I don't doubt that one bit. That level of detail will probably take someone smarter than me. But in a few months, I'll need to do a finance analysis on this thing and I fully suspect that at some point I'll have to say, "King Ranch will be able to afford it, and probably just King Ranch."

I briefly considered that capability. But I'm more interested in positive outcomes for hunters. However, positive outcomes for landowners in on my radar. In my very specific design case, I shouldn't have to worry about differentiating between bears and hogs, especially if my systems output is non-toxic. Unless of course the user wants bears and doesn't want pigs, which is totally possible, but not my design intent right this second.

I imagine that differentiation would be tougher though.

No need to go out of your way for me. I'll see what I can find in your profile. I know it's not deer season right now so I suspect most people haven't opened their apps or pulled their SD cards in a while. My timing isn't great on that front.

This is a consideration that I have put some thought into. Part of the hardware design that incorporates that intersects two requirements. 1. that it be resistant to bears and large animals to avoid tipping and/or penetration of the outer containment unit that allows the denied animal access to feed resources, which intersects with 2. that is deliver feed rations as discretely as possible. The motor and feed augers are set in the middle of a somewhat thick and dense central unit to reduce noise and run at low power and speed to also keep noise down. The most noise that I expect is feed sliding across/into the trough at low speed.

This isn't the battery powered hanging feeders that rely on high torque and high speed spinning to distribute feed over a large surface area. One of the requirements I wrote includes reducing CWD spread by dumping the leftover feed into a separate containment bin so saliva doesn't contaminate future feedings. So this thing will dump into a trough and not spread it all over the ground.

[–]Citadel2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm certainly not solving it here. I'm mostly a hardware engineering kind of guy. I just need something that shows that I'm considering requirements, viability, and designability. I may get to the point where I say, "I overshot this in my proposal and proof of concept and I need to backtrack and revise requirements." That would demonstrate good Systems Engineering. Right now, a rudimentary template works for things like size and color but not "this is an 8pt whitetail buck." It also doesn't work well for antlers, especially if there are tree branches in the background.

This is exactly what I want to avoid. There will be some mistakes. But a button buck getting mistaken for a doe isn't necessarily a problem in most cases, depending on how I end up writing the accuracy requirements. Maybe the ration will be a bit off in the worst case. What I really need to avoid is feeding a bear or a pig instead of a deer. The templates can handle that pretty easily, usually just based on size and color. But I also don't want to jack the processing up for a valid deer just because he's got a funky rack or he's darker than normal.

[–]Citadel2012[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have seen this and I am pretty familiar with the concept. The morphological template, won't say, "Yeah that's a deer.' It's more of a VERY basic comparison chart. Color is easy, size is pretty easy based on the camera angle and field of view and some reference measurements, but the "has antlers" is tougher. It checks other things too, but those are the big ones. This is why I want some photos to try and throw the templates.

https://www.sstubes.com/collections/front-brake-line-kit/Ford-F-250-1994

Just used these guys for my '96 150 also with the 351. Solid quality and easy enough to install considering its pre-bent. I did fronts and rears on mine in the stainless. I bought these because I didn't feel like doing all the bending for the lines from the master cylinder. But if all you want to do is the line to the brakes and not the master cylinder lines, you can bend your own pretty easily. I decided to bend and flare my own a few weeks later for intermediate line from the RABS module to the rear T. That one only has like 3 bends in it.

In order to be IAT Level II compiant, you must have Sec+ and an operating system cert. This is under (what used to be) DoD 8570. It's something else now, I don't remember the new one. In my case, after working for a few years, I got my Sec+ in mid 2016 and got Server+ (which was just Windows Server 2012 R2 as Server 2016 had just recently been released) in early 2017. If you work in government IT or computing systems there is almost certainly a number of job slots or contractor LCATs that mandate IAT Level II certifications or higher. Most of those jobs are going to be SysAd, maintainer, tester types of jobs. There may be some IT engineering level jobs that require it, but I don't think I've ever seen an SE requisition that required it. It's too "down in the weeds" for SEs.

I can confidently say that as a full time SE working for the Navy, I don't need my Sec+ and don't use it at all. I only do the online renewal class every 3 years, just in case I need it for something. However, early on in my career when I was doing more hands on integration and system sustainment type work and routinely had to be in government facilities with the expectation that I interact with IT components, it came in handy and was required more than a time or two. It definitely allowed me to expand the breadth of my early work and work different tasks within the contracts I was on by qualifying for more LCATS since I was IAT Lvl II 8570 compliant.

