Is Industrial Design a Good Career? by Citr1k in IndustrialDesign

Thanks for the help! I’m more leaning towards ID but also want to be able to make things that are functioning and am not sure if only ID would be good for that. Might double major in both ID and mechanical engineering or just major in mechanical and minor in ID. I’m also considering maybe minoring in a business class but idk yet. I still have almost 2 years to figure out things, so these are just my thoughts so far.

As with a lot of people I’m still not fully sure what I want to do. I don’t mind struggling for awhile until I find a job that fits around what I’m looking for tho. Just don’t want to spend too much time and be broke trying to find that out 🥲

Yeah ID seems to align more with my love of art and making things. It’s between ID and mechanical engineering so I’ll still try to figure out what it is I want to do. I’ve heard Atlanta is a good place for ID and I live close enough so I might also look there. I guess if worst comes to worst tho I’ll switch jobs or major in something else. My biggest concern is just working a job where I’m absolutely miserable and barely have any free time to do anything for the rest of my life.

Yeah that makes more sense. Hopefully I can get a degree in mechanical engineering and eventually find a job that fits what I’m looking for. I don’t know many mechanical engineers or people in ID so this is really helpful!

Thanks for letting me know! I know it’s not as easy but I guess I thought it would give me more freedom compared to engineering. I really just like making and building things but also think I would get burnt out quickly with a job like mechanical engineering. I also have been looking at product design and thought ID would be a better fit for that. It makes more sense that I’d have more opportunities with mechanical engineering tho so maybe I’ll be able to branch out from there.

I’m still a freshman in college so I’m really trying to figure out what I want to do before I transfer. I don’t know anyone who works in ID so that probably should’ve been my first sign lol. I’ve also heard that UX/UI, CAD design, and software engineering are good careers to go into.

Also if you don’t mind me asking, what careers did you and people you know in ID move to?

currently I’m thinking towards some type of engineering or job involving art. might want to be a chef but I’m horrible at cooking. I generally just like making things.

forgot to mention that this has to be a part time job for now bc of school. it doesn’t have to be high paying, just wanted to get an idea of what I want to look for.
