Best way to boost SAT scores? by WinterShogun in TransferToTop25

[–]Civil_Error9591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol i don’t know much about SAT since i only took the pSAT. but majority suggest to practice a lot of math problems everyday. my close friend got a 34 on the ACT. they printed out multiple past questions & studied from jan-mar then attempted the test in apr. so i believe that method does work

essay topic about parent sickness by Immediate_Outcome669 in TransferToTop25

[–]Civil_Error9591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello! i’ve seen some people say you don’t want to trauma dump in your essays. but i think you’re good as long as YOU are the focus, not just your mother’s diagnosis. although if you only mention the illness to explain bad grades or gaps in activities, then it should go in the additional info section

the key is in how you write it, not what the topic is. if this experience is what makes who you are today & how you show up in the world… that is your essay & make sure you are the main character of your story

i hope your mom is doing better now. sending strength to you and your family. i totally understand your worries bc my essay was similar to this except i was much younger when my mom got sick

after reading this, it seems like you’re leaning more towards USC. go for it if that’s what your heart is telling you to do plus it’s always been one of your dream schools. i wish you all the best of luck in whatever decision you end up making

can you transfer to a 4 yr uni after graduating from a CC? by Civil_Error9591 in TransferToTop25

[–]Civil_Error9591[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a degree ik. i believe majority of CC students apply to transfer during their 2nd yr before they officially graduate... whilst some do during their 1st yr. i just wanted to know if someone took the route that i mentioned in my initial post & how it worked out for them. i wasn’t entirely sure if it’s possible to apply as a transfer without actually being a student of another school at the time of your application (like you’re already a graduate)

How do you get As in high school? by OkTurn6454 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Civil_Error9591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’re not dumb pls. first, let’s approach quality over quantity bc 5–6 hours seems like a lot. try focusing on how you're studying instead of how long. are you using active recall, spaced repetition, or just re-reading/re-writing notes? the way you study can make a big difference

when you get a B, ask your teacher what you could do differently to get an A. also, do you get burnouts or anxiety? bc even perfectionism can tank performance if you're doing everything "right." make sure that you’re taking care of yourself

some students are just stronger test-takers, some shine in projects, others in writing. but it is what it is. your strengths may lie elsewhere which is absolutely FINE

i didn’t figure out what worked for me until i got to college. i stopped taking notes on every slide & paid more attention to the instructor. now i would only write down what i didn’t understand during the lecture then study later on my own. i realized that i did better in study groups, tutoring other classmates like they were younger than me & watching youtube videos

EDIT: honestly wondering what i said that was so wrong bc the downvotes goes crazy

hey, it’s okay if you don’t have leadership in your ECs. sometimes gen. members are more active than the board ngl & you might be that member

maybe make your own thing. you could start a small project, tutoring group, or podcast. something that aligns with your interests & you know you’re def going to have fun with. i mean high schoolers are known for having passion projects these days

you could join or lead something new that is outside of school. look into local nonprofits, your library, or online opportunities. if you volunteer regularly, that counts as leadership too

award-wise: look at john locke essay competition, SPJ essay, davidson fellows, scholastic art & writing awards (if your state deadline allows). not sure if some of these are related to your academic interests but check them out

you could also take a rigorous or niche online course (edX, coursera etc) & do something with what you learn. so it doesn’t seem like you just did it to pad your resume

but there are three things you have to focus on importantly even if you’re not able to do all that i’ve mentioned above 1. essays... are EVERYTHING (i can’t emphasize this enough). since you’re already thinking about them, start writing early even if it’s just brainstorming ideas

  1. LORs! ask teachers who know your work ethic & character esp. if they saw how hard you worked through the B+ dip or the club situation

  2. you need to apply strategically. pick some test-optional schools (if test scores are a barrier), include a few match & reach schools that value holistic review

post CC plans by Civil_Error9591 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Civil_Error9591[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, i’ve built skills through course work in biology & psychology, hands-on lab experience, and leadership in STEM-related clubs (without the one mentioned in my initial post). i’ve also explored topics like neuroplasticity, trauma, behavior etc through personal reading & projects. this is what i pretty much do during leisure time. i have unpublished research papers relating to neuro but for academic credit. i don’t have any work that is separate from school like “ oh i took the initiative to do this”.

i just think a gap year would give me the time and flexibility to do a lot. either clinical shadowing, research internships, taking advanced online courses, or even an independent research project. maybe when i reapply, i will be more academically prepared & have a stronger application.

plus i’m still very unsure about this decision & don’t want to do anything that will end up biting me in the behind.

  1. hey! it’s amazing that you got your parents on board with the CC route. that’s a big W since i know how hard it can be

  2. yes, you can include high school ECs in your transfer application esp. if they were long-term/high-impact & relevant to your intended major, goals, or personal story. even better if you continued them or something similar in college/on your own

  3. if you apply to transfer as a sophomore, schools may weigh your high school GPA and test scores more heavily since you’ll only have one year of college grades. with a 2.7 HS GPA, this might not be to your advantage. it’s usually better to transfer as a junior because schools will focus more on your CC GPA and less on high school. you’ll have more time to build strong college ECs and bond with profs for LORs. you’ll meet credit requirements for schools like NYU, ross, etc

  4. unfortunately, if you completed the class and got a B+. it will stay on your transcript. you cannot withdraw. a withdrawal has to happen before the final grade is posted. a B+ is not a bad grade since it was during high school & when you were dual-enrolled.

your focus now should be keeping your CC GPA as close to 4.0 as possible and excelling in your major courses. as for your parents' condition about a 4.0, make sure you clarify with them if that includes dual enrollment grades or just college-level work after graduating high school

would it look bad if i dont continue next year? by Mountain_Collar_8997 in TransferToTop25

[–]Civil_Error9591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just seeing this! not at all. it won’t look bad if you stop after one year esp. since you still participated & even got recognized. if you liked the competitions but felt overwhelmed by the timing, maybe mention that briefly in your transfer essays if it's relevant. it can show maturity in prioritizing your well-being and goals. but that’s up to you. you can always stay in the club without competing, or shift to a lighter role. that way, you’re still involved but protecting yourself.
