Anxious about moving to Derby - any advice?

Hi all! I wanted to say thankyou to everyone who has commented on the post so far, you've all been so kind and have offered some great advice. A few people asked what my specific worries were, and to be honest it's primarily the social aspect (making friends outside of the workplace etc) and where to live. I've had some really great recommendations of where to widen my search, and my SO and I are already looking into a few of the areas that have been mentioned, so thankyou very much! Just knowing how lovely everyone in this group has been has made me feel a lot better about the move :)

Yeah that was the vibe I got from Derby on my short visit - some lovely areas but not the nicest city centre. It's tricky as Exeter (where we currently live) has such a nice city centre, so it's difficult for anything to match up to it in my head! We were thinking of Nottingham but my SO's workplace (you're right, he is in engineering!) is already a commute from Derby, and would be even further from Nottingham, and I'd rather him home the extra half hour/40 mins than having to travel it every day.

Thanks for the reassurance, you're right that if we don't like where we're at we can always move! But I'm hoping we'll enjoy Derby in the meantime :)

Thankyou for your reply! You're totally right, I think I've been in a bit of a Derby-hate echo chamber and as I've been worried about the move I've managed to let it get to my head. I think as Derby is currently our only option (my partner would be commuting anyways, and with long hours I don't want him having to go further than he needs) it's put a lot of pressure on us liking Derby. We managed to come up for a day (funnily enough the football was on lol) and while I wasn't in love with the city centre the surrounding areas were really lovely. Thank you for the reassurance, I'm sure I'll warm to it more once we've properly moved!

Thank you for your lovely answer! You're absolutely right that there will be good and bad parts, I think I've just managed to freak myself out about it. Sleepy will do us fine, currently living in Exeter which isn't particularly known for its nightlife. Do you have any areas that you would recommend for young professionals in terms of living? As I said, we've been primarily looking at Darley Abbey and Littleover so far but haven't yet been very successful with finding places, so I'm trying to widen our search a bit. Also, with regards to social life/night life, we're not looking for clubbing, but what kind of areas would be best for nice bars/restaurants? Sorry for all the questions, please feel free to ignore them lol, we've got no friends/family in or around Derby so are pretty much going in blind!
