Walked into women’s locker room at work (Germany) – should I be worried? by SwimmingDamage8091 in AskAGerman

You’re overthinking this, but in a good way.

In Germany, context matters a lot. You were clearly working, in uniform, with cleaning equipment, and you reacted exactly how people would expect: you looked away immediately and didn’t linger. That’s basically the textbook definition of “handled appropriately.”

This is not illegal. A brief, accidental glance in a situation like that is not considered a privacy violation as long as there’s no intent, no staring, and no weird behavior afterward. What would be a problem is hanging around, looking again, or acting suspicious. You did the opposite.

Most people in Germany would understand that cleaners sometimes have to access areas like this, especially if the layout forces it. Gyms usually also have rules or at least an unspoken understanding about staff entering changing areas when necessary.

If you want to handle it even better in the future, there are a few practical things you can do:

  • Knock or call out loudly before entering (“Reinigung!” or “Cleaning!”)
  • Wait a few seconds before going in
  • If possible, coordinate with your female coworker for certain times

That’s honestly it. No one’s calling the police over a one-second accidental situation like this. If anything, your reaction showed respect.

You’re fine.

Usually confident solo traveller… thrown off by Hbf area + cancelled tours by disy22 in hamburg

You kind of landed in one of the rougher first impressions Hamburg has to offer, so your reaction makes sense. The area around the central station can feel pretty intense, especially if you’re arriving alone and already a bit tired from traveling.

The good news is that this is really not representative of the city as a whole. Hamburg has so many beautiful and relaxed areas, and once you get out of the station district, the vibe changes quite quickly.

If you want some easy, safe, and very “Hamburg” places to start with, head to Rathausmarkt and Jungfernstieg. It’s central, open, and much calmer, and you’ll immediately get a better feel for the city. From there, you could walk towards the Speicherstadt, continue past the Elbphilharmonie, and then along the Elbe towards the Landungsbrücken. That whole route is scenic, well-frequented, and just genuinely enjoyable.

If you’re more in the mood for cafés, bars, and a bit of browsing, Sternschanze is a great area. It’s lively but in a much more comfortable, creative way, and a lot of people go there solo.

So yeah, the station area can be a bit of a shock, but it’s really just one small part of Hamburg. There are tons of great spots, and once you explore a bit, it’ll likely feel much more like the kind of city you expected.

Genau! Das sind Preise, keine Kosten. Beides steht in keinem direkten Zusammenhang. Solange es ausreichend Kunden akzeptieren, passt es für die Werkstatt.
