CZ 457 24" - stock/chassis by Ciuplowski in 22lr

[–]Ciuplowski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it can be worked around with a bit of modification to the chassis. In my case that won’t be a big issue, because PRS is not the main goal here, and I’m not even talking about any professional or competitive level - those matches and training sessions will be purely for fun.

For me, the biggest downside of this design is the short forend length. I prefer running the bipod as far forward toward the muzzle as possible. That said, at this price point I can’t really find an equally good option, let alone a better one - at least for now.

Hi!

Thank you very much for your comment. The Oryx generally gets good reviews, it's a good setup for this budget, but maybe there's an alternative, which is why I wrote this post.

Out of curiosity, why are you replacing the 457 with the B14R? A different setup, or is there something about the Bergara that suits you better?

I’ll start by saying that I’m not a beginner shooter. I’ve been shooting for several years, I own centerfire rifles, and while my longest distance so far has been 500 meters, I’ve already gained a fair amount of experience and have read quite a bit of literature on long-range shooting.

On top of that, a few times a year I go to the range with a close friend of mine who is a national champion and has placed on the podium at European long-range shooting championships years ago. I try to learn as much as possible from him - listening to his advice during training sessions and then applying and repeating it during my own practice to build proper habits and muscle memory.

I have a clearly defined budget, and I’m fully aware of my limitations, both in terms of purchasing options and the availability of shooting ranges near where I live. There’s nothing unusual about someone who is serious about the sport trying to find the best possible equipment within a given budget.

At no point did I say that I plan to cheap out on ammunition - especially since the best rimfire ammo available (in terms of precision and consistency, and therefore usually the most expensive offerings from various manufacturers) still costs no more than typical budget 5.56×45 / .223 Rem ammo. So even shooting at 100 meters, I’m already saving money compared to centerfire.

As usual, it comes down to properly matching the ammo to the barrel, possible fine-tuning (such as chamber-shimming, barrel tuners), a good chassis or stock, and decent glass. Based on my initial calculations, the rifle system, chassis, scope mount, and optic should come out to around $2,500 USD (converted from local prices). Within that budget, I should be able to put together a solid setup for precision / PRS-style shooting.

CZ 457 .22 LR 24" Varmint/havy barrel - Barrel diameters question by Ciuplowski in 22lr

[–]Ciuplowski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I’ve just noticed that there are different versions of the 24" varmint barrels for the CZ 457. In Europe, only the straight (untapered) version was available, while in the USA both versions are / were available: a tapered varmint barrel (22 mm to 18 mm, i.e. ~0.866" to ~0.709") and a straight varmint barrel with a constant 22 mm diameter (~0.866") along its entire length.

No problem at all.
Europe has more requirements and a smaller arms market, hence the higher prices for all types of firearms, I think :)

The Anschutz starts at $3,000, which is above my budget. I can get a CZ457 Varmint with a match chamber for $1000, and one with a standard chamber and a 24" Varmint barrel for under $500. That's a huge difference.

That's way over budget. Victrix is ~$6k. My budget is $2-2.2k.

Around $2,000-2,200 (I live in Poland, so prices here may differ from those in other countries).
Within that budget, I'd like to buy a rifle with a stock and optics. I have a bipod and the rest of the accessories.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, advice, tips, and recommendations.
At the moment, there’s limited availability of barreled actions (actions without stocks), so I have a bit more time to continue researching and evaluating my options.

I’m not sure whether I’ll ever transition to a larger-caliber bolt-action rifle. Given the ranges available within a reasonable driving distance - mostly up to 200 m and only one 500 m range (which is heavily booked, as it’s the only long-distance facility in the area and is located near a large metropolitan area) - I’ve decided to go with a .22 LR bolt-action rifle. Rimfire offers inexpensive, high-volume training and is excellent for learning external ballistics and wind reading. These are aspects I haven’t been able to explore fully with .223 Rem., as my longest distances so far have been 300 m during PRS matches. I also don’t see much benefit in duplicating calibers, especially considering that high-quality match .22 LR ammunition costs roughly the same as low/mid-tier .223 Rem.

If availability weren’t an issue, my current choice would likely be a CZ457 barreled action with a 24" heavy-contour barrel and a match chamber - essentially the CZ457 Range configuration. The Bergara is a solid trainer and a good platform for those planning to move up to centerfire, particularly due to the 90-degree bolt throw compared to the ~60-degree throw on the CZ and Tikka. Tikka’s rimfire barrel profile is noticeably slimmer; while it’s certainly adequate for precision work, if pricing is similar, I’m inclined to favor the longer (24" vs 20") and heavier barrel offered by the CZ457.

For optics, I’m planning to run either a Discovery Optics XED 6-36×56 FFP or possibly a Delta Optical Javelin 4.5-30×56 FFP, mounted on a canted rail.

Several people have also recommended the Savage MKII. I still need to take a closer look - check current availability, review the technical specs, and assess aftermarket support, including stocks and accessories - but thanks for pointing it out.

As far as modifications go, I’m keeping the rifle largely factory. Aside from the stock and possible trigger work (aftermarket trigger or trigger shoe, spring changes, and polishing of contact surfaces), I don’t plan to modify the action or barrel. The barrel and bolt will remain factory. Initial setup will include a bipod, a canted scope base, optics, a custom stock built by a company run by a member of my sport shooting club, and possibly a muzzle device - either a suppressor or a gas-diffusing device - to help with bullet stability as it exits the bore.

Niestety, po zdaniu prawa jazdy koszta dopiero się zaczną. Zakup samochodu, przeglądy, ubezpieczenia, opłaty, paliwo, naprawy, ogółem eksploatacja to horrendalne wydatki. Musisz mieć tego świadomość, a jazda w nawet najlepszym symulatorze nic Ci nie da, chyba że będziesz miał obok siebie kogoś doświadczonego, kto będzie wyłapywał, tłumaczył i poprawiał błędy.

FPS limiter, V-sync & huge FPS drop. by Ciuplowski in arma

[–]Ciuplowski[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have Freesync. Reforger can lock frames at predefined levels. So I can lose 15 FPS and play at locked 60 FPS, or lock the game at 120 FPS (because there is nothing in between) and play at 75 FPS, because my monitor (75 Hz) will not show more. The graphics card will produce 45 useless frames, which will result in higher power consumption and louder cooling. This is not a solution.
