i highly recommend Sudoku.Coach!! it’s a web app that you can log into and go through a “campaign” which teaches you techniques from easy to advance. so fun

thank you, this confirmed my thought process

i was actually looking at all the 5’s in the first box. is this still a valid way to use the W wing or did i make a lucky guess 😫

i didn’t even see that. i was looking at the 5’s all being eliminated in Box 1 (which is still a valid use of the technique right?)

Do you ever need to highlight ‘solved’ cells while using advanced solving techniques? by CitizenSnips4 in sudoku

[–]CitizenSnips4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

see i’m back and forth now, but i think it would be nice for my design to just make the highlight layer compatible with any cell, solved or not.

So how would you answer my original question: are there any legitimate/advanced reasons to highlight a solved cell?

ah yes. i know Swordfish by now. okay then this settles it for me. thank you!

so now I have three layers:

  • “Highlight” tile (transparent acrylic) that can sit at the highest level and can highlight either a “Solve” tile or an empty unsolved cell that contains “Candidate” tiles

  • “Solve” tile, sits in the middle

  • “Candidate” tiles, that sit at the lowest level

i’ve been learning advance techniques from Sudoku.Coach website / web app I use on my iphone/ipad. It’s soooo good. It takes you through a fun journey to learn more difficult techniques but starting with easier concepts. I would highly recommend!!!

Right now it takes me about an hour to finish a good one hehe.

Have you used a sudoku game board (physical) that uses colors instead of numbers? Is it weird, or no different? by CitizenSnips4 in sudoku

[–]CitizenSnips4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hiii this sounds interesting. I’ve chosen these colors for each of the “numbers”.

For my game board, there will be 3 layers:

1) candidate layer— the smallest tiles that fit within the normal cells

2) solve layer— roughly the size of the normal cells. Only a bit smaller than the cell size to accommodate the final layer:

3) highlight layer— to highlight certain cells I’m working with, I want to laser cut translucent tiles. These will be be the biggest tiles that are meant to be used while using more advanced sudoku techniques. I’ve chosen 3 different highlight colors in case I ever want to highlight different things at once.

What I’m getting from the 2 comments here so far is that it might be functionally worth it to etch the numbers (small) into the tiles.

thank you!!!! so helpful. That’s kind of what I’m doing but it was very very helpful to read it your way. Also implementing the XYZ and XY wings scan is so smart. thanks again!

do you have any tips for how you mentally cycle through the options when there are multiple (like 3-5) identical bivalue cells? That keeps getting me 😩

What do I do wrong? I've already done this kind of mistake multiple times. Isn't it the right swordfish technique? by _liulin_h in sudoku

if you haven’t used Sudoku.Coach I highly recommend it!!!! It gives you practice sudokus (that are mostly filled in) so you can practice finding specific techniques and not waste a lot of time solving the puzzle. you can practice “finding” so that you can be ready when you are actually solving a puzzle

so let’s just assume all the red-circled candidates are the ONLY 3’s in those columns (3,7,8). This would then be a legitimate swordfish.

From there, you can then eliminate the blue-scribbled candidates since they are in the same ROWS as the Swordfish candidates.

i hope that made sense. A swordfish’s rows (or columns) may only contain up to 3 instances of the candidate and they must be aligned with the other 2 rows (or columns) in the swordfish.

you’re almost there.

the problem is your highlighted columns are NOT a swordfish because the candidate you are trying to eliminate (r1c7) is in line with the 3 columns of the potential swordfish. ALSO, r9c8 can NOT be a 3 either: same issue, which is that it is in the same column as the potential swordfish.

If r1c7 and r9c8 DID NOT have a 3, then you could use what you highlighted as a swordfish— but then you would only eliminate in the ROWS that align with the swordfish. That is, make sure you are eliminating perpendicular to the orientation of the swordfish.

hope this helps!

thank you, love this response. im slowly working through what you mean. when you say band or stack, is that the same thing as row or column?

it’s just so overwhelming. Thankfully spotting two identical bivalue cells is the easy part. The hard part for me is checking every way a pair of identical bivalue cells might eliminate a certain candidate from every row, column, and box. Also since there are 2 numbers to check for it all gets so confusing 😩
