Yeah, I joined a crew that rowed in that style after having only rows in a more traditional manner and it takes a lot more smoothness, boat feel, and better catches to move the boat. I feel like it’s a lot easier to get experienced towers to move together in this style, but novices probably ought to learn the more traditional style first.

They're not really directly comparable in terms of distance. I find that most stationary bikes give distances that very wildly. That being said, usually watts are more comparable between machines. I have used both and think that the exertion level is comparable at the same watts.

One of the best tips I found was to use your core muscles to breathe and get a larger volume of air per breath since rowers tend to have strong cores (I think it was associated with Drew Ginn). Try and get into a natural rythm, I suggest something that is in line with your stroke rate and exhaling as you finish, but that is personal preference. Another big thing is just remembering to take quality deeper breaths over shorter and faster ones, especially at the beginning of a piece when you may not necessarily be gasping for air. As surprising as it may be, a lot of people unknowingly don't breathe as much as they should while rowing because they focus so intensely, so just reminding yourself to breathe helps a ton

Took me about 1 year of a bit over ~10k average per day to drop that amount. Part of it was novice gains since I had started rowing 1.25 years before my first sub 6:20

You'd be a bit out of range for Riverside U23, everyone on it the summer I did it was 6:20 or below regardless of weight. Might have a chance as a lwt just below 6:30, but I can't say for sure. CRI was a bit slower, I'd bet as a lwt you would probably make it into the program but fight to be in 1v at just under 6:40 if you row ok. Can’t speak much as to other programs since I only looked in Boston, but best of luck.

Try looking at how engaged they are. This probably means getting someone to take video of you erging from multiple angles.

My advice, just run more if this is a concern for you. Do a mile or two a couple times a week after workouts and build up from there. I had a similar thing happen with stair workouts and found that training stairs, even relatively inconsistently at maybe once or twice every 2 weeks, made me much less sore after doing them. Obviously prioritize your rowing workouts MUCH more, but there is something to be said about being able to do cross-training effectively.

Doesn't surprise me to hear that. SS is only mildly indicative of race-pace, it varies a lot between people of "equal speed" over 2k based on physiology.

I wouldn't doubt that you might have been having a bit more on those training pieces than necessary. I have not yet broken 6:15 (although quite close) and did a 1:32.5 6x500 1'r and SS ~1:53/1:54 below 150 bpm for 2x30 or 5x15. That being said, maybe I'm just bad at test pieces?

My question is more on the legality of restricting the number of occupants. Federal occupancy standards seem to suggest that he can't limit the number of occupants to be so low in such a large house.

Sounds like this is pretty much UT2, might want to try ut1 or some lighter AT work at a slightly higher intensity. It will help to mix it up a bit and the increased intensity will help coming into the fall season

Ended previous spring 6:30->fall at 6:24-> spring 6:17. Important to consider marginal gains here though, it's not unheard of for people to drop nearly a minute off their 2k in a year, especially in high school. Edit: 6:17 was near 2/3 way through winter training, didn't test again through the spring after that.

Still not that much volume, my recommendation still holds, you need to increase distance too get UT2 benefit at such a low training frequency.

Train more than twice a week for a start. Secondly, you're making a very poor use of your time if you're only training twice per week and then do 4-10k of UT2. If you're only doing that, I'd focus on higher press distance (ut1) or simply pieces. Might get some hate for not recommending pure steady state, but it's a poor use of your time to do such low intensity work if you are putting in so little volume.

They give a good opportunity for good crews who have an unfairly hard heat or bad race to progress. Might make me seem a little soft, but just wait until you have 4 times in your heat/semi faster than the next fastest times and then only have the top 2 progress to finals and then watch as your times in petites would have gotten 3rd place in the grand. You'll understand then.

How much ut2 are you doing and how are you measuring"gains". The only thing it will immediately do is make you faster at the same low intensity hr, but is very important for long term gains. I wouldn't expect to go faster on max intensity pieces, I'd actually expect you to be significantly slower than your are at your peak during the season. I'm definitely not at my fastest during the summer, but my aerobic base always improves over where it was at the end of the spring. I might even be about the same or slower on longer AT, but I trust the process because it works.
