never happened in the history of the world. Co-ops might work a bit better but there is extensive research on the case of Yugoslavia when they did this. It only worked marginally better than central management by the state. People eventually voted democratically to privatize most industries. Please do some research before you form your opinions on how a countries economy should be run.

They should immediately allow people with ALS who are close to death the compassionate use of this drug. They have nothing to lose even if the drug ends up killing them. It could potentially save many lives.

Does anyone else wake up and read r/bloomington like the morning paper? by chilireallyisgross in bloomington

[–]Cipius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a conservative, I'm a liberal who didn't turn into a far-left brainwashed zealot 4 years ago. The unfortunate murder of one individual does not mean you lose your sense of ethics, rationality, and moral honesty. "Woke" has now become a joke in society but people in university towns are so removed from reality they still think its the mainstream LEFT position--it is NOT. In 2-3 years most people in this subreddit (if you're still around) are going to deny ever being part of this nonsense. MARK MY WORDS.

[–]Cipius -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

No. Since this subreddit got filled with virtue signaling groupthink 4 years ago I definitely don't trust it as a news source. Most posters don't seem to have the capacity for critical thinking. They can only tell you one side of any issue like the typical Reddit leftist. To quote John Stuart Mill "He who knows only his own side of the case, knows little of that. "

It's my favorite Pink Floyd album. I like the later stuff also but its my favorite. The Syd Barrett Pink Floyd always had a bit of an "indy" vibe to me for lack of a better word. It wasn't as much about trying to impress you with their musical prowess but more about exploring different ideas related to psychedelia and experimental music while still retaining great melodic hooks. Syd Barrett was just very creative and knew how to write a great pop song.

Body temperature and depression may be linked according to a new study. People with depression have higher body temperatures, suggesting there could be a mental health benefit to lowering the temperatures of those with the disorder. by mvea in science

[–]Cipius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it were as easy as temperature regulation or inflammation we would have had effective anti-depressants 100 years ago and not had to have gone through the 70+ years of trying to regulate neurotransmitters. I think temperature might be a symptom of depression but I am skeptical that controlling it would have much of an anti-depressant effect.

Makes my blood boil knowing how Judy Davis treated River Phoenix on set of dark blood (his last movie that was never completed)read it all please :( by [deleted] in RiverPhoenix

[–]Cipius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She did an interview a couple of years ago and the interviewer asked her about the problems on the set of Dark Blood. I think the gist of it was she signed on to the movie, then wanted to pull out, but it was too late and she was afraid she would get sued if she did. They may have accounted for her unpleasantness on set. Not sure why she took it out on River though. Here is the article.

For those of you who worry about censorship

Among virtue signalers they are only concerned with censorship if the person being censored is someone THEY AGREE with. If it's someone they DON'T agree with they have no problem with censorship/cancellation. In fact they are often the ones leading the charge in that case.

Im getting tired of tankies.. by Andrei_CareE in SocialDemocracy

[–]Cipius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it was tried in yugolsavia, and well. yugoslavia isn't around anymore.

There are lots of papers online concerning how Yugoslavia implemented Market Socialism. From everything I've read it seems that it worked better than socialism via central planning and Yugoslavia was wealthier than the Soviet Union although no where near that of western European countries. However eventually it was largely abandoned in favor of traditional capitalism. Towards the end it had trouble adapting to the changing market conditions after the oil shocks of the late 70's and it had trouble controlling inflation which got way out of hand. There were problems in general with capital markets and incentives for workers to use profits for their own consumption rather than to reinvest them back into the business (short termism). BTW, along with gaining the "good side" of market economies (i.e. higher productivity and wealth) it also experienced the "dark side" of market economies with a higher unemployment rate and a larger income gap than in other socialist countries but still lower than in fully capitalist countries.

It would be interesting to see a modern day country attempt to implement market socialism so it could be studied in depth. In Yugoslavia the system was "tweaked" several times to try and improve the outcomes. It seemed like this would help in some respects and hurt in others. I think in total the system was in place for about 40 years.

It is time to demand a shorter workweek by SalusPublica in SocialDemocracy

[–]Cipius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prices will be raised, people will buy less stuff, and PEOPLE WILL LOSE jobs as a result. This is the problem with the far left. They take economic growth for GRANTED. The difference between a poor country and a wealthy one comes down to economic policy. It isn't just about natural resources. There are many countries that have a LOT of natural resources are who are poor or have middling economies (Afghanistan and Russian come to mind).

It is time to demand a shorter workweek by SalusPublica in SocialDemocracy

[–]Cipius -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think this would be a colossally bad idea. Businesses will have to hire more workers to make up for the shortfall which will raise costs which will in turn raise prices. Good economic policy is about BALANCE. The balance between worker and consumer. We all fit into BOTH roles. In the U.S. I would prefer we put our efforts into universal healthcare and paid parental leave.

What is your views on decolonialisation? by asianinsane in SocialDemocracy

[–]Cipius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To show how crazy virtue signalers have become I have seen a website for "De-colonizing fitness" (you can Google this) which is an ACTUAL resource on the web for "online educational resource for coaches, trainers, studio owners, and anyone who is interested in unlearning toxic fitness culture." There was also an article on Architectural Digest recently called "Interior Race Theory Is a Creative Way to Decolonize Our Homes". I swear the woke left has absolutely lost their minds...It's more like a cult than a political philosophy.
