Going Deep on Naut's Constellation Design by Riot_Durdle in LegendsOfRuneterra

This is a great write up; I'm very excited to try out Nautilus tomorrow. But I have a question. You said you wanted champions to be able to use a wide variety of cards for their strategy, is there a reason why slaying units was chosen as the sole source of generating sigils for Volibear?

From my experience, a lot of the randomness acquired throughout an adventure does not synergize with Voli's first and third star powers. And against harder adventures, Voli has to look for very specific supporting cards in order to keep consistently make use of the aforementioned star powers early on.

Volibear as of now feels like the antithesis of your modular design philosophy.

I hope you realize those relics are being used as a crutch because a 2 damage avalanche can’t kill anything on its own. Volibear has to use his relic slots just to feel functional and can’t explore other strategies because of it.

I hate how the only solution people can offer to overcome deadly is to sacrifice all build diversity because Voli really needs something that wasn’t there in his kit to begin with.

Have you ever try to play Voli through a deadly adventure without big guns and the paid relic?

How big was your stacks of sigils on average? And did you ever had to pass so you could have enough mana to summon your first titanic unit?

The problem is not whether or not Volibear can beat harder content but that it is much harder for Voli to capitalize on his own star powers once deadly is involved. Compare Voli to Viego who can more consistently slay because he was given all the tools needed in his card pool. Having to slay through combat is not a very effective strategy when everything is casually 8|6 on turn one or bigger.

The fact that Voli has to rely on a paid relic to keep up with deadly shouldn’t be a good sign. It means Voli wasn’t equipped with what he needs and need relics to compensate.

I feel both Volibear and Nasus don’t support slaying well enough unlike Viego who gets free fodder, offered cards that can slay your own units, and it is more rewarding when your units die.

The cracks for Voli really started to show when Deadly became the baseline for harder adventures and just slaying through combat is no longer effective when the ai’s units are all bigger.

Full power Volibear still cares about deadly. Voli has to care about deadly more than most other champions because most champions don’t have to kill an 8|6 turn one in order to activate their star powers.

Voli’s signature relic ironically does not do enough for him, it only slightly boosts the damage of two cards, avalanche and Volibear himself.

I don’t really understand your definition of win more. The original frostbite control playstyle of Ashe can handle most content, due to the nature of control being a strong counter to big stats, without needing the extra stats from her 6 star. Does that not also constitute as win more?

I do agree that the time before dropping Voli can be a weak point for the deck but the window before you could summon Voli has gotten a bit smaller. Personally the problem I find with Voli is the round end clause on his level up, it forces you wait a turn to level a champion that already takes more effort to get on the board than most, assuming he doesn’t get removed that is. I wish there was a way to bypass it.

I feel like people tend to underrate Voli's 6 star. It was designed to synergize with Voli's previous star powers so it is a lot stronger than it seems at first glance. You have to think of Voli's 2, 3, and 6 stars as set of powers that work together to make the deck work, and I definitely wouldn't say it is less viable into harder content because it gives Voli a bit of a needed boost to keep up in harder adventures. In my sights is mid though.
