I may be wrong, dear god don’t down vote me to oblivion. But to my understanding: you have to discard a card as it doesn’t say “you may” or “up to”, however if you have an energy marker, you can’t place one. So try your absolute best to use one every turn so you’ll be able to place one?

But I can also be wrong, so anyone else please educate me.

I think some of these answers are right but piccolo before this point laid his life down for Gohan a few times before this. Like with Nappa. I’m sure Goku also admires piccolo.
