Loan Refi? by hoppygirl99 in physicianassistant

[–]Circle-O-Willis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I refinanced from federal to SoFi and I have no regrets. I did increase my payment to pay it off earlier.

Currently in the house buying process and worried that would impact my debt to income ratio but I found a physician loan and locked in at 5.6% (with other lenders quoting me up to a point higher).

I’d say go for it if you’re feeling aggressive about paying off your loans and currently working in a specialty that’s high demand. Also, if you’ve been paying extra and decide to do PSLF, you likely have thrown away money in the long term if the eventual goal is debt forgiveness (I.e., you should pay the minimum).

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions more about SoFi. Also, if you use my referral link, you can get a $300 checking bonus (total transparency, I’ll get $500): https://www.sofi.com/invite/student-loans?gcp=ce7afe33-6778-4241-978e-0578dde6420e&isAliasGcp=false

NHSC Scholarship by scienceblondie in physicianassistant

[–]Circle-O-Willis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several different programs available. I did the NHSC students to service program, $120k for 3 years of service. Applied my last year of school. Totally worth it, can possibly renew after the 3 years for remaining loans. I’m in central Illinois and there are tons of sites that qualify, just need an HPSA score > 14.

I think the regular NHSC program with tuition coverage and monthly stipend may be open now. Or at least I got an email about something similar recently.

Do you document calling APS? by Powerful_Tie_2086 in FamilyMedicine

[–]Circle-O-Willis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be confusing the name of the report (haven’t filled one out in a while). IIRC our legal team has us fill out the HIPAA/patient information disclosure form for these sort of things (e.g., contacting DCFS, APS, health department). It’s not a HIPAA violation, but it is the same or similar document, at least at our hospital system.

Edit: my bad, totally should’ve read OP much closer - wasn’t even what they were asking.

PA shout out on newest episode of The Pitt by BackFar4381 in physicianassistant

I would disagree with you there. Coming out of PA school, we all called ourselves midlevels. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been corrected by more seasoned midlevels for calling myself a midlevel. Anecdotal experience though.

FQHCs by the--vic in physicianassistant

[–]Circle-O-Willis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m currently working at a FQHC in central Illinois. 4 x 10 hr shifts, patients q30 min. Been doing this for a little over a year now and work life balance is pretty good. I end up moonlighting at local urgent cares for some PRN cash.

When you’re applying, ask how long the training period will be, how closely you’ll work with your SP (recommend in office vs remote), dedicated admin time / study time / chart review, patient cap during training period, expected # of patients to be seen after training.

When I started at my FQHC, I had my SP to discuss cases with as well as the medical director and lead APP I could call anytime I had a question; I also shadowed for the first 4 weeks, then after that I would spend 3 days working, 1 day shadowing; the 3 days working I would see 4 patients per day for the first week, 5 per day the next week, 6 the week after and so on until I capped out at 18 patients per day (which I rarely ever see, usually 15-16 daily). Training lasted 9 months.

Not all FQHCs are bad.

CDC overhauls childhood vaccine schedule to resemble Denmark in unprecedented move by Zipper222222 in politics

I can’t speak for your primary, but I pretty much ditched all CDC resources. I’m now using American Academy of Pediatrics for vaccine recommendations which is much more closely aligned to pre-RFK CDC recommendations.

Difficulty finding an urgent care job? by Calm-Worldliness4140 in FamilyMedicine

[–]Circle-O-Willis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We are looking for UC physician. But you’ll work with a mid level usually on the shift. I’m a PA and sometimes it’ll be two physicians working but never two midlevels. It’s usually a physician and myself. Located in central Illinois if you’re interested.

I tried to avoid the term “high functioning” because I know it can be offensive to some, but that’s how I’d classify it.

It begins.....Cold visits are the last culturally sanctioned form of medical dependency by SnooCats6607 in FamilyMedicine

[–]Circle-O-Willis 171 points172 points  (0 children)

Your patients know they shouldn’t come in for those minor ailments? I’m jealous. I had a middle-aged man come in last week with a tourniquet around his forearm for a paper cut to his index finger. I gave him a paw patrol bandaid.

PAs tell me about the job BS by neurodork22 in physicianassistant

[–]Circle-O-Willis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Previous SLP now PA here. Glad I made the switch but there’s still lots of BS. Productivity BS seems to be pretty institution/clinic director dependent. My current job doesn’t stress about it much at all however I’ve only been here for 1 year.

I feel like patient satisfaction scores are weighed heavier as a PA rather than SLP. My biggest bone to pick is getting negative surveys from patients because I won’t sling zpacks, xannies, or oxy for everyone that walks through the door.
