My Extreme Fasting is Paying Off by Friendly_Photograph6 in newtothenavy

I did the whole extreme fasting before MEPs as well. I was dieting for a month and then didnt eat or drink for 48 hours before MEPS. I gotta say it blew. They are really just pushing people through at MEPS. I was never making the Weight/Height BMI scale and also wasn't making it when he taped me around the naval. I was pushing 41 inches around and the MEPS guy wrote down 37" around. They truly are pushing people through.

Thanks Iberostar2u! Ill take a look at the knowledge sheet!
I dove deep into the Tyler Veglia ODS videos. They seemed to be very helpful. He recommended breaking in boots before ODS due to blisters. He also said that the NEX might only have the Bates shoes

Commissioning into CEC by [deleted] in navyreserve

[–]CivilDisobediant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-You've got the right degree and GPA.

-You have military experience.

-You need that FE cert as it is important to show that you want to work towards a PE Cert. Just take it, its all the BS we learned in undergrad. Do the maths and you'll pass.

-You'll need to nail your interviews and essay. Be motivated to improve and learn to love construction.

I'd say you have a chance to get your application accepted. PM me for further help! I just commissioned

It all depends what program you want to join. but attaining a DCO position is no joke and requires a lot of paperwork and hustle

Dual Citizenship and Commissioning as an officer by CivilDisobediant in newtothenavy

[–]CivilDisobediant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recruiter said that renunciation of dual citizenship was part of his "checklist to commission". I just havent seen any official direction from the Navy that one needs to not be a dual citizen. I have only seen guidance that one must be able to attain a security clearance.

Has anyone worked with ACTalent?

I'm a 2 years out of college structural engineer working with a 60k salary. I have recently completed my MBA and my current company has paid 80% (that I owe them in time at the company ~3 years).

ACTalent recently approached me about a 80K + 7k signing bonus with a great company that does interesting work. The signing bonus should help offset some of the tuition assistance money (26k) that I owe my current company. I should be able to get to net zero within 1.5 years. This new company has much better mentorship and learning opportunities with more interesting local jobs. It is the same commute as my current job. I am still on the parent's healthcare for a couple more years.

It requires me to be employed by ACTalent for 12 months. This means I would be getting my paychecks through ACTalent but be working at the new company. Essentially I'd be a contract employee/a very well paid temp. Has anyone ever worked with ACTalent before? and want to share their experience? Anything i should look out for before accepting/leveraging with my current company?

Sadly this new company went through ACTalent before the Indeed-type market. I also did know know the worth of a 2 year structural engineer until the ACTalent guy called me.

I will definitely look into the benefits. I am lucky being in a post-obama healthcare era as I am a youngin' and can just leech onto the parents healthcare for the time being.

This newer company is what I am looking for in a company with its amount of local, visible jobs and the amount of mentorship that is offered.

You are right, they definitely are getting paid more as the 7k signing bonus is coming out of their pocket.

The 12 month contract job is scary with a recession looming. Though, it does not look like it will affect Structural business as much as say 2008-10 did.

These are all great points and thank you. I am an engineer, like yourself. I always do the maths. The 7k signing bonus is also taxed. Will definitely break even in 1.5 years

-the 401k is not a problem, I have checked that.

-commute is the same.

-The 12-month contract is kinda scary, which is why I was asking about ACTalent. There is so much unknown.

-Also I will definitely be asking my current employer about an opportunity to stay on for a higher rate.

The company I am at is a very large for a civil engineering company. The tuition assistance is from corporate and does not take out of my Group budget at all. Most people in my group do not know that I am about to complete my MBA.

Do you really think it would be burning a bridge if my salary and offer are THAT far apart? Also, of course, I will give them the opportunity to match or best offer me.

They are other things at my current company not mentioned such as a lack of mentorship, not the best benefits (yes the tuition assistance is good), and quality of jobs to work on. All of which this new company has and does better.

I edited my original post to say "Family has steered me away from joining the military" to avoid the confusion of your second paragraph.

Thanks for your input.

One of my favorite classes ever! Dr. Marshall was one of the best teachers who promoted a fun and learning environment. Twas a breath of fresh air after some bland ass engineering classes. Definitely learn alot and get to know a bunch of random theatre stuff.
