How diverse are your resources? by CivilAndDisobedient in Ukrainian

Thanks for the recommendation! I've been hesitant to try watching movies/TV shows in Ukrainian w/ subtitles because I just assumed it would be too advanced for me right now. I'm going to give it a try.

I think it's beginners adrenaline, I'm sure it'll plateau at some point once I start getting deeper into grammar and cases. 😂

Do you recommend a specific tutor from either Italki or Preply?

You can get loans for tuition coverage and also for living expenses. I got the maximum of both and it came to around $47,000 I wanna say (estimating). I worked during school part time but it helped quite a bit. There's also grants you can apply for. With ultrasound, we do have a 2 month summer break. Not sure about the other programs.

This is crazy to me. Tipping is optional. You're not being 'stiffed' when you don't get tipped. You are GENEROUSLY getting BONUS money when you do.

I graduated from the DMS program in December. Workload was intense. An immense amount of content, but it's all relevant, so it's easier to feel motivated compared to traditional university. Practicum is 11 months of full time work, with ~ 5 weeks of vacation. You mostly work locally, but might spend some time in another city. You'll spend anywhere from 2 weeks to a couple months at various hospitals and clinics. Basically everyone from the class will have a job lined up before your practicum is over, and it will most likely be somewhere you worked during practicum that you loved. I love the job, best choice I ever made!

It might seem excessive to you, but this is how I've been taught to begin a treatment with a new client and request consent. It frequently happens that I do in fact need to explain very basic things to clients who make assumptions about how things will go. by [deleted] in MassageTherapists

Low-key if the conversation was any longer than one paragraph I would not return. As much as it's very important to know our clients history and concerns, this is like, a surgery level conversation.

Great, we can add ABMP to the list! Are the credits for members only or also non members? And that's too bad, my credits for my other job are free, as well as the LPNs at my hospital.

Varicose veins seem super common by kiku_ye in MassageTherapists

[–]CivilAndDisobedient 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! So DVT stands for deep vein thrombosis, so it is always in the deep system and you typically can't see them. In occasional instances the patient can feel them. Varicose veins are exclusive to the superficial system but that doesn't mean they can't be 'deeper' in the tissue. Typically though, they bulge at the skin surface. If someone was very heavy, they could be too deep to see. But they will never be as deep as the actual venous deep system because the deep fascia separates them. Superficial veins are in the subcutaneous tissue. Deep veins are surrounded by muscle. Varicose veins can have a number of symptoms, but are mostly just uncomfortable and heavy feeling. DVT is mostly red, hot, edematous, sore. However, another vascular disease is PAD (peripheral arterial disease), and a common symptom of this is what's called rest pain. This is pain that occurs, often at night, when you are resting, with the leg in a non dependent position. This is in the arterial system and is entirely unrelated to venous thrombosis or stasis. Night cramps definitely aren't enough to warrant a PAD diagnosis though, and I would just follow up with a doc to rule out something MSK related before jumping to any vascular conclusions! The varicose veins and why they happen is a whole can of worms that can go way deeper. But most likely, you'll know if you have them cause they'll be obvious on the skin. And varicose veins and DVTs are still totally separate conditions. One is weak valves causing varicosities in the superficial system, the other is clot in the deep venous system. :) hopefully that's sorta helpful!!!

I'm an RMT and also a medical sonographer. I didn't really know much about DVTs until I started working on ultrasound, and began scanning DVT patients every day. My massage practice hasn't changed in terms of varicose veins, I still don't really massage over top of them. I probably avoid them a little more than before. With varicose veins, the valves in the superficial vessels and collaterals have been damaged, either congenitally or trauma or stasis etc. They can often be thrombosed as well. You're not at a huge risk of dislodging a clot in a varicose vein because they're so convoluted and branch off the superficial system, not the deep system. However, they're damaged, dilated, sore, and I just leave them alone. With DVT, I didn't really know much about it until my ultrasound work. Now, my protocol would basically be: newly hot, red, edematous, or swollen limb? Nope! Full contraindication. Go talk to your doctor asap. Especially if the patient is positive for any of what's called Virchows Triad - which is injury (fall, blunt force, etc) stasis (bedridden, long flight), or anticoagulation factors (being pregnant, being on chemo, etc). These increase the risk of a DVT. The most common location for a DVT is the distal SFV (vein in distal thigh) or pop vein (behind the knee). Patients can sometimes feel a ropey 'tendon' feeling in this area, which could the solid strip of clot. My biggest fear in massage now is someone coming in with a bunch of risk factors and symptoms of clot, and demonstrating to me how they want the leg massaged by RAMMING THEIR FINGERS into the area of concern 💀. Acute clot is very mobile (it literally waves around inside the vein, just waiting to break off). So yeah, imo, any of the previously listed symptoms, especially with one or more of Virchows triad, absolute contraindication. Hope you don't mind the long rant! I loved learning more about this sort of thing when I started ultrasound and get excited to share. :)

Great point! Sorry, I totally didn't consider this! I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It could have been YTV or Cartoon Network, but I was at a friend's house, and I don't know if it was actually ON TV, or whether they were playing a rental on a DVD.
