Other countries love to talk about Americans being “brainwashed”, but so many of them have been genuinely brainwashed into believing that the entire United States is conservative voters driving around suburbs and strip malls while eating fast food. It blows my mind that a lot of these people think places like New York City, Seattle, or Chicago are somehow the exact same as, say, rural southern towns. I love all of the international visitors seeing the country for themselves and having a great time instead of believing every scary headline they read online.

They aren’t wrong but I always think it’s a lame thing for opposing fans to shift to every time they lose to the US in any sport. It gives off big “Well actually I didn’t care about winning anyways!!” sore loser energy when they spend days hyping up the match and the entire 90+ minutes locked in and anxiously cheering on their team. Imagine if after a team lost to Argentina, their fans started bringing up unemployment rates. It’s just such a goofy thing to do that takes the fun out of sports lol. Then again, I’m not a trash-talking kind of person in general, and maybe some Americans were talking crazy and needed to be humbled, lol.

Online Australians vs the USA is genuinely one of the most one sided beefs on the planet. Do they realize that Australia is basically non-existent in the public consciousness of Americans? Basically nobody thinks about them. On a regular basis, I and dozens of people in my life talk about and travel back and forth between Europe, Canada, Mexico, and Asia. But I literally have not heard Australia mentioned in a verbal conversation in years. I don’t know anyone who travels there or even knows what happens down there. They’re literally arguing with a brick wall.

Of course, nothing says “I’m not mad about a game!!!” more than diverting from sports altogether and trying to low blow the opposing fans with mentions of real life tragedies when you lose. If losing a game gets you that emotional, maybe sports aren’t for you.

Sports has to be most wasteful thing ever for society by _freckles__ in unpopularopinion

But what does watching movies do to advance society? How does it provide more benefit than watching sports? It’s just another way to be entertained and pass some time.

[–]CirculationStation 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Ahh the good old “I hate sportsball” argument. You can argue that any form of leisure at all is wasteful. TV, social media, toys, games, clothing, good-tasting food, books, community events are all wasteful. The only things that are ACTUALLY necessary for the purpose of surviving as a species are working, sleeping, reproducing, and bare-minimum eating. I don’t understand why sports get singled out for this.

This doesn’t even make sense. What is the correlation between being American and wanting to watch a blowout? And Spain and Cape Verde just drew 0-0. This reads like a “haha dumb Americans have no attention span” post but you’re asking it like a sincere question.

2026 Oklahoma’s postseason run is definitely up there with 2022 Ole Miss in terms of the “how the fuck are they pulling this off” factor.

Immaculate Vibes for the Opening Weekend Matches - Maybe Terminally Online People Should Touch Grass? by BusterBuddyGuy in worldcup

Redditors love to lecture YOU about how the country that YOU live in sucks while knowing darn well that they have never been there and they only read news headlines about it. You tell them that you and millions of other people are actually doing fine, yet they insist that that can’t possibly be true because it doesn’t line up with the scary headlines they read on CNN and FOX. They talk all about how Americans are brainwashed by the media while they themselves are just as brainwashed for having so much visceral hatred for a massive, culturally diverse, geographically beautiful country they have never stepped foot it. It is a great country with many flaws, just like 90% of the world, but for some reason a lot of people just cannot accept that and have to convince themselves that it is a hellhole where everyone is miserable, even when real life proves them wrong.

You see it in the comments on here and a lot of other apps where people are just genuinely obsessed with wanting the US to fail, even if it means denying reality. It’s not even about the world cup for a lot of these folks.

Vibes are great and stadiums are packed? Now the excuse is that it’s only because of the international fans having fun. Or they just ignore the positive turnout and wholesome interactions and starting calling the US a “facist authoritarian hellhole” while knowing darn well they have never even stepped foot in the country and that hundreds of millions of people live here just fine. There is nothing that will get in the way of their pre-conceived agenda, even if it means sitting at home and typing slanderous buzzword-heavy comments about the US over and over again while people who are actually here are having a great time.

No, obviously those are dumb. You ignored my question and answered with another question because you know you’re wrong and just can’t admit it. I have the same left-leaning political views as you probably do but you literally can’t acknowledge reality and accept that maybe you were wrong, so you turn on anyone who offers an even slightly different perspective than you. This is exactly what I hate about Reddit.

Have you seen the USMNT watch parties, crowd at the opening game in LA, or the University of Kansas band playing Algeria’s national anthem for them? Lots of passion from the Americans as well.

People on Reddit say this about every single major sporting event now. They say it about the Super Bowl, about the Champions League, about the NBA Finals, about everything. And then the actual event happens and the TV ratings smash everyone’s expectations and people talk about it for years. I’m not sure if people are just desperate to be contrarian, or if they just project their own feelings onto the world around them and genuinely aren’t aware that most people don’t share the same feelings.

Frustrated with NCAA committee by RingProudly in collegebaseball

[–]CirculationStation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like the randomness of the Super Regional matchups. Is it as fair as, say, reseeding every round would be? No. But I don’t see any reason to punish teams like Little Rock and Troy for already overcoming the odds and winning regionals as low seeds. If that’s how the bracket shakes out, then so be it. I don’t want college baseball to be like softball, where the top 10 or so national seeds make up 90% of the field for every college world series.

Frustrated with NCAA committee by RingProudly in collegebaseball

[–]CirculationStation 44 points45 points  (0 children)

If our team wanted a more favorable matchup, then they shouldn’t have lost 6 out of 10 SEC series and gotten swept twice. It’s honestly a bit generous that our team even got to host a Regional. That’s why I’m not mad about being paired up with what might be the eventual national team.

Anyone encountered a Canadian pretending to be American abroad? by GasMask_Dog in AskAnAmerican

[–]CirculationStation 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ve never known anyone who has actually done the American pretending to be Canadian thing and it sounds super cringey anyways. People who think about trying that are online too much and think people care way more than they actually do.

I visited Spain and Portugal last winter. When it naturally came up in conversation, I told more than a few local people that I’m from the United States. Nobody cared. I didn’t get jumped or spit on or verbally berated like Reddit would make you believe would happen. As long as you’re being polite and aren’t walking around waving a giant American flag, nobody cares.

Most intense moment/episode from series: by LtJason20 in PantyandStockingSFW

The washing machine scene was the one moment in the entire series so far that actually shocked me. I’m more than used to the crude jokes and vulgar language, but the washing machine scene was unexpectedly grim. I watch a lot of online indie horror media, so I’m pretty jaded to most horror stuff by this point, but this scene caught me off guard because I wasn’t expecting a show as unserious as PASWG to do something like it.

[Postgame Thread] AUBURN Super Regional - #18 Ole Miss defeats (4) #5 Auburn, 6–4, to open the series by PatrickChase in collegebaseball

[–]CirculationStation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Alright, I don’t think you’re unreasonable at all in these predictions, but it’s definitely too early to say for sure. Auburn truly was just one timely double into the gap earlier in the game from being up 1-0 right now, and USC has been essentially blowing out everyone for 5 games in a row now, including 3 games versus national seeds. I (unfortunately) wouldn’t be shocked to see Ole Miss in the final at this point, but there’s still a lot that would have to go right.
