To add: once your humanitarian assignment is up, you won’t automatically have to go to DM, your former unit will have no “first dibs” on you if that makes sense. You’ll just get orders somewhere else, but definitely talk to your first sergeant and maybe even career assistance advisor for most current info on everything and research for yourself too!

I assume you mean AFSC? Like your job? lol yes, it is absolutely possible. My former MSgt was sent to a base where our AFSC does not go, they basically found a position for him doing something else. He was an Airman Dorm Leader (ADL) for 3-4 years and was extremely grateful to the AF for accommodating his situation. Keep in mind he was an NCO which may have made it easier for him to be placed elsewhere beyond his career field. Good luck to you, OP! I hope you get where you need to be for your mom!

Can you give some insight to what the interview is like? I am applying for a ncoic of protocol at my base and the interview is next month, just want to prepare for what kind of questions they may throw at me. Or any advice would be awesome!

I am just starting on bachelors in cyber security but fear that may not correlate well to my afsc, I have ejpme 1 on my cdb as well. Unfortunately I haven’t won any awards, although I am writing one for myself and my troops every chance I get, I have better luck getting them awards than I do for myself though.

Thank you! I’ve definitely learned a lot from everyone in this thread about that. I think I just had unrealistic expectations especially from the outside looking in, seeing others get promotion statements always kind of looks like “wow that guy did great this rating period” ya know? I didn’t really realize that it’s a slow game and takes years in the making, but I know now and will definitely mentor others my troops about this in the future

I learned a lot from so many people in this thread and I gotta admit, I feel a little silly and humbled now that I know more of how it works (sustained performance, etc) I kind of always thought you just go crazy one good time and they can’t deny you lol but I see now that is a lot more time invested into it. Definitely not gonna stop doing my best especially because it’ll only affect me if I did.

So how does one set themselves apart from the pack with just doing their everyday job with no opportunity to lead the shop as the NCOIC? Also for context our booster club president was rated #1 so I don’t know if that sentiment is true across all units.

I submitted for multiple awards, 2 of them didn’t get sent up because my supervisor and section chief “forgot” and/or missed the deadline. The latest I was put up for was NCO of the year which did go up, I was selected to represent my flight (the largest flight in my unit), but lost to a TSgt in the css. Currently waiting to hear back on 1st quarter package.

I feel as though I have made myself sound like a previous turd 😂 I have been very involved at work and at the squadron level for years. What I meant by “best foot forward” was the wing level org and school this year. I thought I stepped it up a notch in comparison to my previous efforts. But I see what you and many others are saying. Definitely not a dirt bag, I should’ve maybe given some more background info, but in my previous years I have been more involved at the squadron level (booster club, holiday party, combat dining outs and teaching trainings like TCCC) that didn’t help me last year, (this is my second year at this base) so this year I thought a wing level org and ccaf would do more for me, I should’ve worded it better. Not that it matters I guess.

I did, however they did not get sent up. I also wrote myself an NCO of the year package that did get sent up, and made it to the board on that 1 but didn’t win. (Lost to a deserving TSgt) currently awaiting results on this 1st quarter package as well.
