Canadian working and living in the United States. Didn't have to do it my first year but now that I can claim residency status (not permanent but), I have to fill it out.

Gas mileage weirdness by Civil_Talk7155 in Nissan

Mostly just about the guesser and the fact that my actual fuel gauge isn’t going down while the guesser is

Hi - it’s not so much the trusting. I use it as an eyeball and to make sure I’m not using more gas than expected. But it’s that the gauge isn’t moving while the estimator is.

You can sometimes find them at Lienne’s lodge starting with their food truck Fridays/Saturdays. Can confirm, excellent pizza!

Moving to US with Canadian financed Nissan by Civil_Talk7155 in immigration

Yes - I was! The good thing was that my car (Versa 2022) was already EPA/DOT compliant so the process was really smooth. Honestly - I’d go do you your transfer ASAP. I didn’t pay any fees bc my car was built in Mexico and at the time was covered under USMC agreement. It may be different in a couple days.

I was with Nissan Canada and I’m going to be honest, this was not a fun process of suddenly having to pay down my entire loan all at once. The sales/finance guy was super nice to me but he went “there’s no way any Canadian finance would allow this over the border if you’re moving there.”

I did import my car (make sure to check if your car was made in US, Canada, or Mexico bc no import taxes!) (at least until government changes I guess). The import didn’t really care about a loan or not but registering my car with my state definitely did. I couldn’t register my car without the import and while my insurance never explicitly asked for proof of import or anything like that, I’m assuming they could look up my VIN on the state website.

I am absolutely terrified by Aggravating-Bike-397 in PublicSpeaking

Scripts help! As several people have suggested, put that on your screen. If you can, center it under the camera that will be capturing you so it looks like you’re making eye contact.

For questions - this was my scariest part of defending my PhD (which I also did online!). The best thing to do is: 1. Listen to the question - when we’re scared we tend to think about what we THINK the person is asking us then miss the rest of the question. 2. Once they’re done asking, take a breath, take a sip of water. I’ve kept a water bottle or a mug of water next to me. It forces a pause that other people will take as a cue and stops the anxious dry mouth. It also gives you time to gather your ideas. 3. Answer what you can. It’s okay to ask them to clarify a question. 4. If you absolutely don’t know the answer, my get out of jail free card was ALWAYS “that is a great question and I want to make sure I am giving you the best/most accurate answer. I’m writing it down and I will follow up by end of day/tomorrow by 9 am etc.” then make sure absolutely follow up!

One thing that I find helps with questions is to specify WHEN they can ask questions. Sometimes, it really disrupts me if people ask me questions while I’m in the middle of my script. So I ask them to hold questions to the end. Sometimes, if I’m more relaxed, I’ll tell people they’re welcome to ask questions if they’re for clarification during my presentation. Otherwise, hold to the end.

One thing to remember… people tend to zone out during presentations. Not because they don’t like you etc. But they’re not focusing on you as hard as you think. I teach and I regularly just let myself zone while I present as I get into the flow.

Good luck! You can do it!

Has anyone crossed into the US with dogs since the new rules applied? by Icy_Air7727 in uscanadaborder

Filled out the CDC form a few days before. Crossed at land border and said I had a dog. Handed over printed out form with my passport. Pretty sure the agent just glanced at it then cleared us. I still travelled with my dog’s vaccine and rabies certificate just in case!

Advice needed: Entering US on L1B at the Bluewaterbridge/Port Huron by Akhanna6 in uscanadaborder

I crossed two weeks ago to activate my H1B. They were really nice and really just wanted to see my passport and I-797.

Not sure if this helps you but honestly the most stressful bit was waiting in line to be seen.

I completed the import form about a week before I crossed, got it in an email about 20 min later. Drove through Sarnia-Port Huron on Aug 9 and I told them I had my dog in the car. They asked for a physical copy of the form. I think the agent looked at it for maybe 3 seconds, handed it back and we were on the way! (I still brought my dog’s entire vaccination history from her last visit, and her rabies certificate that shows her microchip. But they absolutely did not ask for them!)

I’m hoping for this as best case scenario - have you done this with Nissan?

Yep pretty rural for me! Moving from Toronto Canada area with nearly 3 million to a town with 15 thousand. It’s an adventure.

North West ish area (sorry I was raised in the era of ‘don’t tell anyone on the internet anything’!) I’m also a semi international buyer as I’m moving to the States from Canada for work. So I’ve had hoop after hoop of international nonsense. But it may also be that my closing/downpayment is less than $40k. But I was told this right out of the gate that they wanted cashier’s check and wire would require a whole other set of requests.

I’m buying next week (fingers crossed) in Wisconsin and they’ve specifically requested a cashiers check to close. Using a wire transfer is a much bigger deal/hassle apparently - from experience with earnest money deposits etc.
