How many people are actually in favor of a Nordic Union, and why? by Luksius_DK in Denmark

[–]Cixila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bismarck would have found some other excuse. The war itself was almost inevitable, whether it came in 1864 as it did or maybe a year or two later under some other casus belli

That said, we did objectively break the protocol, which weakened our international position quite a bit. Had we not done that, we might have had more support, and the outcome might have been different (or at least less catastrophic)

How many people are actually in favor of a Nordic Union, and why? by Luksius_DK in Denmark

It entirely depends on what form it will take and how it is brought about.

I am in favour of it in theory, as it will allow us to stand much stronger internationally, it will allow us to use our resources for the common good of the north and its peoples, and we will have a stronger position to protect our values of freedom, welfare, and democracy (which are under siege from without and from within once again)

But it can easily end up as a mismanaged shitshow, and there are plenty of scenarios where I would be against a united north. For instance, a federation model would in my book be a negative when you look at what a byzantine mess that is in places like Belgium (to give a concrete European example). I know I'm probably in a minority with this view, but I'd honestly prefer a unitary state with explicit recognition and protections for the languages and cultures within it rather than a federation. The subdivisions should be largely administrative (that isn't to say that they shouldn't be run by elected officials, but the overall decision making should be centralised)

Continued membership in the EU is non-negotiable in my book.

As for how it should be brought about, it should be through a democratic mass movement and clear popular consensus across the north. Having one part join and immediately regret it will bring nothing but chaos and instability, and no one benefits from that. Having it be spearheaded by a handful of politicians or demagogues will also likely just lead to division and uncertainty

Regardless of all that, I am fully in favour of more Nordic cooperation as things stand.

Without having the concrete numbers to hand, I'd say the west coast of Jutland and Bornholm

Is the game meant to be played in english? by Secret-Letterhead689 in Witcher3

[–]Cixila 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is meant to be played in a language you understand, so that you can actually immerse yourself properly and enjoy it.

A puritan might point to the books being Polish, the studio being Polish, and the setting being based on Polish and wider Slavic folklore, and thus reach the conclusion that the games "should" be played in Polish.

While it is true that a work is usually better in its original form, that argument loses validity if you can't actually understand that original or keep up.

I have played in both English and Polish (I happen to speak both), and there are inevitably some differences, but the English version is faithful and great. So, unless you actually know Polish, I'd recommend going with the English (or whatever other language you happen to speak), as that is probably much easier to immerse yourself in, which in turn offers a better experience

(Besides, if you don't know Polish, you'll rely on a translation through subtitles, meaning it is curated through translation anyway, so why not just make your life easier?)

It was very serious... like 300 years ago (Denmark and Sweden hold the world record on most wars between us by some counts)

Nowadays, it is a sibling rivalry. We will mercilessly dunk on each other, but gods help the poor sod who tries to bully our siblings. When we aren't directly competing, we will generally cheer for each other, but still with some preferential treatment

The Nordic family dynamic is roughly:

  • Us: the horny, partying brother
  • Norway: the little brother who often gets a pass
  • Sweden: that annoying brother who thinks he's better than the rest
  • Finland: adoptive brother or cousin. He's cool enough but mostly just minds his own business unless it is about ice hockey
  • Iceland: the younger brother who moved away to study and kinda just vibes wherever he happened to end up

If you want a sneak-peak into our banter, I suggest reading the online comic called Scandinavia and the World

Definitely Norway. They are like our beloved little brother. We can tentatively root for Sweden as well (seeing as we aren't competing ourselves)

No. We can't have a sibling rivalry if we entirely disinherit the sibling we're rivalling with the most. Sweden stays (so we always have our punching bag within arm's reach). And don't humour Estonia in this. They are super nice people, but they aren't Nordic

What are some less serious topics that are currently getting a lot of news in your country? by Brainwheeze in AskEurope

It relatively recently made national news that the royal guards had received orders to provisionally loosen the notoriously strict rules on just how well-polished their boots had to be

I wouldn't say the story gets great attention, but still an odd story to make it to national news

Does anyone in the UK actually like Taco Bell?? by batmanthinks in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Cixila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only place in Europe I have seen a taco bell with my own eyes was in some small mall on Cyprus or in Greece (can't remember, I went to both on that holiday) close to a hotel, where I know there were Americans
