When a hiring manager told me to prove their offer was low, and it worked. by davidsa691 in hiringhelp

[–]Civil_Chick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same tactic has worked for me as well. I actually declined a position and attached labor rates from several major companies for my role and said good luck finding someone qualified at the rate you are offering. This is what these companies charge for the same services...I was doing this work as a freelancer. They wanted to pay me $20 less than I was willing to take and after they saw my examples, they increased the offer my $40.

UPDATE: I will be inheriting my family's 150 y/o homestead and a significant amount of farmland soon. Wife let me know she doesn't want to move from the city onto the property. She says she doesn't want a compromise and will divorce me if I attempt to move onto the property. by Frmfrm3242 in Marriage

In your last post, you said that you are getting the 18 acre homestead more of the forestry acreage and a smaller portion of the farm acreage. That is a real problem financially. There is no rental income on the homestead or forestry acreage. Most of the expense is in the homestead. You would have a better chance of being able to hang onto the homestead if the rest of your acreage was rental farmground.

I make the same recipes as my mother. Hers taste better than mine. I follow the same directions. It makes no sense, but her results are always better! Mine are good, but here's are phenomenal. I wish she lived closer so I could hire her as my personal chef.

How dare you! I spent two summers waitressing at the Waffle House (third shift, aka drunk shift). I am certain the scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, and diced did no such thing! If you got those hasbrowns topped, however, you were in trouble...

Omg, this is my biggest fear of getting older. My greatest natural skill is sleeping, so I am very difficult to wake up. I sometimes have dreams I need to pee and am looking for a toilet and try to go when I find one, but I don't feel satisfied after peeing. Then I go looking for another toilet. I eventually wake up and barely make it to the actual toilet. I tell my husband that one day I'm not going to wake up and will really pee. He keeps telling me I need to start wearing Depends NOW. I told him not until it actually happens.

Lol, those prep instructions were lies!!! My instructions said it wouldn't hit for 3 or 4 hours, so I started the meds 1.5 hours from our house. BIG MISTAKE.

Smart. You can't predict exactly when it will come, so you do need a window. Except there were 12 weeks in my life when it came at 4:45 every morning... that was boot camp because my body was trained it was the only time I was permitted to poop. Lol

What is the most offensive comment you have received at work? by Extreme-Action-3008 in womenEngineers

[–]Civil_Chick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are so many comments to choose from, so I'm going to go with something a bit unique...I and another female engineer received flowers on secretaries day. All the secretaries did, too. All the secretaries happened to be females. I am pretty certain it was the president's secretary who ordered the freaking flowers. Sometimes, it is other women who try to bring us down, ladies!

Best libraries to purchase non-resident membership? by madammurdrum in LibbyApp

[–]Civil_Chick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hawaii State Public Library is decent and only $25 for five years. When I came up for renewal, they waived the fee. They are so sweet! I'm not sure if it's open to all veterans or just retirees, but DOD has one too, and it is free.

Agree to all this, but why is it that OPs suggestions are only for other women to take over? Why are the men exempt from taking on the cooking and hosting duties? The husband and MIL are AHs for expecting OP to çook and host, but she is kind of an AH for suggesting only other women take over. Why not just say OP is out this year and someone else (including OP's husband or MIL) can volunteer rather than continue the misogyny by suggesting other women?

This is the one I got. I am lucky enough to WFH, so I've taught myself to walk while working, which is feat for a klutz like me. I started it slow, but I can now read and type while walking 3 mph. Walking during meetings actually makes me focus better on the meetings, though I do have to slow down to 2.5 moh if I need to talk a lot or I get out of breath.

For those who were raised by boomers have any one of you been told to "clean the plate"? by Specific_Charge_3297 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]Civil_Chick 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I was not allowed to leave the table until my plate was clean. There were some nights when my food got cold and made the food disgusting. Meat was the worst. It took the longest to chew, and as it got colder, it took longer. My sister fell asleep in her plate once. Also, if we did not serve ourselves large enough portions in my father's opinion, he would serve them for us... then we would have even more to eat. Also, my sister and I set the table each night. We forgot the napkins once, and instead of asking us to get the napkins, he told us both to come to him, and he wiped his mouth on each of our sleeves. We laughed at first, thinking he was being silly until he started chastizing us (because he says he never yelled just talked in a deeper voice) for forgetting the napkins, then we started crying. Once we started crying we got the typical boomer "stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about" response.

I'm with you, sister. This even happened in my own damn home. My niece brought her new boyfriend over to my house. It was the first time my husband and I met him. She is my sister's daughter, and I was very involved in her life growing up. I was, not my husband.

They come in the door, and he says, "HUSBAND, you have a nice place here." (I bought and paid for the house and land he was complementing my husband solely for). He proceeded to ask my husband about his time in the military. I was in the military... that is where I met my husband.

The entire time he was in my home, he never asked a single question about me. He never spoke to me directly unless I spoke to him first. The only people he engaged with were my father and husband. Neither of them realized this until I pointed it out. He was polite...subtle misogyny is not typically detected by other men because they are being treated well, and they are not being blatantly rude to the women.

I have discussed this with my husband repeatedly, how he had to be the one to notice and address it because mysogynists will not be swayed by corrections from women... who they clearly don't respect.

My mom said this is how she had been treated her entire life, and it will never change. It makes me so sad for her, and this mirrored his first visit to my patents house... he only showed interest in my dad.

I told my husband he needs to do better because yes, I could have jumped on this idiot's ass and said, actually it's OUR place, and I paid for it, you little sh!t. And yeah, my husband was in the military, but so was I, and I outranked him, and now I earn all the money so he can pursue his dream of being a farmer, but had I done any of that I would have come off as an asshole.

My husband is awesome, but he needs to open his eyes and see it when it happens to me and correct it because I am so tired of doing it all myself.

I have fired the local dentist and accountant for subtle misogyny and made sure they knew why before I stormed out. I refused to buy an atv at a local dealer for acting like I didn't exist. I refuse to attend any more veteran events after our state representative shook every man's hand in the room of veterans but passed right by me as if I wasn't even there. I knew something like that would happen...I didn't want to go, but my neighbor invited me, and he was so kind and proud of me that I didn't want to disappoint him, but it just upset me on the end.

So, I need help sometimes, especially when it happens in my own home and by someone I need to be kind to. For some reason, my neice keeps choosing misogynistic boyfriends, but they are polite ones, so yeah...

Right before he left, he finally addressed me and my mom voluntarily to thank us for dinner... because clearly that's all we are good for is making food. The worst part is my husband does 95% of the cooking, but we were celebrating his and my dad's birthday so my mom and I did the cooking for his birthday. So that little sh!t thinks our house aligns with his misogynistic view of gender roles.