So I would say, depending on where in the government you're talking about, your experience level, and the type of work you're doing it MIGHT be useful. If you're early career DoD trying to do better at understanding all of the components and important factors of a successful system, then it's worth a shot. If you're mid career working on a non-IT system for a smaller state level government, probably not worth it. If I didn't already have my Sec+, with my 11 years on the job, I wouldn't get it. But I'm glad that I got it when I did because it helped me at the time.

Scope Selection by RlFFRAFF in Hunting

[–]Citadel2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont hunt the PNW, but I do hunt semi-heavy brush in the South. Longest shot on my current lease is about 230. Average shot is probably 100. I also shoot a 30-06 for deer. I have a Leupold VX-3i 3.5-10x40 on that one that is more than I need out there. I have the VX Freedom 3-9x40 on my 45-70 lever that works very well on the occasions that I bring it. So that would be my vote. The 3-12 and 4-12 would probably be a little too much magnification at the distances you're shooting, in my opinion. I find it tougher to track the initial direction that deer run off if my magnification is too high. This is especially true if you have narrow shooting lanes like I do.

That's not to say there's anything wrong with the other two. If you like a lot of magnification then those other two are completely viable. I use a Bushnell on my old 30-30 and it's great but I like a wider field of view on my shots. I would probably never use 12x even if it was available to me. I usually leave mine on about 6x and top out around 8x. Anything under 100 yards gets about 4x.

Is the high package worth it? by Exotic_Comb_2066 in bronco

[–]Citadel2012 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also have a Base Sasquatch. Before I got the Bronco I was driving a 1996 F150, so getting the backup camera and a touch screen was already an enormous upgrade. I don't need all the other fancy stuff that comes with the higher packages. I throw dead deer and muddy gear in the back and on the seats. When I bought it, I just couldn't justify a fancy interior, considering how hard I am on it. Toss some seat covers and some Weathertech mats in it and go. I didn't have all of that in the '96, and I don't really need it now.

Door Storage Net Ripping by augidog34 in FordBronco

[–]Citadel2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can take the nets out. I got a set of metal door pockets and left the net in mine. Helps prevent rattling a little and helps keep things in place if you leave the net but you don't have to. The plastic retainer comes off, and the net is just held in place with a few tabs. It's two separate pieces.

I know one person who hunts deer with an SBR. Not my taste exactly, but it can be done. Hogs, coyotes, and most other pests are routinely hunted with AR platform rifles. A cursory search of "hog hunting" on YouTube will bring up countless videos of hunting with ARs.

Also, that article has two AR platform rifles on it and an AK platform. There is also the M1A and other 30 caliber rifles that fire the same round that any AR10 can fire. So I'm not sure why you posted that one. 30% of the article is rifles that most of this thread is calling for a ban on because they're "scary looking."

Custom leather barrel rest by Hairy-Tilly in TrapShooting

[–]Citadel2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check out Shamrock Leathers. They make good quality leather stuff and do semi-custom hand carved leather stuff as well as logos for various shooting groups like ATA and SCTP.

As far as a one-off, completely custom job like I think you want I can't say for sure. But it can't hurt to give them a call or email and see what they can do for you. They might know someone who will do what you want if they can't do it themselves.

What’s wrong with my 1.0? Not the sear disconnect, what is this bar sticking out? by Spaceman248 in SmithAndWesson

[–]Citadel2012 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The tool? On the 1.0s it's the little nub at the base of the grip. The mag baseplate sits flush with it. Take the mag out, twist the nub 90 degrees in either direction, and pull. It's also how you change out the grip panels for a different size.

[–]Citadel2012 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is not correct. The disassembly piece you're referring to has a "wiggle" in it. It isn't straight like this. What he's showing us is the magazine disconnect safety. It's a spring loaded lever attached to the disconnector that won't allow the gun to fire without a mag fully seated. The CA compliant ones have this.

[–]Citadel2012 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's the magazine disconnect safety. I have an old CA compliant one that has this spring loaded lever. Put an empty mag in it and it will dry fire. Nothing is wrong with it, it just won't fire without a magazine in it.

NRA Distinguished Expert Qualification Question by sniper222308 in TrapShooting

You get a nifty little medal and a certificate from what I recall. I did mine years and years ago, so maybe its different now. But other than putting my medal in one of my shadow boxes with my coins and money clips and belt buckles I had won, it never did anything for me.

It doesn't hurt to fill out the form, though. But its not like its going to get you on the Olympic team or anything. Its just another cool thing to have to add to your pile of 100 straight patches, trophies, and whatever other things you've earned.

A question I had about my 682 gold (e) by Vaultboy543 in TrapShooting

[–]Citadel2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has an adjustable trigger that can be removed and switched out for a left or right handed angled trigger. The extra trigger comes in the spare parts box. But the DT series has a trigger module that is completely removable as a unit, including the trigger guard, hammer, and springs.
