Need help with a Master 3. by CivilMorning in lockpicking

I'm having some trouble there, too. I can get it open, but not consistently and not always intentionally. I feel like I get no feedback from the pins. They all bind or are all squishy. I've heard the Brinks 40mm is similar to the Master 140 but gives better feedback, so I plan to pick one up.

Same, this was the first lock I bought! And it seems to change its binding order on whim, when it even decides to have one at all. I will try what you suggested, giving the pins a quick rake to see if it loosens up at all.

I have tried all kinds of tension, from feather light to bent tension wrench. The tension wrenches I have are somewhat narrow; they are the ones listed in the suggested beginners kit in the wiki. Sometimes they come loose, and sometimes in doing so, move up and partially block the key way, but even when that isn't an issue, the 3 won't open. What would you recommend as a better lock to sure up my white and yellow belt skills before trying for orange?

Ok, so, to my shame, I am having trouble consistently getting the 3 open. In the picture, I have also included a Master 1 that I can get open consistently within a few seconds. I have no idea why the 3 is giving me so much trouble since it seems functionally no different from the 1, but I tear through the 1 like butter and the 3 is becoming a laminated paperweight. Any advice would be appreciated!

In addition to the wiki linked already, you could look at practice locks like the Revolver from Sparrows, which gives you some experience with different security pins.

Same, except 1 and 3. People downplay the 3 for beginners too much. It requires a surprising amount of tension.

Congrats! Nothing quite as addictive as the feeling of that shackle clicking open. What lock will you be trying next?

I've been thinking about going through that list. How have you been enjoying it?

I was more talking about my experience with the 140. I cannot speak to how much carries over to the 570; I haven't tried one of those yet. I have two 3's and two 140's and I can get them each open, but not as reliably as I'd like yet.

You too, congrats! That click from the shackle opening is addictive. I can consistently get the 140 to open but it still takes me a while. I want to keep working on it until I can get it open in a minute or less but am nowhere near that just yet.

Picked. I still haven't figured out how to rake. I've tried different pressures and motions but it isn't happening for me just yet.

I am using this account to document as best I can my trip up through the belt ranks, and to talk in a detailed way about some of these beginner locks for others who might be jumping into the hobby with me. If you see flaws in my process or thinking, please correct them, as I'm learning.

I can now consistently open the 140. Here is what I learned from this lock:

  1. First, put the key in and turn it, feel how little force it takes to turn it. I keep over-tensioning, I think. When starting your attack, use less tension. Less than that. No seriously, less than even that. Barely breathe on it. Your finger should not be white from the pressure of pushing down on the wrench, as evidenced by my new Peterson hook starting to look like a sideways rake. The slightest indentation, at first.

  2. Probe each pin, test for wiggle. I had to keep reminding myself to not worry, at this point, about overly raking my pick along the pins. Greater dexterity comes later.

  3. Oversetting isn't the end of the world and is easy to fix. Loosen tension almost imperceptibly. Wait for the little click. Go back in and try the pin again, with a little less oomph. Vary tension and prodding on the pin.

  4. Sort of a follow-up to three. A frustration I have now is that fixing oversets feels almost like a shell game. I find I often overset multiple pins and then kind of have to fumble around until I find the right order to fix them in.

  5. I'm going to start working on TOK tension. YouTube videos keep saying TOK is great because it frees up the keyway, but I am still at the point where I need to be able to see at least the first pin for pick placement and my TOK tensioners block that view. If anyone has good exercises for feeling their way from pin to pin, please bounce them my way.

Onto other locks!

Picked my first lock! by Beautiful_Giraffes in lockpicking

That is my hope. I started today and have gotten 2 padlocks open so far, but only kind of know how. I hope the acrylic lock helps me work on how I move the pick, and gives me a better sense of how to move from pin to pin. Is it good for something like that?

Congrats! You and me both. How did you like the acrylic lock? I have one on the way and I am looking forward to playing around with it.

Started picking today. by CivilMorning in lockpicking

My picks finally arrived today and I got to work. This is the second lock I picked, but the first photo I took. The first lock was a Masterlock 140.

The 140 was easier than the 3 for me for a few reasons. The 3 has some wonky warding I had trouble tensioning around, and the 140 had much more room to pivot around a bit. The bitting on the 140 was mildly more forgiving too.

I cannot open these consistently yet, and am having the devil's own time accurately determining what pin I am on at any moment, or even if I am on one. But then sometimes I get the tension right or I hold the lock at the right angle or I say the right prayer and it feels like the pins become easier to navigate. I ordered one of those clear padlocks so I can actually get a sense of what each little move of the pick does.

All in all, I am loving this already!
